Words // Adam Sharp M.Ward - "The First Time I Ran Away" If this smokey, perfect little number is any indication of what A Wasteland Companion, the new M.Ward album, is going to be like, we're all in for a treat. Here's a collaboration I can really get excited about: Ty Segall and White Fence (aka Tim Presley) plan to release a new album, Hair , April 28. What's more, these guys are heading out on the road together. The shows will feature separate sets and some songs played together. They hit Chicago's Lincoln Hall May 10. That show also features Presley's other band, the Strange Boys .

Ruth Swanson Seeing San Francisco's Ty Segall at Halifax Pop Explosion 2010 was one of the most unexpectedly rowdy/violent shows I've ever been in the middle of, which was a bit surprising considering that as rough and garage-y as his stuff is, it's not all that heavy. Certainly not the obvious soundtrack for the bedlam that ensued that evening. Maybe it was just Halifax. Anyways, despite enjoying his music well enough, I've made a point of avoiding his shows as the odds of me getting kicked in the head seem to [...]

People want to love Tim Presley for his Darker My Love role, but as we're based in Austin, I'm more a fan of his Strange Boys role. All that aside, dude's also got a pretty nice little solo project called White Fence . This year he'll be releasing a two volume set of tunes, under the title of Family Perfume . The first volume is slated to hit stores on April 3rd through Woodsist [...]

Sticking with the new theme around here...this is a playlist with choice songs from a mixed cd I just put in my mom's PT Cruiser. It's pretty fast. 1. Yellow Ostrich - Marathon Runner 2. Plants & Animals - Lightshow 3. Brian TV - Something About Love 4. ALLAH-LAHS - Catamaran [...]
Burgerama, presented by Burger Records is on Saturday March 24th, 2012, and tickets go on sale this Friday January the 27th.

The all-powerful Reigning Sound roared out of Memphis with the realest soulful rock 'n' roll since the Flamin Groovies, the Real Kids and Esquerita all ruled the earth together. Singer/songwriter/guitarist Greg Cartwright makes 'em scream, shriek, cry and weep and he visits California far too seldom, so don't miss these shows at Alex's Bar this weekend! (With the Strange Boys opening!? How will we ever go back to normal?) Win tickets here , and then read this interview by Chris Ziegler. Your dad was a record collector—was record collecting your [...]

Words by Brendan "Listen, i've been told about apples all my life. i'm sick of them!! have you ever cried for a stranger? perhaps from the television? well then welcome to the kiwi. the newest fruit. it was born yesterday, but it had FAITH......" That quote comes from the rambling liner notes of Tim Presley's album Is Growing Faith under his White Fence moniker. I can't quite begin to understand it and having to type it out like this made [...]

Glaring omission from my Top 35 albums of 2011. Top 10 worthy. The Strange Boys Album: Live Music (Buy) Label: Rough Trade The Strange Boys - Doueh Tweet

Me and You - The Strange Boys // Buy The Strange Boys' latest release, Live Music , finds its niche in the unexpected. The vaguely punk nature of Ryan Sambol's voice, combined with the music's clear influence from country and blues, create songs that sound as though Elvis Presley sang them half a century ago. Sambol's voice is easily one of the album's greatest strengths, giving the vintage instrumental sounds a harder edge. Imagine the Arctic Monkeys (minus the British accent) [...]
Wednesday, December 14, 2011 Hey all! Throughout the year I've written about a slew of local acts, and now I'm telling you which ones were my absolute favorites. Take a look. Dan's Year-End List 10) Various Artists - Casual Victim Pile II - A worthy follow-up to one of my favorite albums of 2010. As with its predecessor, there are a few misses, but so many more great discoveries. One such highlight is the incredible track by OBN III, [...]

Live Music ("live" rhyming with "give" not "dive") is the powerful third LP by The Strange Boys . Veering away from the format of their previous releases, it was recorded in two parts: Side A in Texas and Side B in California. Surprisingly the album does not feel disjointed; instead the fresh environment leaves no room for filler as each half explores its own quality, conjoined by the band's distinctive sound. Side A of Live Music is filled with the big riffs, hooks and licks we expected of their 2010 album [...]
Scuffed folk and dusty blues define the young Austin, Texas band's third long player -- and it's their best yet. It's oddly exciting when a band doesn't arrived fully formed, fully accomplished, and fully matured. And it feels slightly wrong, and almost voyeuristic, to watch them mature and grow into themselves, developing, evolving, and making mistakes. But, all the same, over time it makes for intriguing listening. Such is the case with Austin, Texas combo the Strange Boys. Three albums in after just two years together is a prolific work rate -- this is not...
