More job horrors on the way in '09. I get the word yesterday that the Grim Reaper will be whetting his scythe the first week of the new year. And I will be wearing the robes and wielding the death staff to a friend of mine. As I am discussing this with one of my staff, the prez of our company comes by dressed as Santa with not a care in the fucking world. Rome burns. Nero fiddles. As an added bonus, the real Reaper will be paying a visit to the Nomad household soon enough [...]

X-mas is one week away. I guess that rules. Wal-Mart employees getting pancaked for some plasma TVs, the industrial-sized carbon footprint of the copious holiday-induced traffic, a general feeling of malaise, and not to mention the cliched but nonetheless important observations of the Santa Calus' pervasive creepiness. Christmas is weird, and I don't know if I like it. So instead, I celebrate DMX-mas, which adopts traditions such as enjoying "'X Gon' Give It to Ya," watching some of his excellent films, and drankin' malt liquor. But since most of you don't celebrate DMX-mas like Lana and [...]

It's hard to believe it's time for the forth annual Christmas mix. When I'd first started compiling them, I'd see the occasional holiday song collection here and there. Now, bloggers start posting seasonal tunes in late November right up to December 25th. I prefer to save it for one collection of the best I've come across over the last twelve months - once this is posted, work starts on next year's mix. A good compilation is evocative of the holiday, each song should resonate experiences of past seasons, I believe this one does just that - enjoy! [...]

I Love Techno, City Parade, Groovecity, Body to Body, 10 Days Off, Fuse, H20, Café D’Anvers, Culture Club, Petrol, Silo, ... Voor en na deze sympathieke heren speelt Sonic resident E-phonk de nodige beats naadloos aan elkaar. [...]

Way back in the 1960s, there was a growing music scene in the Pacific Northwest. They liked to call it "garage rock" and the bands played loud, hard and distorted way before the Ramones, the Sex Pistols or anybody else. So of course in 1966, three of the most influential bands, The Sonics, The Wailers (not Bob Marley's) and The Galaxies, decided to make a Christmas Album. While the album is a somewhat toned down version of their usual fare, it still stands as an incredibly unique and awesome Christmas collaboration (it's actually one of my favorite albums in general). [...]

Okay, I know I wasn't exactly a model guest at your holiday party last year . I'm sorry about drinking up all your egg-nog, making borderline inappropriate comments about your teenage daughter, taking over your stereo, and throwing up on your sectional. If you invite me back this year, I promise not to do any of those things again. Except the taking over the stereo part. I'm definitely going to do that again. As a peace offering I've made a few of the tracks I might play at your party available for download in advance. [...]

The Sonics ( myspace wiki fanpage AMG ) were a garage band from Tacoma, WA, active during the 1960's and recently reunited for a few live shows. Here's one of their four contributions to Etiquette Records' 1965 compilation Merry Christmas (the album also featured labelmates The Galaxies and The Wailers -- whose song "Christmas Spirit" appeared on last year's Country Christmas mix, which will appear in roughly this space on Sunday). The Sonics are so punk it's hard to believe this is from 1965. [...]

you can't take soulja down. he rocks. "at the end of the day, you might wanna go f*** with mario." got'em.

Until now I have been able to avoid it. I looked the other way when Dearest Tart started in on it obscenely early . And I plugged my ears when Dearest Ed started spinning his seasonal discs back at the arse-end of November. But December has ushered in the relentless tyranny of green and red and bells and fa-la-la-la-fucking-la. I cannot escape it and so I grudgingly accept an egg nog latte made with two parts schmaltz, two parts tension, and a diluted shot of cheer. Christmas is coming. [...]
I’m back from turkey over-indulgence and some holiday shopping. I’ll carry on PC’s post of sad songs with… more sad songs. For many of us, this is the best time of the year, but there are quite a few who struggle through this next month. Whether it’s financial or emotional, some don’t find much to cheer, and rightfully so. If you know someone like this, try to do something, no matter how

I haven't seen Guy Ritchie's new movie RocknRolla yet. The film received mixed reviews and then the A-Rod divorce scandal hit. However, the soundtrack is phenomenal. The Clash, The Subways, The Beat, The Hives, The Sonics, 20-20's, War and Lou Reed are some of the artists that contribute tracks. It's by far his heaviest soundtrack to date. This month in the vinyl bin I came across an old song, by Tacoma, Washington garage rock legends The Sonics, called "Have Love Will Travel" which is originally by Richard Berry. This song is easily one of the most influential of the 1950's and 60's. Since it was written it has been covered by artists like Raul Revere and the Raiders, Stiv Bators of The Dead Boys, The Black Keys, and Jim Belushi.
On Halloween, instead of catching Glassy Candy or some of my favourite bands doing their best Sabbath impressions, I drove down to Seattle to catch the Sonics, who were playing their first "hometown" (they're from Tacoma - close enough) show in 35 years. More than any other act that I can think of, the Sonics succeeded in capturing an insane amount of energy on their studio recordings: they were raw, raunchy, and brimming with life. And, while they've understandably lost a bit of that as the last three or four decades have past, the guys can still [...]

The Sonics at the Paramount Theatre, Seattle | 31 October 2008 Halloween night is always a surreal experience, but add to it the fact that the Sonics are playing their first show in Seattle in more than 35 years and it gets a even a tad more surreal. The Paramount Theatre in downtown Seattle was packed with zombies (not the Zombies), devils, Egyptian queens, rock stars, aging punks and a whole lotta Sonics fans. Half of the people to whom [...]

One Step Beyond Intro Boo! Scared you, didn’t I? But not nearly as scared as you’re gonna be after you listen to these terrifying tunes about werewolves, devils, witches, monsters and zombies; seriously scary stuff, kids - real spooky! Now, it might be too scary to listen in the dark, so you might want to be sure to turn on a light or three. In fact, I’m getting chills just thinking of it - chills, I tell you! Isn't that scary, boys and girls? Kids... whatsamatter? You don’t like being scared? Kids... kids... where did [...]

photo from the New Yorker Since yesterday's post was all about the new, the rest of this week will be devoted to vintage stuff that I've been into lately for one reason or another. First up is the punk band that was a punk band before there was punk rock. They are one of thee legendary bands of the pacific northwest and are often overlooked when you think of seminal bands from around here. I'm talking about Tacoma, Washington's the Sonics of course. Back in the [...]
