Last Saturday in San Diego, a wonderful thing happened for local music. Three bands who have been around for quite some time got the chance to open up for Nada Surf.

The new concert series announces shows with Nada Surf and Mutemath // Follow Owl and Bear on Facebook and Twitter for contests, MP3s, and links that don't make it onto the blog.

As part of The Echo 's ten year anniversary month this December, The Soft Pack will headline their own show. This is fitting since I remember seeing The Soft Pack there about 3 years ago when they started off as The Muslims. Now they will take the stage on Friday, December 9th along with Abe Vigoda , Devon Williams and So Many Wizards . Pretty awesome line up if you ask me. Tickets for this show are [...]

A festival and other festivities: ► Hard to believe there's a better bargain than this year's FYF Fest (especially if you bought your tickets at the screamin'-cheap presale rate). If the involvement this year of über-promoter Goldenvoice eliminates or even alleviates the embarrassing logistical problems of the past two years, FYF 2011 could be a landmark day. It's highlighted by Guided by Voices , Explosions in the Sky , Descendents , Broken Social Scene , Death From Above 1979 and Cold War Kids , any one of [...]

These mixes were posted in January and February 2010, the winter of our discontent. Seriously, the blog was on life support during this time. We're through that storm now. 2010 was such a great year for music, and these early mixes show why. Many of the tracks were available in late 2009, but appeared on 2010 releases. Tracks are from late October through late November 2009 Gapless mix ripped at 256k VBR. Download all tracks in one zip file [...]

The Soft Pack and Hanni El Khatib accentuated the rock in the Also I Like to Rock series on Thursday night, delivering scorched-earth performances to a big crowd in the Hammer Museum courtyard. The Soft Pack previewed a handful of new songs the L.A. quartet has in the works for a new album, and Hanni El Khatib and drummer Nicky Fleming-Yaryan made as much as a two-piece possibly could, previewing material off his forthcoming album "Will the Guns Come Out." ||| Photo galleries by [...]

Three fantastic free shows, and other fabulous ones: ► The first week of this year's Also I Like to Rock at the Hammer Museum was a smash hit — and tonight's second installment of the four-week series promises to be every bit as rockin'. The Soft Pack (pictured), who are working on a follow-up to their 2010 Kemado Records debut, headline. Opening is Hanni El Khatib , who will be performing material off his forthcoming debut "Will the Guns Come Out." The free show in the museum's courtyard kicks [...]

Graffiti6 and Eastern Conference Champions kicked off the seventh annual Also I Like to Rock series at the Hammer Museum on Thursday night in raucous fashion. Playing to a capacity crowd in the museum's courtyard, ECC unleashed 45 minutes of melodic, fuzz-drenched indie rock to start the night before the U.K.'s Graffiti6, with singer Jamie Scott leading the way, delivered an hour of swoon-worthy folk rock. KCRW DJ Dan Wilcox kept the crowd hopping before and between sets. ||| Photo galleries by Laurie Scavo [...]
