Now that we're back in New York and settling down again, last week's festivities feel sort of like a dream. A beautiful dream filled with amazing music, free alcohol, and delicious tacos (and bratwursts). On the last day of SXSW, we took pictures of Strange Boys , We are Serenades , Kids These Days , and Field Report . Check out these photos taken by Sir David English below.
The first day of SXSW 2012 started off drowsy and jet-lagged but was invigorated and perked up by the sights and sounds of downtown Austin. Dismounting the R&R Shuttle Bus, I scouted a few parties and giveaways, including the Vintage Clothing Arcade, where Dubstep shook the walls of the room housing threads from the 60s-80s, before heading to the JanSport Party at Mohawk. Kicking off the day, Nashville's Fly Golden Eagle got the groove going with a seductive mix of R&B, reggae, and pop-rock. Next, Brooklyn's pride and joy, Bear Hands synthesizer-driven, punky rock brought the [...]
Every March, the music industry packs it's bags and moves to Austin, Texas for South By Southwest, a festival that manages to get bigger and bigger each year despite it's already gargantuan/beastly size. Given the overwhelming number of performances by over 1,400 acts, we've compiled a short list of ten bands that you simply must see. Many of these bands may not be on your radar right now, but with some luck, they'll come out of SXSW as indie household names, gaining more traction and playing bigger venues and as a result of this four day period [...]
[ RSVP HERE ] THE BONFIRE SESSIONS: BANDS AND A BONFIRE UNDER THE BIG SKY The JanSport Bonfire Sessions are back for our third year with events in five cities across North America. The idea is simple - a free outdoor concert featuring a locally adored band and the good vibes of a backyard bonfire with drinks, snacks and goodies provided by JanSport. Limited edition concert posters created by a local artist commemorating each Bonfire Session will be given out on site while supplies last. Can't make it in person? Live performances from each Bonfire Session will [...]
Wild Cloud Nothings Editition This week's Hump Day Power Play started around two songs: Cloud Nothings' "No Future/No Past" and Wild Nothing's "Chinatown". From there, it only made sense to through in the likes of Yuck, Black Lips, and Beach Fossils. The result was a smooth mix of shoegaze and noise pop/garage, which is quite good, in my opinion... but you don't have to take my word for it ! Hear it by simply clicking here . Playlist is below. :: Hump Day Power [...]
Ruth Swanson Seeing San Francisco's Ty Segall at Halifax Pop Explosion 2010 was one of the most unexpectedly rowdy/violent shows I've ever been in the middle of, which was a bit surprising considering that as rough and garage-y as his stuff is, it's not all that heavy. Certainly not the obvious soundtrack for the bedlam that ensued that evening. Maybe it was just Halifax. Anyways, despite enjoying his music well enough, I've made a point of avoiding his shows as the odds of me getting kicked in the head seem to [...]
Gothic garage rockers The Black Belles will embark on a U.S. tour next month in support of last year's self-titled debut album . Along the way, the band will share the stage with Bleached and The Strange Boys. Check out the tour schedule below, along with the Jack White-directed video for "Lies". People want to love Tim Presley for his Darker My Love role, but as we're based in Austin, I'm more a fan of his Strange Boys role. All that aside, dude's also got a pretty nice little solo project called White Fence . This year he'll be releasing a two volume set of tunes, under the title of Family Perfume . The first volume is slated to hit stores on April 3rd through Woodsist [...]
The all-powerful Reigning Sound roared out of Memphis with the realest soulful rock 'n' roll since the Flamin Groovies, the Real Kids and Esquerita all ruled the earth together. Singer/songwriter/guitarist Greg Cartwright makes 'em scream, shriek, cry and weep and he visits California far too seldom, so don't miss these shows at Alex's Bar this weekend! (With the Strange Boys opening!? How will we ever go back to normal?) Win tickets here , and then read this interview by Chris Ziegler. Words by Brendan "Listen, i've been told about apples all my life. i'm sick of them!! have you ever cried for a stranger? perhaps from the television? well then welcome to the kiwi. the newest fruit. it was born yesterday, but it had FAITH......" That quote comes from the rambling liner notes of Tim Presley's album Is Growing Faith under his White Fence moniker. I can't quite begin to understand it and having to type it out like this made [...]
Me and You - The Strange Boys // Buy The Strange Boys' latest release, Live Music , finds its niche in the unexpected. The vaguely punk nature of Ryan Sambol's voice, combined with the music's clear influence from country and blues, create songs that sound as though Elvis Presley sang them half a century ago. Sambol's voice is easily one of the album's greatest strengths, giving the vintage instrumental sounds a harder edge. Imagine the Arctic Monkeys (minus the British accent) [...]

Songs For Wednesday: M. Ward, Bahamas and more
Words // Adam Sharp M.Ward - "The First Time I Ran Away" If this smokey, perfect little number is any indication of what A Wasteland Companion, the new M.Ward album, is going to be like, we're all in for a treat. ( website ) Bahamas - "Lost in the Light" Equal parts campfire sing/clap along, hymn, and love song, this is the best song I've heard [...]

Ty Segall, White Fence collaborate on new album, plan tour
Here's a collaboration I can really get excited about: Ty Segall and White Fence (aka Tim Presley) plan to release a new album, Hair , April 28. What's more, these guys are heading out on the road together. The shows will feature separate sets and some songs played together. They hit Chicago's Lincoln Hall May 10. That show also features Presley's other band, the Strange Boys .
