Monday: Silver Jews @ Maxwell's 8pm $25 If anyone had a chance to see the Silver Jews over the weekend at Bowery Ballroom they could tell you better then I could why you should go see them. But the fact that they are now playing the much smaller and much more intimate Maxwell's should be all the incentive you need to go, well that and the whole David Berman is one of the best song writers alive

It seems every time we base a mini mix on artists who happen to be playing a show that day, it also just happens to fall on a Thursday....coincidence? Maybe, but probably not. Thursday just always seems to bring it musically, and this week is no exception; as always, there's LOTS going on tonight. To help your decision-making process, consider our latest mini-mix below and choose your own adventure.... 1. "Breaking It Up" (Punks Jump Up Remix) - Lykke Li (@ (le) [...]
Another day, another batch of new videos. In this rotation, a band that EF has long been a fan of (Bowerbirds), a band that we've recently gotten to know - and that you now know a bit more about thanks to Leo's great guest piece on Wednesday - (Spanish Prisoners), and a band that we need to get to know much better judging by this excellent (and brand new) single (The Subjects). So there you have it, watch and get to know all three for yourselves, you won't be disappointed. [...]
http://www.vimeo.com/1519960 The Subjects, "Goldenshire Boogie" (Pretty Activity Records, 2008) The story of how Brooklyn Pavement-devotees the Subjects met is kind of cute. Back in 2004, rockers Dave Sheinkopf and Joe Smith were teaching in a Manhattan high school, when they were introduced to students and fellow musicians Jimmy Carbonettie and Matt Iwanusa, and thought, "Hey, let's start a band and call ourselves the Subjects." Some might think this idea is weird, but hey, it beats the kind of shit Mary Kay [...]

Some good shows in the region on Thursday. Here are the highlights: Swedish pop army (over 20! members) I'm From Barcelona are gracious enough to come to Philly for one of only two East Coast shows. It is very Polyphonic Spree-esque. And for added enjoyment, Pepi Ginsberg is having a record release party. Catch them both at the First Unitarian Church . Its an (almost) all Philly line-up at The Khyber . On the bill is [...]

Sod it. That band had a lot of potential. The Chalets - Nightrocker (2fm session) The Chalets - Gay Holiday (2fm session) The Chalets - Go Go Don't Go (2fm session) It's a shame, really. Hopefully this will lead to a bunch of excellent solo projects. --- In other news, that big ole' Texan festival where the Chalets once chaleted is coming up again; here's a run through some of my favourite mp3s from their selection: Oh No! Oh [...]

I've done that all my life." [...]

I get a ton of promo emails these days and don't always go through them very thoroughly. So, putting a post up with a few of these promo's will at least get some exposure for these bands. Let me know if you like any of them. Soular: mp3 Love Crash Heal Soular Website Soular Myspace The Race: [...]
The Subjects - I Could Never Tune You should know these guys by now - the Subjects, who we featured on our first compilation, are a quartet of New York City boys - two teachers & two (former) students - who make the most excellent of indie rock. Their first full-length album, With The Ease, Grace, Precision and Cleverness of Human Beings, was released this last week on Pretty Activity Records - an album long in the making, recorded over a year ago in the lead-singer/bassist's parents' basement in Maryland, with the songs tuned, refined and worked out via...

First off, The Death Ships, “Seeds of Devastation,” is not the hardcore metal album I expected it to be from the package. Instead, I found breathy Alan-Parsons-style vocals and pop Americana music poised for Adult Contemporary FM playlists. The band, on Undertow Music, is tight but subtle. The tempo shifts and interplay between the vocals and the guitars moves quietly, without drama. In fact, I’d like it if a few of the songs had more build to them—without that tension, the record can get kind of “same-y.” Still, on the whole [...]

I don't know why Britney Spears checked into rehab and don't know if Anna Nicole Smith was murdered, but I do know that while much of the pop culture world is focused on these two stories there is some music being made worth checking out! SXSW announced its official lineup yesterday and as always have some great bands lined up to play. Their official shows include Iggy Pop and the Stooges and

Has everyone had enough love, chocolate and hallmark bullshit for one day? I think I forgot it was V-day like at least 5 times through out the day. Who cares? I am not a big chocolate person so it is not really all that exciting for me. What is exciting? A little sneak peak to get you all as excited as I am for this Tuesdays releases... The Subjects will release their full length indie-rock album, with the ease grace precision and cleverness of human beings [...]

Last October, I posted a single from Patrick Wolf 's new album, The Magic Position , which was the very riveting and catchy 'Accident & Emergency'. Though I outgrew the song quickly after initial enjoyment, it had me curious about The Magic Position for the next several months. I wondered whether the other songs on the album would be in the form of catchy pop songs like 'Accident & Emergency' or more similar to his previous release, Wind in the Wires , featuring emotionally charged [...]

Pittsburgh 27, Cleveland 7 I don't like these Thursday night games. I'm sorry, but Thursday is the best night of television and I don't need one more thing messing with my TV show decision making. Willie Parker, despite a fumble, ran all over Cleveland and put together a 223 yard showing with a touchdown. Parker is the first player in Steelers history to have two 200-yard games in a season. Ben Roethcheesburger threw for a touch and ran one in as well. Cleveland has only managed one touchdown in [...]

The Subjects are a band comprised of two teachers and two former students from a Manhattan high school. After forming to play a school carnival in 2004 they realized a common goal of making music. They quickly got their act together and played shows around New York. The Subjects recorded the EP after a tour spanning from Michigan to Boston. The EP was recorded on a four-track cassette machine in a weekend. It is self-released. The follow-up release LP is in production and is slated for a winter release. The forthcoming album is named 'With The Ease, [...]

I swear, CMJ kills me. Tonight between 11pm-1am, four of my favorite bands are playing almost simultaneous sets in four different venues across the city. I still don’t know if I’ll wind up at Headlights , Silversun Pickups, iForward, Russia! , or The Shins , though I’m starting to think that I’ll wait until the very last minute to decide based on my mood. The one thing I do know is that I’ll be hitting Northsix after dinner to see one of my favorite Brooklyn bands, The Subjects , play a set. [...]
