We first got an email regarding The Steelwells back in early December, one I clearly slept on. Luckily I was paying a bit more attention the second go round when I got a reminder last week. When I first read the track's title within the electronic piece of mail, I thought I was getting a...

For all my formal learnin', I'm a pretty simple-minded fella. Put a guy in a rabbit suit and a guy in a chicken suit, and I'm guaranteed glued to the screen for four minutes. With that in mind, it shouldn't come as any great surprise that I'm digging Fullerton, CA's The Steelwells . Of course, clever videos are fine, but they don't mean squat if the tune sucks. Fortunately, these lad have songwriting chops in spades. Exhibit A: Our Fabled Little Rabbits . If you agree (or if you too are an aficionado of [...]

Loving "El Capitan", a catchy pop rocker from the Fullerton, California band, The Steelwells . It came out on their last EP Shallow On The Draft way back in 2009, but the band has only come across my radar now. Damn, sorry guys. This is pretty much as close as one can come to pop perfection. From start to finish this song is glistening with a big sunny sound that is utterly infectious. It makes sense that they're from California. Their sound is one big sunny delight. Everything about "El Capitan" adds up to a [...]

Meet The Steelwells , an indie-rock outfit hailing from Fullerton, California. With a sound not dissimilar from fellow indie-rockers The Shins, The Steelwells' almost sound like a more dreamy and relaxed Quiet Company. Very few songs I have heard in the past weeks have taken me on a musical journey, and El Capitan ranks right up there with the best of them. It's hard not to bask in the glory of El Capitan's sunny chords and vocals. The song may only weigh in at four and a half minutes, but there is something inherently epic about El [...]

I LOVE THIS BAND! I actually can't find the words to describe them as a whole! From the great instrumental orchestration, to the captivating vocals, the band from Fullerton, California, kills every note and every second of their music. With great songs like El Capitan and Boxes, their music is matched with equally as great videos, which is KEY for a band like this who thrives on the indie market and on the artistic viewers. I really think they're worth more that one listen, they're worth a bagillion. And thanks to Meagan and band [...]

Dig this: New York City four-piece the Dig — not to be confused with old '90s faves Dig — named their band in honor of the movie "Dig," the Brian Jonestown Massacre/Dandy Warhols documentary. (I know, that's a lot of Digs in one sentence.) The Dig's sometimes-atmospheric, always-hooky indie-rock only has a little bit in common with the movie's purveyors of psychedelia, though. "Electric Toys," the debut album from singer David Baldwin, singer-bassist Emile Mosseri, keyboardist Erick Eiser and drummer Jamie Alegreir, has the radio-friendly pop-step of bands like the Strokes and Editors (with whom they've [...]
The big, chiming folk rock of Fullerton quintet the Steelwells went over big at this year's Orange County Music Awards — the band scored two victories, including best song for "El Capitan." And there was a nice bonus: Akorn Entertainment got behind the song and produced a very topical video starring some very cardboard characters. Ali Akbarzadeh directed the piece, and Joshua Lang helmed the photography, showcasing the work of art director Diana Markessinis and lead artist Natalia Wong. The song comes from the fivesome's "Shallow on the Draft" EP, released late last year. [...]

Wake Up Lucid's no-frills blues feels like a breath of fresh air amid all today's tricked-out psychedelia and hybridized noise. The project of cousins Ryan, Ian and Jamie Baca, the trio's debut EP "Look Alive People," recorded to 2-inch tape at the Village in West L.A. a year ago, crackles with bite-sized riffs and taut rhythms. Occasionally you'll get a whiff of the Dead Weather or Wolfmother, and darned if singer-guitarist Ryan Baca's wail doesn't sound like "Been Caught Stealing"-era Perry Farrell on "Two Cents," but mostly "Look Alive" affirms the muscle of a good old-fashioned power trio. And [...]

Fullerton, California's the Steelwells sure captured my attention with their indie/dance/rock/pop hybrid. And that's kinda hard to do nowadays. With the proliferation of music on the internet, there's just too much to get through and my attention span has seriously disingrated into what's probably normal for a fifth grader. Once you hear the Steelwells, you can tell it's indie rock of the late 2000's. It's quintessentially indie and they do it SO well! Steelwells - Boxes (mp3) (buy)

The Steelwells have had a steady rise in the California music scene, gathering a ever growing army of loyal and dedicated fans. Comparisons in the music press to the Beach boys and Wilco sit comfortably with the band, who in such a short space of time seem to have carved out their own niche in an otherwise fickle - and at times elitist - California music scene. After securing a residency at the Silverlake Lounge in L.A at the begining of the year, the band have also received nominations for three awards ( Best Song [...]

[It ain't Radiohead — which raised over half a million dollars at its Haiti relief benefit on Sunday night at the Fonda — but here's tonight abbreviated show menu:] It'll be their last SoCal appearance before Coachella — San Francisco quartet Girls [pictured in August at the El Rey Theatre], still getting all kinds of love for their creatively titled debut "Album," play the Detroit Bar in Costa Mesa. ... Meanwhile, the January resident bands bid farewell in raucous fashion: Year Long Disaster's stint at Spaceland [...]

Fullerton-based quintet the Steelwells make big, open-hearted music that'll put a smile on your suburban angst quicker than an afternoon latté or four open lanes at the Orange Crush. The band — singer-guitarist Joey Winter and mates Andrew Eapen, Robbie Gullage, Brian Manchester and Billy Kim — last year released its "Shallow on the Draft" EP that's heavy on pristine melodies, chugging rhythms and "whoa-whoa-whoas." It's the kind of formula that should at least prick some music supervisors' ears if not win some fans' hearts. ||| Download: "Boxes" [...]
How does a band from Yorba Linda, where Richard Nixon was born and nightlife peaks with bowling alley karaoke nights, wind up with a residency at one of the most esteemed hubs of L.A. independent music? We caught up with the Steelwells at their Anaheim rehearsal space, preparing for their January Silverlake Lounge gigs. This interview by Albert Ching.

Who : The Steelwells from Orange County, CA. What : Here's another post that almost got away. Drawing their sound from various interests in pop, folk, alternative country, The Steelwells are singer Joseph Winter, guitarist Andrew Eapen, bassist Robert Gullage, drummer Brian Manchester, and multi-instrumentalist Billy Kim. Having shared the stages for the likes of Dengue Fever and Dawes, the band is currently supporting their independently released album "Shallow on the Draft." The song below arrives at track 6 and is perfect for you if you're a fan of Sea Wolf [...]
Los Angeles is a permutation of New York with a mildly less bad attitude. Part of that charm is that on Monday nights some of the venues out in Silverlake host bands for month long residencies. The shows are free and the bills are packed front-to-back with bands looking to break. New York has Piano's four-week residencies but this makes that looks positively fascist. Out here the people know each

Time for another mix, friends. I was aiming for a spring mix, and I think this accomplishes it, but it's not all flowery and laid back, but has a good amount of energy to it that I'm hoping will shape my spring. Strangelight Glow is what I call this mix, and here is the tracklist: 01. Death Cab For Cutie - My Mirror Speaks 02. Arcade Fire - Lenin 03. The Steelwells - Boxes [...]
