James Cleare, Heather Robb and James Smith -- The Spring Standards -- have been bringing their own boisterous brand of three part harmony, multi-instrumental chops and impressive folk/rock songcraft to some freewheeling, wild and wooly Lower East Side live shows for a few years now. New May 1 yellow // gold , the third album from the genre-hopping Brooklyn trio, is actually a 12-song double EP reflecting their special stylistic dichotomy: the more acoustic folk/pop side, mined from their beginnings on the local music club circuit (represented by the Laurel [...]

Puppets playing and jamming to The Spring Standards, what else could be better?

The Spring Standards The Spring Standards released a new video for "Queen of the Lot" from their album, Would Things Be Different . You can watch the video in this post. My comment? Puppets!!! The band will be will be releasing a new EP, Gold , in Spring 2012.

Between today's videos and yesterdays UMO video, it almost feels like the video art form is not a forgotten one and definitely showing flashes of brilliance. Both videos are teasers of what's to come from Santigold and the Spring Standards. Santi will be "Master of My Make Believe" this year via Downtown Records and you can download the track, "Big Mouth," over at her website . The Spring Standards are a little vague with their album info, but promise a new one this year. Until then, we have their "Avenue Q" inspired video for [...]

We broke the seal on posting songs from the American acts playing HPX '11 yesterday with a new one from the Juan Maclean, so why not keep the ball rolling with The Spring Standards ? This NY-based trio has a very melodic, and musical sound, with each member being a multi-instrumentalist and trading vocal duties along the way. They should be fun to see live, and you'll get two chances during the festival: Friday, Oct. 21st at CKDU and Saturday, Oct. 22nd at The Company House. MP3:: The Spring [...]

This past Wednesday night, Ha Ha Tonka played a sold out show with the Spring Standards and our friends of the band Lucius (not Lücius!). It's been a few months since last seeing Lucius , and even in that short time, they've matured immensely. Jess Wolfe and Holly Laessig took the lead as usual, but were joined on stage by an incredible ensemble that included Dan Molad on drums and Pete Lalish on guitar. Their songs were clean and spot [...]

So around 7ish tonight, this Blackberry commercial came on during the football game. I noticed it featured The Living Room in NYC, a place near and dear to me ...as well as an amazing venue. Didn't know the band so I looked it up. Found out it was the Spring Standards and when I looked on their site, noticed they were playing a show in a hour near my house. One cab fare and a ticket and voila, i'm seeing the band live...because of a commercial. The place was [...]

Cotton Jones , Pepper Rabbit , and The Spring Standards Thursday, October 7 at TT The Bear's (Add to your Google Calendar) On their new album, Would Things Be Different, many of The Spring Standards ' songs have that comforting familiarity of a story retold many times. But then the band will throw in an unexpected chord that adds dark clouds to an otherwise sunny moment, or pause just long enough [...]

So often talented musicians are let down by substandard material, but not here. All songs are by "The Spring Standards" (no individual songwriting credits), and they show exceptional talent and effort. Beautiful melodies and lyrics coupled with exceptionally arranged and executed harmonies combine to make this CD draw you in upon first listening and just improve over repeated plays. They brought
I bought the 1% for the Planet on iTunes and just threw them all on my little iPod to shuffle. Whenever this song comes on, I'm usually cooking for whatever reason, and I find myself bopping (not really dancing) around the kitchen. I finally looked into them a little more and really like their sound. A fun little spring band!
Former Philly/Delaware area high school friends who reconnected in New York, James Cleare, Heather Robb and James Smith as The Spring Standards have become a Lower East Side staple over the past few years bringing their own unique brand of three part harmony, multi-instrumental chops and impressive folk/rock songcraft to their often wild and wooly live shows. It's always a challenge to tell who's having more fun -- the audience or the wise-cracking, foot stomping and hootenanny-harmonizing trio on stage. Their music draws mightily from the classic acoustic pop music of the 60's and 70's, with elements of [...]

Filed under: Concerts and Tours , Exclusive Hailing from New York City, James Cleare, Heather Robb and James Smith, each heavily influenced by 20th century songcraft, create music under the evocative name the Spring Standards. The three met while in high school and initially formed their band, formerly called Old Springs Pike, along with John Gallagher Jr. The band later became a three-piece and began their current musical journey. Spinner caught up with James Smith before he headed to SXSW to discuss how the Spring Standards formed, their [...]
