Tuesday, February 17, 2009 Today's Quick Mention: Yes. Instead of sharing some new tunes I decided to spend my President's Day making sure that my couch was still comfortable. It is. Thank whoever. On a related note, my Xbox 360 is as fun as I remembered. Time for another EP! Enjoy. : Tahiti Boy And The Palmtree Family - That Song : Going hand-in-hand with my lazy afternoon yesterday was this relaxing number from Tahiti Boy and the Palmtree [...]

While this week's edition of our Friday Mixtape might not provide a great soundtrack for any Valentine's Day shenanigans, at least it will help hold your attention while you're waiting for that 1-800-Flowers delivery or in line for dinner at Olive Garden. After all, like always, below you will find the week's best mix of new singles, covers, and remixes, along with mp3s from a few up-and-comers you just might want to check out. NEW Singles: "Bayonets" by Amazing Baby "My Maudlin Career" [...]
Brah Records artist, Pterodactyl straddled a very thin line between nettlesome noise and noise rock on their self titled 2007 release, also known as the Blue Jay album. When they were on, their dinosaur squawk rock was a shock to the system sent straight to the spine of the soft rock indie rockers who have so far dominated the decade. Yet, there were times, where that squawk was so heavy, and so encompassing, that even this rocker had to run to the safety of a Death Cab disc. Here, on "First Daze," the first song released from [...]

The Strange Boys - "Heard You Wanna Beat Me Up" To get your bite-sized, retro, garagey fix for the day, this is what you want. From the Strange Boys ...and Girls Club , out 3/24 on In The Red .
I've never been to Austin, but in my mind, every pool hall down there plays stuff that sounds like the Strange Boys . The Austin-based quartet does that kind of road-weary garage pop that you find on good jukeboxes, wedged somewhere in between Highway 61 Revisited and your fifth Pall Mall. But where that formula might wear kind of thin, the Boys have enough good Southern sense to interject some 1960s R&B and Kinks-nodding guitar boogie. "Heard You Wanna Beat Me Up", from the band's In The Red debut ...And Girls Club [...]
Woe is going to be me if I can't see them again ASAP if not sooner. I heard they are opening for some of Black Lips May tour.........

Our friend and photographer Pooneh Ghana caught Friday night's Monotonix / Strange Boys show in Austin at Red 7 . Pooneh offers up this brief but all encompassing review: "Some girl up front totally busted her face open, and Monotonix played part of their set up in a tree...Strange Boys were awesome as well!" Photos of the insanity after the jump... mp3: the strange boys :: heard you wanna beat me up ***************************** [...]
The Strange Boys got a little bit of love from Rolling Stone this week, though the small blurb mentions only Austin, neglecting to point out the band's Dallas origins. Writes Austin Scaggs in Smoking ... Continue reading "Strange Boys Get Stoned" >

I have been really tied up with work and having too much fun at Free Week, but I will commence to regular blogging soon enough. I hate not having a bunch of tunes up here for you to check out. Here are a few things I have been meaning to post: Tonight I'm going to catch SuperLiteBike and Tia Carrera , then Ume and El Paso Hot Button on Thursday . I haven't had a chance to see The Strange Boys since ACL, so I will do that on [...]
When I asked the very intelligent and capable talent buyer Eli Anderson of the soon-to-be-reopened Crocodile Cafe, I was expecting a list of ten records he liked. Instead, he had sent me several well-written lists and deserves countless bonus points because he even showed his work. read more

The Strangeboys are a band who formed in Austin, Texas back in 2005 to much local applause: lead vocalist (rhythm guitarist and harmonica) Ryan Sambol, Roky-fanatic Greg Enlow (on lead guitar--Roky-fanatic from Texas, how could he not be?), brother to Ryan: Philip Sambol (bass) and jazzist Matt Hammer (on drums). The group is on a tour supporting Darker My Love (a band who has a sound larger than the stage itself) and played Johnny Brenda's this past Wednesday night. Their music is a mixture of freakbeat, sixties and psychadelic performed with high vocals "His [Ryan] cat-in-a-blender [...]

I feel kind of weird calling this a winter playlist because it's towards the end of NOVEMBER and its still 85 degrees here in the daytime. Today I was driving to the bank and didn't have my airconditioning on and it was HOT. I mean, what kind of holiday weather is that? My work even got in our winter playlist which basically consists of 18 different renditions of Winter Wonderland on repeat during the entire day. Fuck, right? So I bring you my Fall Playlist, Because Its Too Warm To Be Winter 2008. Strange combination but I'm loving them so [...]

The Strange Boys @ The Montalban Theatre/Dodgeball4Eva Event So today was probably the weirdest gig I've ever attended... it was in the Montalban Theatre and was um, geared more towards the althetically inclined so when Collie_Tsunami and myself showed up in leather.... well, it was weird and kind of awkward. This really great up and coming band called the Strange Boys played a free show at this Dodgeball event... Now let me try and describe the set up. Its a theatre... think red crushed velvet seats. So there is a stage and between the stage and [...]
Congratulations to Madonna for making quite a mess of Echo Park last night. By the amount of luxury vehicles taking wrong turns, u-turns-into-q-turns, and stopping traffic asking pedestrians how to get to the 101, wethinks Madge has quite a few fans that have never been to this part of Los Angeles before. We wish a fraction of that audience could have gotten lost enough to wander into The Echo
