The SteelDrivers are a band created by Nashville session veterans, including Richard Bailey (banjo), Mike Fleming (upright bass), Mike Henderson (mandolin), Tammy Rogers (fiddle), and Chris Stapleton (guitar, lead vox). Although labeled as Bluegrass, Chris Stapleton's voice is full of back woods soul, crossing their sound into Blues and Outlaw Country territory. This is something I've known for a while now, but I've been waiting for the band to make an official announcement. Chris Stapleton (middle above) is leaving The Steeldrivers to focus on his songwriting and his family. The official announcement was made last week ( I just saw it today ). The good news is that The Steeldrivers have already recorded their follow up to 2008's Grammy nominated self titled debut album , and Chris does provide vocals for that album. [...]
I do like a little bit of bluegrass in the mix and one of my favourite albums in the genre is the self titled release from The Steeldrivers - so it was with a tinge of disappointment that I read recently that Chris Stapleton has decided to leave the band and concentrate on his song-writing, loved his singing on that record, a replacement has already been found and announced it will certainly be a difficult pair of boots to fill as Stapleton was a distinct talent.
