Dear Producers, Before you even try to dig in to this new Daft Punk album, which I am sure you already have, take a step back and listen to this Stepkids cover of "Get Lucky". You see, what we have here is a fantastic reinterpretation of what is already being deemed the single of the year. Without stripping it of all its soul, somehow, the Stepkids were able to transform the lovable Pharrell-featured song into an equally stunning jazz trio rendition. Now, I am not discouraging your attempt to take on any of Daft [...]

Yesterday was Daft Punk Day on the internet as Random Access Memories finally hit the world wide web. It seemed as if everyone needed to make sure to get their two cents in whether they liked the album or just wanted to get it out there that they felt the album was all hype and no substance. Connecticut's the Stepkids got in on Daft Punk Day by releasing a jazzy cover of Random Access Memories' first single - Get Lucky. The trio's interpretation is incredibly smooth, but not [...]

THE STEPKIDS will release the anticipated follow up to their self-titled 2011 breakout debut album this fall. Troubadour is set for release this fall on Stones Throw Records. Look for additional album details to be released in the coming weeks. They will also bring their highly praised live show to the Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival, a headline show at NYC’s Brooklyn Bowl and more. See full tour routing below. The Connecticut trio is also set to perform tonight on NBC’s Last Call With Carson Daly. Shot at Los Angeles’ Fonda Theater while on tour with Kimbra last [...]

Since their killer debut back in 2011, we have been dying for more from the Stones Throw indie band the Stepkids . The Connecticut trio is finally ready to make their next move, though, as they announce the upcoming release of their sophomore full-length, Troubadour. To get us excited for the record, the band has performed the first cut called "The Art of Forgetting" as part of the In The Red Bull Studio series. This summer is going to be pretty busy for the Stepkids, as they plan on performing at Bonnaroo, Brooklyn [...]

Connecticut psychedelic soul trio The Stepkids are gearing up for the release of their second album, Troubador , due out later this year on Stones Throw. The first single, "Sweet Salvation," appeared late last year on an EP of the same name, and the band more recently made a sci-fi-themed video for that track which you can watch below. The band will be hitting the festival circuit this summer -- like Bonnaroo in June -- but have club dates too, such as one here in NYC at Brooklyn Bowl on May [...]
Bonnaroo Artist | The Stepkids Bonnaroo History | Newbie Stage & Time: | TBD Hailing from Connecticut, if you haven't yet heard of psychedelic soul trio The Stepkids , there's a pretty good chance you've at least heard of some of their former employers: Alicia Keys, 50 Cent, and Lauryn Hill among them. The trio, Tim Walsh, Jeff Gitelman, and Dan Edinberg, all came from jazz beginnings (and have known one another for years), then transitioned into backing some of the biggest pop and r&b stars around. This r&b skill [...]

The Stepkids team up with Krondon & Percee P on a remix of "Legend In My Own Mind." Download: The Stepkids - Legend Remix ft. Krondon & Percee P via Stones Throw
Psych-rock outfit the Stepkids previously collaborated with MCs by way of the Pharoahe Monch and Homeboy Sandman-assisted remix of " Suburban Dream ". This time, the band is joined by Krondon and Percee P for a raw, albeit still trippy, version of " Legend in My Own Mind ". They spit their trademark gruff rhymes while Dave the Producer does his thing manipulating the woozy Stepkids cut. You can stream the track below and download it at Stones Throw .

After a brief siesta the weekly roundup returns with a dozen or so musical diamonds, albeit not particularly brand spanking new. I'm not sure if long posts like this are the best way to highlight acts or if those lower down the post miss out on listens and loves? As ever check Spotify for an ever-growing playlist (of tracks available through Spotify) or Why'd.com for the full-fat playlist of all the tunes. You can also listen to all the selections with Whyd's fancy new widget below. JUNIOR KIMBROUGH (DAFT [...]
Hal Williams and Matt Martians, who together form the Jet Age of Tomorrow , have been keeping busy with their respective side projects this past year or so. Martians and his Odd Future cohort, Syd the Kyd , have been touring and recording as the Internet while Williams has given his Pyramid Vritra output a good solid push. But (sometime soon, I hope) they are gearing up to release their new album as the Jet Age of Tomorrow. It's called Jellyfish Mentality —awesome title—and it's got a crazy cast of features. Seriously, [...]

For those seeking some warm vibes as we march on towards winter, the guys over at Heard have put together another one of their fun events: Brooklyn's first Funk Fest, for which have been lined up an exciting cast of -mostly local- funk/afrobeat-based acts spread over four days. Where? At Paper Box, Meadow Street. Yup, the one with the hole-in-the-wall taco guy. Headlining this series of shows - which will kick off on November 28th, ending on December 1st - are The Stepkids , featured on the cover of The Deli's 2011 CMJ issue, [...]

SHOWN ABOVE: Alabama Shakes Hey y’all (I swear, I’m a city girl)! It’s that time again when I blow your minds with oodles of goodies from the music realm. I guess I’m feeling a bit nostalgic this week and have managed to find ten artists who take me back to the good times and great sounds of every era. Some shock, some simply please, but in the end, you’ll be glad to have met them. So if this doesn't make your weekend awesome, you have no soul. [...]

Photos by G. Kimbra 2012 is officially the year of Kimbra ! In addition to singing on one of the biggest songs of the year (Gotye's "Somebody That I Used To Know"), the New Zealand born singer sold out two nights at New York's Webster Hall. I attended the second night on October 20, 2012. The show began with a great opening set by Connecticut's psychedelic pop/rock band The Stepkids . I've seen The Stepkids several times before and they get better and better [...]

First single off The Stepkids forthcoming album Troubadour (coming 2013 on Stones Throw), and the title of their new 4-track 12-inch EP. Written & directed by: Jesse Mann iTunes: Sweet Salvation - EP - The Stepkids via Stones Throw

When I first bought my turntable and began collecting records last year, The Stepkids debut, self-titled album was the first new release I picked up on vinyl. When I heard their songs, Shadows On Behalf and Legend in My Own Mind, I knew that The Stepkids was a piece of work that would only sound appropriate played on a turntable. I fell in love with their unique blend of '60s/'70s style music that had somewhat of a exploitation, b-movie feel to it. It's heavily psychedelic, but at its core their sound is really just classic soul matched with [...]
