STANCE: Socks socks socks Shopping for socks that look as good as they feel? We don't usually do product endorsements here on IM (I can hardly sell paper even if I tried) but California brand STANCE had us at their awfully cool 'socks with an artistic spin'. Boys and girls if you're looking raise eyebrows then don't underestimate this new kid on the block (I do not lie - check out their Art Collection especially). While STANCE may still be unheard of here in Asia, they'll [...]

In this day and age, six degrees of separation has become "one click" and the world is as accessible as the speed of a wireless connection. With this in mind, Skullcandy unveils the Virtual Dressing Room - something brand new in the headphone space. This 3-D plugin allows consumers to virtually try on headphones with a click of a button and view themselves in the product at any angle. See the attached press release for details. Est. in 2003, Skullcandy makes the SICKEST headphones on the Planet for Snow, Ski, Skate, Surf, Wake, Moto, [...]

Throwing our Don King like hair and gold chains into the ring, the hill is giving this tour promotion idea a run. In theory, it's a great way to get our name attached to some shows and get the crowds to turn up, but in reality, this is simply a way to get two great bands to play a bit bigger venue and on the same lineup here in Halifax. Bottom line: The Schomberg Fair & The Speaking Tongues are both bad ass, mixing gospel, punk, swamp, garage rock, and [...]

Man, I don't want to alarm you, but there is a lot of music available on the Internet right now. Now I don't want to be one of those crotchety dudes that harps on about things being better back in the day (well, I actually am one of those dudes, I just don't want to make it obvious), but with how relatively easy its become to make and distribute music in this day and age, one has to wonder if some of the emphasis on the actual playing of that music has been lost. [...]

There's no doubt the Stance is from Halifax. What is in the water in the East Coast that churns out so much h ook heavy rock and roll. This is a cl assic example of garage mixed with equal parts power pop. Their new album, I Left Love Behind a Long Time Ago is out Feb 23, 2010. The story behind this collection of songs is that they hid for months from their label (Just Friends) while working on the record. The label [...]
(photo: myspace.com) There's an immedicacy to "Jenny Jitters" from Halifax's The Stance that can warm the cockles on a cold winter's day. It's got a boozy, bluesy swagger too it that can melt permafrost thanks to a near-explosive performance by this tight-sounding quartet. If it's any indication of what The Stance sound like live, then you can be sure that any gig they play will get you jumping and jiving and begging for more. The band's debut LP (following an EP released back in 2005) is called [...]

I know we've talked about this year's Sappyfest a few times here on the hill, but I don't think we've posted our official preview post. So, uh, consider this that post. The fest takes place August 1-3 in Sackville, New Brunswick, and looking at the lineup , I have to think it's going to be quite the event. After all, the Ack and I are thinking about making the trip from Halifax to check it out, so that should be all the endorsement you need. No quite enough to convince you? [...]

I was scrolling through the lineup for this year's Sappy Fest - which we will talk about in great detail tomorrow as I take a trip through Sackville - and seeing The Stand listed triggered my memory. Their 2006 EP - The Stances Shall Inherit the Earth! - is a nice slice of crunch that is heavily influenced by the garage rock revival when North American acts out their spin on the 60's British Invasion sounds. One listen to Somebody Call the Law and you can't help but think about bands like [...]
