Everybody knows that Ringo Starr left Rory Storm and The Hurricanes to replace Pete Best in The Beatles. This month, Ringo's replacement in the Hurricanes passed on at the age of 67. As a bandleader, Keef Hartley later played at Woodstock. He died on November 27. It is not very well known that boxing legend Joe Frazier , my favourite fighter of all time, was also a bit of a soul singer. Some of his stuff cashed in on his boxing background; the song featured here is a straight soul number, and it's pretty good. [...]

The second SAVED! compilation gets righteous on your asses with a churchful of glorious '70s soul – and it does so without going for the easy option of all those Stevie Wonder songs about God being a zillion lightyears away with whom you should have a talk (and did George Michael realise that he was singing a song of praise to God when he had a hit with Mary J Blige?). While neither Stevie, Aretha nor Marvin feature here, Al Green does, though with a song that precedes his lesser Reverend Green phase. And, of course, Curtis Mayfield [...]
the mistress "After four movies, three concerts, and two-and-a-half museums, you sleep with him. It seems the right number of cultural events." -from How to Be an Other Woman in the collection of short stories Self-Help , by Lorrie Moore The Soul Children - I'll Be the Other Woman : [...]

The fifth instalment in the Covered With Soul series departs from the custom of the previous four which featured mostly covers of non-soul originals. This mix consists of soul covers of soul songs. One would imagine that soul covers of soul songs would be more frequent than those of non-soul tracks in the genre's repertoire of the late 1960s and '70s, but I've found that this is not necessarily so, at least not as far as reasonably well-known tracks are concerned, and if one ignores the Motown custom of its roster all recording the same songs. [...]

Isaac Lee Hayes, Jr. passed away yesterday after being found unconscious near a treadmill in his home in Memphis. He was 65. It would be difficult to overstate Hayes' importance to '60s and '70s music. Hayes' work with Stax/Volt Records in the mid-'60s layed the foundation for the Memphis soul sound. His hugely important solo career furthered the range of soul and R&B, and also contributed to both disco and rap. Hayes joined Stax Records in 1964, and his first gig was as a pianist for Otis Redding. As a [...]
