Stonesthrow's The Stepkids are getting a lot of strong buzz for their vintage/retro sound and groundbreaking live performances. The video for "Legend In My Own Mind" has bloggers alike clamoring for YouTube's coveted 'as seen on' hyperlink, with cameos from Juggalos and KFC bucket-heads. BONUS: check out this cool live performance they recently did at my friend Menaka's crib for Wilcox Sessions : drink the kool aid:

The Stepkids' self-titled debut LP dropped earlier this week, and as those of you who checked the first two singles, 'Shadows On Behalf' and 'Legend In My Own Mind' will most probably attest, it's been worth the wait. Now, in order to help propel The 'Kids into top album lists for the big 1-1 (scary to think that we're getting to that stage of the year already, isn't it), the trio have put together a rather good video for 'Legend'. Anyone who has had the pleasure of being accosted by [...]
I'm going to say (write?) it right here, right now: The Stepkids are fucking great. Their ability to mix and match styles from the past few decades is unparalleled and just a whole hell of a lot of fun. If you need more proof, check out these hilarious visuals for "Legend In My Own Mind". The track itself is reason enough to watch the video, but the direction here makes for what is one of the year's best goofball music videos. Hit the skip for the video.
"Do you like hip-hop?" It's a question plenty of heads have been asked either on the streets, in a record store, or during a concert. And it's also the query that serves as the basis for the Stepkids' video for "Legend in My Own Mind." With the catchy '70s-referencing track playing in the background, you watch as the video's protagonist morphs into a modern day b-boy with loads of swag. He then heads to a party, hangs out with a Juggalo, and gets nice and wasted. It's pretty much the equivalent of a Judd Apatow film crammed into a neat [...]
Among other oddities, the new Stepkids video for "Legend In My Own Mind" features Buckethead and Lemmy impersonators bonding at a backyard barbecue with a juggalo and several other costumed characters I couldn't identify off-hand. Directed by Best Show host Tom Scharpling, the video replicates the feel of the song perfectly, transforming a button-down office worker in to a genuine hip-hop fanatic for an unforgettable day of handshakes and high fives on New York City streets, before he attends the aforementioned barbecue featuring a wide-ranging cast of colorful impersonators. The Stepkids' debut LP is out now on Stones Throw.

The Step Kids LP is finally available where good music is sold. Below is their new video for the song title " A legend in his own mind" Great video. WHO ARE THE STEP KIDS???? The Stepkids are three singer/songwriters. “A lot of what excites us about this band is this band itself,” says bassist and keyboardist Dan Edinberg. “It’s not either of us; it’s about creating an entity where the entity itself is what’s important.” As a result, every song on the Stepkids [...]
![FANG ISLAND, JAMES BLAKE, TWIN SHADOW [SUGGESTED NYC CONCERTS]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/3766281_lg.jpg)
Another week here in New York City means another week of live music that will blow your mind. Though James Blake , Yacht ,and Twin Shadow are in town, it's Brooklyn-by-way-of Rhode Island band Fang Island that snagged our #1 concert of the week spot. Why you ask? These dudes are outrageous performers who know how to have a good time. They're also playing one of my favorite venues, Glasslands Gallery . It's a small place filled with strange taxidermy, mythological creatures and a backdrop of puffy clouds. Do yourself a [...]

It’s always quite scary when you see a lengthy list of styles listed under one band, and American trio The Stepkids boast to have just that. That which is a brawny brew of psychedelic, soul, jazz, electronic, funk and West African beats. Their self-titled debut album has been released under the independent hip-hop label, Stones Throw Records, who house such experimental acts such as Madlib and the brilliantly named James Pants, and is headed by the equally superbly named Peanut Butter Wolf (aka Chris Manak). Despite the label’s sway towards the hip-hop genre, The Stepkids have thrown a spanner in [...]
The Stepkids are not what you would call a conventional band/group; instead they are the culmination of many styles, genres and three individuals, all of which are pulling in the same direction. No deadwood here. The collective is made up of three singer/songwriters including guitarist Jeff Gitelman, who up to recently was the touring guitarist for Alicia Keys. He is joined by bassist/keyboard player Dan Edinberg and finalised by drummer Tim Walsh whose East Coast jazz and strong R&B chops give the music a strong foundation for the more psychedelic ideas layered on top. In interviews [...]
THESE NIGGAS GO HARD AS FUCK! drink the kool aid:

Frank Yang The narrative around The Horrors' second album Primary Colours was a simple one - the band who made Strange House , with the outlandish costumes and stage names, were no more and in their place was a lean, fearsome combo who weren't part of a shoegaze revival but a shoegaze revitalization. Primary Colours learned from the sound-sculpting lessons of the past and applied them towards creating something familiar yet undeniably fresh. It was a remarkable thing. Their visit in October 2009 [...]

The long hours and more rigorous aspects of recording can easily strip away the experimentation and purity behind the ostensibly enjoyable process. Drummer Tim Walsh realized this early on in his post-collegiate career, opting to build his own studio in his hometown of Bridgeport, Connecticut in 2009, where he later invited bassist Dan Edinberg and guitarist Jeff Gitelman to help work on solo material and music for a married couple they were all touring with at the time. After getting along so well during their sessions and having already spent hours in a van together sharing each other’s [...]
We've been tipping you off on the Stepkids for a while now and the upstate trio have released their self titled debut effort and you can listen to the album (thanks to kcrw) in full above. Full of funk, soul, and psychedelia for the 21st century. An album that will certainly go down as one of thee best of 2011.

Photo of The Stepkids by by Jesse Mann and Matthew Bologna Twice this weekend I was reminded why it's important to get to shows early; it's one of the best ways to discover new music! On Friday I discovered I really liked this group call The Noise FM (think DFA1979 but catchier) and immediately bought both their CDs. They're local so I'll write about them further at a later point. Last night I went to Lincoln Hall to catch The Horrors (who ended up being kind [...]

Web orders of The Stepkids album on CD or LP - available today , a week ahead of the release date - will ship with this Postcard 45 of the new track "Bitter Bug". Note: This record is not a flexi-disc, not vinyl. The grooves are etched directly into the card. As a result, sound quality may very greatly from one postcard to the next and may not be up to "rock the house party" or "one to impress my discerning audiophile buddy" standards. Still pretty damn cool! MP3: Legend In [...]
