In the wake of Broadcast singer Trish Keenan's untimely death, it's reassuring to realize how influential the group was in the time they had. On sophomore album Celeste , U.K. act The Soundcarriers draw from the band's space-age retro-future amalgam, pairing dispassionate psych harmonies with Krautrock grooves and coy pop hooks. "Last Broadcast" opens with a lockstep mission statement; elsewhere, "Step Outside" leans deeper into "Age of Aquarius"-era pop and the twinkling "Out of Place" offers an atmospheric ballad tied to Earth by resolutely busy percussion. It's crisp, well-executed stuff - and, though unintended, a worthy tribute to a [...]
So that's it, the year's over. I heard a lot of great music this year, some stuff from the past and a lot of new stuff. This mixtape is about the new songs I've heard that captured my ear and didn't let go. Of course there are many many others, but to get them all in one [...]
It was another great year in music. Again, like last year, I can't understand those who insists that 'nothing good happened in 20102, annoying hipsters. It was such a diverse year, full of brilliant gems. I won't go into charts and numbering, but here's a rough overview of the stuff I liked this year. Some of the [...]

I came across the British group The Soundcarriers when I was checking in on another act, but I've since found that the latter can't hold a candle to my new favorite UK import. The Soundcarriers use a combination of warm male and female vocals to push their songs forward, using a quiet hush over each song to allow room for small specks of melodic beauty to work through. The band just released their newest LP, Celeste , and it's been keeping me nice and cozy ever since I got [...]

The Alps new record 'Le Voyage' has been out for a wee while now, it's delicate beauty is a perfect match for the current autumnal bliss we are experiencing in the UK. Get the LP for a very reasonable price over at Boomkat . The Alps- Black Mountain (Download) The Soundcarriers also have a recent album on the record store shelves, 'Celeste' is out via Melodic records . You will immediately draw reference to other psych minded artists such as Stereolab and [...]

From London, Manchester and Nottingham, in the UK, Last Broadcast is from their second album Celeste Here we have another blast of summer flecked sound. Last year's album Harmonium found a lush and spiked musical template. In Celeste we find a tighter, more focused group. The same authentic analog warmth pervades, but with the addition of new sounds, playful blips and bleeps suggesting an extended musical canvas. The influence of jazz and 'Kosmiche' music becomes apparent as the muscular Last Broadcast floats from the turntable. What a groove! The bass work of Can's [...]
Working For A Nuclear Free City have always been one of those bands that is either absolutely brilliant or absolutely forgettable. That said, I will gladly give them credit for the gems they have created and they are mostly beard and mustache free... so that already puts them in the 80th percentile globally. Being from Manchester & label mates of The Soundcarriers and Standard Fare doesn't hurt either. WFANFC are releasing a new album on Oct. 12 called Jojo Burger Tempest on Melodic . You can download the first Single, Silent Times, right here... right now! [...]

I imagine most people's first reaction to Nottingham, UK's The Soundcarriers is the same as mine. "Is this Stereolab? Oh wait, it's Broadcast. It's not?" The band, who's second album, Celeste, is due out on Melodic on August 2 , don't deny their influences. In an essay by BBC 6 Music presenter Justin Spear on Celeste' s inner gatefold (very 1960s Columbia Records), he writes : Here we have another blast of summer flecked sound. Last year's Harmonium found a lush and spiked musical [...]

" The Soundcarriers debut album 'Harmonium' was a favourite of ours. The follow up 'Celeste' sees them move into a more Kraut-y / experimental direction (even better by us!) whilst still threading through Axelrod, Pentangle, perfect vocal harmonies, 60s psych pop and jazz tinges. That's out 9th August on Melodic. Here's a track to wet the appetite" [ The Soundcarriers - Last Broadcast ]->Bad Fotography Recommends! Celeste is out on Melodic come 9th August 2010. [...]

The Soundcarriers is a band from the UK who released one of my favourite albums last year, their beautiful debut album 'Harmonium' . Now they're ready with a follow up, 'Celeste' , due for release on August 9 on the Melodic label. Their music sound like a mix between kraut, psychedelia, the harmonic vocal pop of 60s/70s bands like The Free Design and modern bands like Stereolab or Broadcast (who probably have the same musical inspirations as The Soundcarriers have...) The album is full of wonderful vocal harmonies [...]

Whoo it's hot, huh? And barely June. Despite my hopes at not having to make any of this year's covers myself, here we are with a patented B.Pearis Type-Over-Photo school of design. (The font, if you're curious is a Peter Saville original, created for the 1981 – Factus 8 – 1982 compilation EP.) I actually kind of like this one, though. The photo is from the Library of Congress' Flickr. It was taken at a square dance in Oklahoma around 1939. No one in this photograph was dancing to The Drums, The B-52's or Air Miami, but [...]
