In Memoriam: Bands We Lost In 2011

In Memoriam: Bands We Lost In 2011
In September we toasted the best new bands of 2011 . Bright futures for those guys! But come this time of year it's also important to remember the musical groups who called it a day. Some of these acts were taken from us before their time, while others imploded due to overwhelming apathy. Herewith our look at all of them, good and bad and who? . Thanks again to Matt Neatock for the video production assistance. Please hold your applause until the end. Read More...

Top 50 Songs of 2011 :: 30-21 [The world will unfold all around us]

Welcome to our annual countdown of the 50 best songs of the calendar year. Songs must be from an EP, LP or demo released during 2011, no band may appear twice. Each post contains a lyric from one of the ten songs to follow, a hint and a hook that stuck out clearly in this group. Today, we count down 30-21. 30. Tips for 2011 – One Year On (Part One)

Tips for 2011 – One Year On (Part One) Before I start with my end of year posts (favourite albums / songs of 2011 / tips for 2012), I thought I'd revisit my tips for 2011... In early December 2010 I gave fifteen acts whom I tipped not for stardom (though perhaps it would have been nice in some cases) but as artists that potentially could offer some of the finest releases of the year, now almost twelve months later I'll revisit the acts and (perhaps) see if I was right or not by form a brief (or not so in some cases) synopsis of what they've been [...]

Stricken City

Website [...]

Stricken City – Losing Colour album review

When I listen to Losing Colour , the first (and last) full album from Stricken City, I can't help but feel a wave of nostalgia; as if someone has taken hazy memories of youth and written a soundtrack for it. There's a retro nineties feel that comes across in the jangly U2-esque guitars and raw, earnest vocals with a hint of The Cranberries. The album swells and tapers with these elements painting a rich melancholic picture. Right from the start we're placed in a daydream. A cavernous drone punctuated by a distant horn with the soothing call [...]

Stricken City – Losing Color album review

There's a new wave of female fronted rock acts emerging out of the UK, and Stricken City could have considered themselves one of the best, had the band not decided to call it quits upon release of this second record. It's a true shame, because " Losing Color " is a secret gem that this reviewer will recommend to anyone who's willing to listen. The vocals, provided by founding band member Rebekah Raa, never shy away from taking chances. She plays with many styles, and finds a blend akin to something only a veteran rock star would risk. [...]

Stricken City – Losing Colour album review

Stricken City – Losing Colour album review There was quite an unconventional start to such a refined and astonishing album! At the launch concert show of their spectacular new album, Losing Colour, Stricken City announced, "We never stood a chance". This brave and unprecedented mature decision was the last chapter in the now extinct Stricken City. Losing Colour would be the last release for the London new wave rock-pop quartet. With a career of over four years encompassing their dilettante like, but remarkable debut Songs About People I Know and the finale digital pay-what-you-can release Losing Colour. [...]

Stricken City :: "Some Say"

Last week, Stricken City's last record ever, Losing Color, came out behind lead single, "Some Say". While the tragedy of a band on its last contribution is in play, the strength of the post-Yeah Yeah Yeahs, "Some Say" should certainly carry the band into some last fans' hearts. Opening with dissonant strings and brass, the band down shifts with pebbled drums and glittering synths. Each moment

New Music From Stricken City

New Music From Stricken City As many of you probably now, the UK band we grew to love last year Stricken City have decided to call it quits. Fortunately for fans of the band, they recently released their final album Losing Colour this month on Kora Records . Sure we may be a bit late on posting this, but we feel like we owed it to the band to pay homage to some of the sweet tunes they created. Enjoy new single "Some Say" below. Intercontinental When I Eat French Toast

Intercontinental When I Eat French Toast Spending five days a week listening to the latest vinyl releases from the worlds of house, techno, disco and the latest mutation of grey zone is pretty much the ideal job for someone like me. It does however mean that less repetitive sounds are sought away from the desk, and the current object of such solace is the latest and *gulp* last album from Stricken City . Not entirely sure why the band have chosen to end it all, though Losing Colour sees the band going out on a high! If you want [...]

stricken city "losing colour"

stricken city "losing colour" ...a dance-pop beat here, a looselimbed sway there, and awash with dreamy notes ranging from haunting saxophone solos to tropical island pipes and distant moaning drums...

Stricken City: "Some Say"

Stricken City - Losing Colour
Buzzes and hums. Clicks and clacks. A distant rumble that echoes back and forth between the ears. Stricken City, an indie foursome from London, make music that shimmers and jangles at all the right times. The song "Some Say" utilizes horns and keyboards as well as it does guitars and drums. Not to mention lead [...]

Stricken City – Losing Colour

Stricken City – Losing Colour Can an album be declared 'lost' before it even arrives? Holloway's Stricken City called time on their lush pop experiments at the launch party for 'Losing Colour'. Whatever the band's reasons for splitting at such an inopportune moment, this album is worth a wider hearing than simply as the epitaph to the short-lived career of an under-sung band. And if it was reaching British ears as a transatlantic import, rather than a domestic download from the band's website, it would probably get it. Opener 'Some Say' fades in through a haze of distant synths, saxophone flurries [...]

Stricken City – Losing Colour

Stricken City – Losing Colour "We never stood a chance." If Rebekah Raa and company are referring to the oversaturated music industry and the skills it takes to compete in today's digital market, I think the members of Stricken City are delusional. The band's debut, the EP or something akin known as Songs About People I Know , offered stunning psych-pop glimpses into what could be, and the band's new follow-up, Losing Colour , should have placed the band squarely in buzzworthy territory on multiple continents. Now apparently the band has called it quits, making Losing Colour [...]

Stricken City #5 - R.I.P.

Stricken City #5 - R.I.P. Last night saw the final ever Stricken City gig which is certainly a shame as the hour slot at the sold out Drop venue in Stoke Newington more than showed there is more than enough room for their lush indie-pop tunes in the world as they went out in emphatic style. A rousing "Five Meters Apart", the song that first hooked me too SC, "Bardou" and the wonderful "Losing Colour" were amongst my favourites in the hour long set. The pulsating rhythms, playful guitars and Raa's soft vocals which is capable of soaring peaks produce a [...]
