The Spinto Band are one of those bands who I really, really try to like. Alas, I always end up feeling a bit underwhelmed by their releases. They seem like they are always on the verge of creating something truly great, but fail to deliver on that promise. It doesn't help that my first exposure to them was through the wonderful "Oh Mandy", which is one of my absolute favorite songs of this decade. Maybe that was a bad thing, as I've judged everything else they've done by the one moment that can easily be [...]

The Spinto Band have a self-recorded long-player coming in 2010, but to tide us over, they are releasing a new EP called Slim & Slender , on 10" vinyl and digital download, this October 6th. MP3 : The Spinto Band - Jackhammer The band will soon also embark on the Park The Van Tour with label-mates Pepi Ginsberg, who also has new material out very soon, and Generationals. [...]

The Rakes Get a Fresh Start.
Though our friends at PopMatters had the exclusive on the premiere for the vide o, "Domino", but we had to spread the word about the Spiral Beach crew as we are quickly becoming fans ourselves. Their new album, The Only Really Thing , drops September 22 on Sparks Music/Tommy Boy and this young Canadian band is really hitting the road incredibly hard, having already toured with Spinto Band, Sloan, The Hidden Cameras & Tokyo Police Club . Video and mp3 "after the [...]

Thursday, August 20, 2009 Today's Quick Mention: After an initial phase of anger towards their list-making laziness, I decided to return to Pitchfork to see how their "Top 500 Songs Of The Decade" were playing out. Fortunately, there was actual commentary this time, but I'm not sure how I feel about many of their selections. Your thoughts? As you may have noticed, this week has just been flooded with new stuff from a slew of great pop bands Today, hopefully to your [...]
[ download ] Delaware isn't exactly a bastion for indie rock heroes, which makes The Spinto Band 's success over the past few years all the sweeter. Their two LPs, Nice and Nicely Done (2005) and Moonwink (2008), were warmly received by critics and the blogosphere alike because of the band's inventive songwriting and propulsive rhythms. The Spinto Band recently wrapped up work on their next self-recorded full-length, to be released in 2010 on Park the Van Records , but on October 6th they will release a teaser [...]

Ah, summer. With all your sun and your heat and your humidity and your sweat. How I missed you so. I just ran 2.5 miles, the furthest I've been able to go since my knee surgery, and you know what, it hurt like hell, but out under the summer sky on a beautiful day, all is right with the world. Barbecues and blooming trees, sandy beaches and broken dreams. Summer comes only once a year. Let's enjoy it this time. Download Camera Obscura - "Honey in the Sun".mp3 [...]

"Trying to find the perfect match between pretentious and pop" goes the lyric from the Los Campesinos! song " It Started with a Mixx " - clearly a sentiment understandable to those of you who have ever taken to the task of creating a mix tape, CD (or flash drive?) or a friend, loved one or potential boot-knockin' buddy. But is it really worth all the fuss? Does a carefully, artfully and intuitively compiled mix truly create something larger than the sum of its parts? After a recent glut of mix CD creations, with many more on the way, [...]

Looks like a preview of summer is heading our way, with highs getting close to 90 in some places. The unexpected heat is not going to keep the weekend show line-up from happening. It's another full weekend, so I'm going to have to split it up into two posts. This one will cover Friday and those that also hit other places after Friday. Kings of Leon from band's myspace Quite a few big name acts start things Friday and [...]

The third time is the charm for The Spinto Band , who return to the Lounge after far too long. While finishing up the promotion for their Moonwink album, the guys said that they "saved the best for last" when popping back in to play a set of tunes for us on an early Friday morning. Fresh off a local stop at the Southgate House with The Rural Alberta Advantage, they played an irresistible set of tracks from their latest album. On their way back towards Pennsylvania after almost 6 months of solid [...]

That is a good way to express how my spring break has been so far....If I were a bro! No but really, I don't even know if I could handle a spring break that looked like a episode of TRL. A beach does sound fucking excellent right now though! Here I am sitting in my room with The Knife's masterful 2006 album "Silent Shout" blasting. I am nearing the end of my spring break and I am not too pleased about that. Don't get me wrong, I am enjoying my 2nd semester of college. However, I do miss [...]

Although I love the concept that the Amie Street music website throws down, I must admit I use it far too little. It's a brilliant idea: pay for music what it's worth. Bedroom dj's can create a free account and upload their tunes and they will cost anywhere from a few cents to free. The more popular they get and the more people that download their tunes, the more expensive they get. Don't get me wrong, the site is not just for no-names, all the big indierock albums can be found their as well [...]

This morning's visit featured: Needlepoint Later On They All Laughed Brazil Summer Grof Visit The Spinto Band at their official site. Listen to WOXY here. MP3: The Spinto Band - Live On WOXY

...we just found out that The Spinto Band will be in the WOXY studios this morning to throw down a Lounge Acts set. If, like us, you missed them at the Southgate House last night, you should tune in this morning at 11 to catch them live (or grab the session online at some point). Also, later this afternoon, a band we told you about recently , The Royal Alberta Advantge , will be stopping in to do a Lounge Acts session as well at 1:30 this afternoon. Be sure to tune in to [...]

"I think we're alone now, there doesn't seem to be anyone around / I think we're alone now, the beating of our hearts is the only sound." Recognize that chorus? It's very rare that a song can capture the youth of parents (the original version: Tommy James & The Shondells , 1967) as well as remind their children of theirs (the most popular cover version: Tiffany , 1987). "I Think We're Alone Now" is one of my favorite 80s tracks and one of the best songs to cover, in my humble [...]
by neil roberts [Editor's note: After some consistent feedback we've decided to preview the shows of the week for your reading pleasure. No longer can you say "I wish I would've known about that!" because we've got our QC show recommendations lined up like fourth graders at a water fountain.] Live Guide with Neil (week of April 1-7) is brought to you by Dan Deacon's Bromst, so you'll have to excuse my spokesmanship. It's an album that awakened [...]
