Vancouver noisemakers the SSRIs have a new album due out June 18, the awesomely-titled Effeminate Godzilla-Sized Wind Chimes . Lead track "A Certain Set Configuration" is more restrained and melodic than the band's usual circus prog madness. Sure, there's a brief, atonal outro, not to mention some disorienting structural shifts, but nothing here is too hard to swallow—Joseph Hirabayashi's half-rapped refrains are downright infectious. Vancouver has this insider reputation as being this "no fun" place, which I do not buy into. I'm of the view, if you're bored than you're boring. I know first hand there are amazing things going on in this city. If there's any problem, i think people need to be better informed and the scene needs to be supported. Vancouver's newest festival is joining in to help fight the cause. Olio (pron: Oh-Lee-Oh) is scheduled August 13-16th.
