I've been on a bit of a neo-garage kick recently (possibly due to Rob's influence), so it was a treat to find the lead single from Oakland proto-punk revivalists The Splinters in my electronic mail yesterday. (The rule these days seems to be if there's a band whose name is composed of a definite article and a plural noun, its probably going to make me happy. See: The Warlocks, The Ettes, The Barettas and so on.) "Splintered Bridges" clocks in at less than two minutes, each second of which is packed with a hooky, aggressive sneer. We'll be on the [...]
The Splinters debut their catchy, garage-pop single on Double Negative. "Splintered Bridges" was released last week via 7inch and it is backed with "Sorry." Download: The Splinters - Splintered Bridges
Oakland-based quartet The Splinters have just released their debut single. "Splintered Bridges" is a lo-fi power pop nugget that reminds me a lot of late Bratmobile.Check out the track for yourself:"Splintered Bridges"- MP3The Splinters' Myspace

After a hell of a run, The Dirty Water Club (based at The Boston Arms in London) is winding itself up. There's one last night, this Friday, which will feature The Priscillas, Lost Souls, Splinters and The November Fire. The record label will continue; and there are plans for vague, ad hoc nights under the Dirty Water banner in the future. But the regular night? Catch it before it becomes history.

In every town live few riot grrrls, and in Oakland reside The Splinters - peppery and adorable, which has probably been said more than enough. I've had encountered a few of the girls, as friends of a friend at a party, of course - and I can say just after a brief encounter that I'd want to hear/see their band. What's the difference but a change in environment and a couple instruments in their hands? These girls definitely have figured out how to have fun, independent the setting. The Splinters - "Splintered Bridges" [...]

They list as their influences bands from an amalgam of genres and musical spectrums, but when you hear The Splinters play, it all makes sense. They are Sonic Youth meets The Shangri-Las , The Breeders meet The Evens . They are Ashley, Caroline, Lauren and Courtney. They are from Berkeley. And they'd like to rock for you. They caught our attention at SxSW with their mix of garage rock, girl-band, riot grrrl, folk and alternative. Plus, their debut EP [...]
(photo by Jonathan Hung) Please please please stop sleeping on this band y'all. The Splinters , a Berkeley-based all-girl group whose tunes we called "decidedly lo-fi near-two minute rollicks" are finally back with great news both about new tracks (9!) to come and dates with destiny next week. We spent a day locked in the recording space, the outcome of which was 9 new recordings we are super excited about. Here's one of them we're most excited about called "Cool." It's a brand new song too. [...]

It's time once again for a Monthly Mix episode of our weekly podcast. These eight songs are all from new or recently released albums by some great Bay Area bands. About all of the bands: San Francisco indie-pop band Photons ("Animals") recently released an excellent self-titled debut album. They will be at the Retox Lounge on October 23rd and the Make-Out Room on November 16th. Singer-songwriter Goh Nakamura ("Hangman") latest winning [...]

Here are a couple of songs that have nothing to do with each other, aside from the fact that they're both catchy, decidedly lo-fi garage-punk ditties that would've made good jams for skating around in your backyard in like '91, on a homemade ramp of questionable structural integrity, just like that kid up there (photo also happens to be Wavves ' album cover). That, and they've both been alternately bouncing around in my head for the last few days. Is it too early to predict that both of these guys will be big in 09? [...]
Matt Skatterbrain is one of the few bloggers who always has my ear. He's like if you sliced out the pop-loving side of my brain and gave it free reign over my entire skull. And you know what? I almost enjoy it when that happens. MP3: The Splinters - Splintered Bridges Those of you who are [...]

The Splinters! The Splinters are four girls – Ashley, Caroline, Lauren, and Courtney – from Berkeley/Sacramento, CA. I don't know too much about them as of right now, but I'm pretty enamored with ever song of theirs I've heard so far. They wear their influences on their sleeves, sounding somewhere between The Shangri-Las and early 90s K grrrl punk. "Splintered Bridges" comes from their debut self-released, self-decorated EP, which as far as I know, you can only get from them in person... but maybe you could send them a sweet email if [...]

(photo by Jon Hung) In June, we professed our love for the gals in The Splinters , a foursome of Berkeley kids who we gushed all over because they sounded fresh and folky and all-girl campfire-y (is that a word?). Well, we just got an email from Caroline from the band about some new tracks they just finished for a CD-R-based EP they're going to put out themselves. Hand-decorated, no less. Check out the infectiously building "ChChChCha" and the almost too-bluesy, stomp-your-feet "Sea Salt Skin" now. (mp3) [...]

No bullshit. The Splinters have only been around for the last six months or so and are pretty much ready to take over your iPods. The Berkeley-based four-piece combine the idiosyncratic tendencies of folk rock (a la their homebase's history, duh), the full-tilt power of riot grrrl style progressions, peppering in all-girl campfire sing-along style and refreshing amounts of tambourine, instantly making us realize why they'd list The Shangri-La's and Sonic Youth as influences. The songs are decidedly lo-fi near-two minute rollicks and we have no qualms about them. The girls are [...]
