"It's not you, really, it's me." Apologies for being MIA lately. The usual reasons: work has me working, my free time has been costly, and then there's this little thing known as an impending move. Posts will be sporadic for the next few weeks. To make up for it, here's a massive jukebox upchuck full of favorite songs of late. Dusty Springfield – "So Much Love" I've been listening to so much Dusty In Memphis lately, ever since my trip to Louisville. (Must have been the "Southern" exposure.) [...]
The 80s gave birth to a lot of dark natured songs. This episode is mostly a celebration of such music. Again I've been plagued with bands crossing over decades – mainly The Pixies – however I've battled through to create a nice, well-rounded and downright fantastical episode. By dark, my general meaning is lyrically, talking of sex, drugs and death in a slightly less positive tone than days gone by. This music is the morning-after of the pop, rock and punk that it followed. This of course doesn't stop it from being some of the best music around and to [...]

mp3: Steve Miller Band - Fly Like An Eagle mp3: Bill Conti - Gonna Fly Now mp3: The Stranglers - Peaches mp3: Ram Jam - Black Betty mp3: Walter Murphy - A Fifth of Beethoven This year a bunch of my friends will enter their dirty thirties. To celebrate, I'll be joining some of them in Dublin for a 1977 themed party. For this shindig I've been compiling tunes that were, either recorded, released or charted in 1977. Here are a [...]

Whatever Happened to Leon Trotsky? The last time I saw The Stranglers was November 1st 1986 at Gloucester Leisure Centre - over twenty years ago. Bloody hell I must be getting old. I've always really liked The Stranglers , even when it was really unhip to do so. In the years 1977-1980 to be a real punk-rocker you mustn't have liked the old art school, middle class [...]

When I noticed that a new album from The Stranglers dropped yesterday ( Suite XVI ,) my hands got all sweaty and my head hurt. It was probably just been the sinus infection I've been fighting off lately, but a proper comeback from the Guildford gents had me pretty excited. That is until I saw that there's still no sign of Hugh Cornwell , who's vocals and lyrics were a big part of what made The Stranglers such an important group in the punk movement. It's [...]

Today's post was inspired by a pile of cat poop. When it came to assuming responsibility for household tasks, my wife and I ended up with an Edward Bellamy-inspired socialist arrangement where the odiousness of the task counts as much as its required time commitment. (This is not to be confused with Ralph Bellamy-inspired socialism, which involves wagering Don Ameche a dollar that one can take a Philly street hustler and turn him into a commodities trader while turning a privileged Ivy Leaguer into a common criminal.) Because I'm a man who values his time more [...]
Just a song, to keep y'all interested. An oldie but goodie... The Stranglers - Golden Brown
