Bonkers over Conkers Sorry not to have posted for a couple of days. Oh, you didn't notice? Phweww.`````` (simulated flicked sweatdrops) Today, a novel approach: I'm going to post some mp3s I've recently found and like. Maybe you will, too. (Post some mp3s, I mean. If so, please let me know.) Now. . . The Beep Seals – Stars mp3 – Delighted I was to hear from Jack Beep Seal (aka, "Cooper"), who

( Dawn by Alphonse Mucha ) I added some new links to our blogroll recently. I welcome the following blogs to our frequently visited list! Cerulean's Love of Music features their weekly podcast and some songs that might pass you by if this blog weren't here to highlight them for you. Local Vertical highlights Far-Less , Mister Vague , and some inbox highlights from the week. Powerpopulist has a selection of very nice [...]

I had so much fun compiling my Surf's Up: 2007 Summer Mix , that I have decided to drop a few more songs with summer in the title. Arranged in no particular order. Lucky Soul ~ One Kiss Don't Make A Summer Gillian Welch ~ Summer Evening (Greg Brown cover) Morcheeba + Hubert Lewis ~ Summertime Polaris ~ Summerbaby (yep, that "I was around" song from Pete & Pete) Kathleen Edwards ~ Summerlong [...]

I love to get the word out about great musicians. And when those musicians are passionate about their craft and really want to get their tunes in front of people, I also love to help out in whatever way I can. Mike Detmer is one of the good guys. He is a Cincinnati based musician that we have talked about here in the past . Mike's band, The Spectacular Fantastic , are really just that. Not only do they make excellent folky, pop music, but Mike is a really great [...]
Song: Summer Toes Artist: The Spectacular Fantastic Album: Hypem .com Comments: About a year ago I did the 2:22 play list . It was a precursor to Slave to Shuffle. My high school girlfriend lived in a building that was numbered 222, and since then I tend to see similar patterns in numbers, 222, 3:33 pm, 4;44 mn half miles, etc. on a consistent basis. I attribute this to those formative years hanging out in Tarrytown . This song is dreamy pop that would [...]

I love getting tiny little musical love bombs dropped in my inbox , but unfortunately sometimes they just sit there until I can get time to appropriately discover that they are there. Such was the case with Cincinnati's The Spectacular Fantastic , who dropped me a little bomb last week about their newest release, Outer Space Is Nothing But A Lie . They so inspired me that for this post I've opted to pay tribute in the form of what I call "emerging poetry" (you know, the kind you write when you're 10): [...]

So, the title of Dan Deacon's new album obviously got me thinking. Tomorrow marks the official U.S. release of Spiderman 3 . I'm excited to see it. I loved the first two. This one has received great reviews from some enthusiasts I know that have had a peak and mediocre ones from some standard movie critics. Some have said it's bloated with just too much going on. Anyone want to weigh-in with their opinion on it or the franchise in general? Marvel also recently announced a forthcoming [...]

Three from some of my earliest playlists of this year. I love these Cincinnatians' unstudied insouciance and the way their understated name so lowers expectations. They cite as influences "the five food groups." More free and legals are available at their band and MySpace sites. The Spectacular Fantastic You mp3 Winter Song mp3 Darkest Hour mp3
The Spectacular Fantastic are a four-piece from my hometown who are becoming one of my favorite local bands. They have a list of influences as long as my arm that includes The Beatles , Beck , Yo La Tengo , Buddy Holly and Neutral Milk Hotel . I'm so bad at this whole describing-what-they-sound-lik e game that all the cool kids have perfected, so I'll just tell you what they say about themselves: " Melodic Retro Pop? With a [...]
Recently, I was turned on to The Spectacular Fantastic with their 2006 Free EP. They're an indie pop and rock band out of the Cincinnati scene who have just the right amount of what I like to call "That twang thang." Their mission statement (if such things exist outside of corporate America) is that "Not every new record that comes out has to be a challenge to listen to, " and that "Sometimes we need something familiar to help us get through the day." Coincidently, I share a similar sentiment when it comes to music. Not everything I listen to [...]

In House #1668 : The Long Winters' Putting the Days to Bed ; New Sleepy Jackson, Yo La Tengo J ohn Roderick 's Long Winters return tomorrow with their third full-length release, entitled Putting the Days to Bed . The album is another batch of soaring, spell-binding indie-pop from Roderick, who you might say has a way with a pop hook and is quickly becoming the West Coast's Joe Pernice . The new effort is the [...]

Mike Detmer and the Spectacular Fantastic played a great set last month at Desdemona. And now, just like last year, they are giving us a nice treat with a free downloadable EP. Here is what Mike has to say about the new EP..... We sincerely enjoy playing and recording music for you to listen to. While we do have many other albums that you can purchase from us and our label, we'd love to share some of these nifty tracks that we have been collecting since our last [...]

The Spectacular Fantastic are a really great, not-too-well-known band from the midwest (Louisville? Indianapolis?) that I discovered through WOXY.com a year or so. The band released the excellent I Love You free EP last summer, and have just released another free EP entitled, I think, Free EP 2006. If you're a fan of great, catchy songs with a California-country/Gram Parsons type of feel, be sure
