The Stranglers try out the world's most ridiculous hearing aid. Wow, another long quiet stretch. Sorry 'bout that...things have been a bit hectic lately! Not that they're a whole lot less hectic at the moment, but I figured I'd better post before you all think I've abandoned the blog. (Which I most certainly have no intention of doing.) But onward we go: The Stranglers, with their song "Skin Deep," from their 1984 album, Aural Sculpture . It's a song that really grabbed my attention when it came out early [...]

We talk alot about how great the music scene was in the late seventies, but that only scratches the surface. This week, we delve into the lost gems of the punk explosion. There...

It's been a long time since I've spent time listening to The Stranglers , but with the punk legends set to release their seventeenth album, Giants , on May 28th, I thought it was about time. I must say, the music the band is making now bears little resemblance to that which put them on the map. I suppose with age comes evolution, and the loss of a sense of urgency. However, early '80s-style keyboard sounds are indicative of a band who have stalled rather than continued to evolve. Continue reading [...]

The Stranglers, "Something Better Change"

ARTIST: The Stranglers - [Album] DATE: 04-06-13 REVIEW BY: Bill Adams Let's hear a cheer for being playfully malign! The Stranglers had been basically out of commission for the better part of a decade (sure – they could still pull a crowd, but they were losing creative steam quickly after issuing their Coup De Grace in 1998) or on the 'Memory Lane' circuit at [view more]

by Bill Pearis After 35 years releasing records, what keeps you energized and motivated? JJ Burnel: I have always wanted to perceive things as like a kid and try to avoid cynicism and world-weariness. I try to maintain some kind of naivety so I'm excited by new things. And also because I'm a karate teacher, I'm always learning from my students. I'm what they call a deshi [disciple] in Japan. That's a useful thing to have in your mind. We're all students. Roger Kisby You can probably blame the entire music industry's post-SXSW hangover for this week's roundup of concert announcements being a little late and a little lean. But there were still some. And here they are. While I believe the official status of The Fiery Furnaces is that they're a going concern, it's pretty clear that the burner that they're on is pretty far back. Since they finished touring 20092s presciently-titled I'm Going Away , both Friedberger siblings have busied themselves in solo form. Matthew Friedberger released [...]

WHEN it comes to time signatures for modern music, it seems hard to beat 4:4 time. Four beats in a bar dominates the charts - so I thought I would waltz through my collection and try to find a few 3:4 tracks. No doubt some more musically-minded than me will point out how most of these probably don't count due to changing time signatures, or compound time, or whatever. But I reckon it's just nice to move to a different beat for once. Suggest any others in the comments below!
During their career the Stranglers have garnered a total of 24 Top 40 singles over four decades, as well as eighteen Top 40 albums. Hits include ' Peaches', 'No More Heroes', '5 Minutes', 'Duchess, Something Better Change', 'Always The Sun', 'Golden Brown', 'Strange Little Girl and Skin Deep'. Ah, so here we all are, back on the internet where everything of note seems to take place these days. Except this post of course. Sorry about that. Anyhow, as we gear up for SXSW, gaze at the sunshine outside and wonder if we can start anticipating Spring, and join the world in wondering if that damn eagleowl album is ever, ever going to be released* there is another week of gigs upon us. Not that there's all that much going this week actually, at least not all that much which I personally am [...]
In 1977 The Stranglers released their extraordinary debut album, Rattus Norvegicus and firmly established themselves as the world’s first progressive punk outlaws. Seminal long players like 'No More Heroes' and 'Black and White' followed before the band released probably the finest live album of that era, Live (X Cert) . Later that year The Stranglers surprised and surpassed all expectations by releasing the gentler more evocative album The Raven and it is [...]

Thanks to Thomas Bisset Photography for the photos OK here's the skinny on fast rising Elgin based hardcore punksters Cleavers who've made inroads onto [...]

'Süper Kahraman’ olmak zor bir iştir. Çünkü süper kahramanlar: sürekli kötülerle savaşırlar. Geceleri gündüzleri yoktur. Yakışıklıdır, erotiktir, milliyetçidir, kozmik güçlere sahiptir, daima uğrunda öleceği bir kadın ve uğruna ölecek birçok kadın vardır. Yoksulların, yardıma muhtaçların yanındadır, her an her yere gidebilir, her an her yerde o anılır, mutlaka onu anan birileri vardır.
Recently the Demagogues were asked to contribute a featured playlist for the incredible “mood based” internet based music streaming service Stereomood. Straight outta Rome the closest analogue to the service in American minds may be Pandora, but instead of using an artist as the seedbed for playlist formation Stereomood asks us to use a word [...]

"Violet Bones, a sweaty punk-rock group from Cambridge have a free download of their track ‘Bullets’ available! The song is from their debut album ‘Decline of Vaudeville’ which will be released 5th of November. They have signed a deal with Global/Rough Trade and the boys are also being shipped off to Germany in September to perform at the Reeperbahn festival to promote their upcoming releases. This year has seen Violet Bones complete two full UK tours, look out for the support slot for The Stranglers on 29th September at Jubilee Park, Huntingdon. They are getting great tastemaker reactions from Online [...]
Mariachi Mexteca feat. Hugh Cornwell - Golden Brown

With the wellingtons and Bacardi Breezers of yesterweek interchanged with Jesus sandals and inky viscous brews, Dots & Dashes' sojourn down in Kent was this year pruned to but a day; axed to one solitary hop as it were into the lamentably all too known... Bogged down amid the uncountable oast houses, as we wade through the pollen-swollen air and eloquent enquiries of disconcertingly refined touts the first thing discerned is familiarity. For Hop Farm seems to have all but entirely neglected progression ever since it was [...]
All words and pictures by Jimmy Blake June 29, 2012 “Get your back in to it! It’s going to be a long weekend!” exclaimed Gomez ’s Tom Gray, as the weekend’s second main stage act coaxed the masses to take a break from their couscous. The opening day of Hop Farm 2012 saw the festival’s eclectic blend of new and old working in perfect harmony, allowing punters to do the same as the generations took spells of hugging the security barrier, taking turns to reminisce and revitalize their iPods… sorry, record [...]
Golden Brown - The Stranglers - The Apple Scruffs Edit - Click to download I’ve always loved this tune. Every time it plays I end up playing the movie, Snatch, on the projector in my eyelids. Great flick. Great tune. Great remix.
