Having long been established as an elder statesman of punk, post-punk and alternative rock starting with the seminal Minutemen and the inspired fIREHOSE , his versatility has allowed him to play with many musicians of different stripes and genres. He's a bass player's bass player; the go-to guy who you know will [...]

Roger Daltrey of The Who Our greatest rockers are people who apparently never used their "indoor voice." Why should they? They were future rockers! Anyhow, the other day I was thinking that the one ingredient basic to any good rock and roll song - besides a guitar solo, of course - is a blood-curdling scream. It could be an expression of rage and defiance, like Roger Daltrey's classic scream at the end of "Won't Get Fooled Again," or it can be a cathartic release of pain and frustration, like John Lennon in "Well Well [...]
It's graduation week, and we guess that means at least some of you are preparing to leave college behind for good. If you'll allow us to get a little misty-eyed for a minute, we remember when we were in the same position, and it's both exhilarating and frightening — suddenly the future is a big empty space, just waiting to be filled in. Happily, as ever, there's at least some solace to be found in music, and there've been plenty of great songs written over the years about life and how to live it. So here's a playlist of some [...]

As seems to be the case with most things this week, I am running a little behind with my blog posts, but trust me this weeks cover version post is worth the wait. To celebrate the fact that this is my 100th 'We've Got It Covered' post, I thought it might be fun to ask one of my favourite artists to record something to mark this milestone. Last years, 'Songs To Swim To' album from Monoganon was undoubtedly once of the finest things to come out in 2011, I liked it that much that I even bought a record player [...]

The Stooges : Penetration [Purchase] Invented in 1896, the celeste --best known for providing the soft "celestial" melody in Tchaikovsky's "Dance of The Sugar Plum Fairy"--has also been featured in recordings by some of the greatest rock artists of all time: The Beatles ( "Baby It's You"), Buddy Holly ("Everyday"), The Velvet Underground ("Sunday Morning") and The Stooges (in both "Gimme Danger" and "Penetration"). When asked who played the celeste [...]
It's been a year since we first introduced you to Fort Frances , this week the boys out of Chicago have put up a cover of Simon And Garfunkel 's " The Only Living Boy In New York ," one of the greatest songs ever written, as part of their ...As Told By cover series. Fort Frances strips back the picking from the original and give the song much more of a rhythm feel which caught my attention from the very [...]
RAW POWER IGGY AND THE STOOGES (EUA) Edição original: CBS Produtor(es): Iggy Pop, David Bowie discogs allmusic wikipedia Entre todos estes discos, "Raw Power" é provavelmente o que conheço há mais tempo, de uma velhinha cassette que tanto terá rodado que ainda hoje recordo, quase nota por nota, o fuzz do James Williamson, quase berro por berro, a verborreia do Iggy Pop. Reza a história que,

Gallon Drunk’s seventh studio album finds James Johnston and co. in raging and raw condition.
Like the new Tom Jones album , Iggy Pop's upcoming release, Après , out on May 14, is all covers as well. I'm liking this new trend. Before you get on me for any inaccuracies in the credits below, I will say that I think the names in parenthesis listed are more who made the song famous. Not necessarily who wrote it. Here's the track listing: 01. Et si tu n¹existais pas (Joe Dassin) [...]

The newest inductees to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Red Hot Chili Peppers, were so happy about getting in that they decided to give us all a present. On May 1st, RHCP will release a digital covers EP featuring six songs originally written by other Hall of Fame members. It's called We Salute You and it'll feature their take on songs from Neil Young, David Bowie, The Stooges, The Ramones, The Beach Boys and Dion and the Belmonts. The full tracklisting is down below and you should also know that five of these [...]
As I'm piecing together this weeks mix I'm sitting on the patio at Epoch Coffee it is 80 degrees with a breeze, I have a triple latte and a Camel Light sitting in front of me, all things considered life is good... just one more reason I'm falling in love with Austin at an alarming rate.

It's hard not to imagine a lot of head-scratching from casual rock critics when The Stooges released their debut album in 1969. Sure people had been exposed to the swagger and energy of groups like The Rolling Stones, The Troggs, The Velvet Underground; but the world wouldn't be exposed to punk at large for a few more years. After all, The Stooges' self-titled album predated The Sex Pistols and The Ramones by about six years. The album, and especially tracks like "No Fun" and "I Wanna Be Your Dog" are some of the best punk-prototypes ever penned. The latter of [...]

News of outré Scandi jazz ensemble the Thing combining forces with Stockholm songstress Neneh Cherry was largely neglected and with nothing readily available for aural digestion, well, little wonder perhaps. However that their first collaborative effort The Cherry Thing was to feature reinterpretations of tracks from an eclectic spectrum ranging from DOOM to The Stooges and would be restrung by the ageless vocal chords of a lady now approaching her fiftieth year, this avant-garde work begins to assume genuine intrigue. They return to protopunk for the first sonic sample available: a rework of Suicide's [...]

The Record Company who we featured a few months back , recorded a grueling cover of The Stooges’ “I Wanna Be Your Dog” . It takes the track to an even rawer and grittier location that is buried in your local alley. The band is also set to begin an LA residency at Harvard & Stone in May. At each show, the band will perform a different 45 rpm A/B side each week, and then release it as a download the day after. It’s all to relish the release of the band’s own 45 release, [...]

, Christian Eric Beaulieu, y el bajista Mike Watt (The Stooges, fIREHOSE, Minutemen). Los tres han decidido unir fuerzas en lo [...]

Having this year unexpectedly reformed At The Drive-In for reasons of an exclusively financial nature and ahead of the arrival of The Mars Volta's latest LP next week, he of murky cotton candied hair or Cedric Bixler Zavala is to pop out another release this side of summer. Under the guise of Anywhere , Cedric can more precisely be charted everywhere contemporarily and he here joins up with Christian Eric Beaulieu of modest Liquid Indian and tripped-out Triclops! fame, Mike Watt of rather more substantial celebrity given his involvement with both Iggy and D. Boon's Minutemen, and [...]

Thanks as always to Its All The Streets who are big shots now that Douglas Wolk & the Rolling Stone tumblr posted about them - they're just finding out what we've known for ages!
