This may not be fresh off the press but back in March, Alex Turner (of Artic Monkeys fame) was enlisted to make the soundtrack to a little film called Submarine. I've yet to watch the movie but it must be said that he worked his magic with the music. Turner was given even more scope to show off his excellent song-writing ability and its present on each of the six tracks. My pick of the bunch is Stuck On The Puzzle which goes down very smoothly. Alex Turner: [...]

The 902s supertrend trip hop has kept kicking despite its star performers' shifting sound (I'm looking at you, 3D and Beth Gibbons). Here is a collection of oldies, newsies (yay The Submarines!) and hopefully stuff you haven't yet grooved to in a bit of a daze. The Submarines - 1940 Massive Attack - Protection Lamb - Trans Fatty Acid Bitter:Sweet - Don't Forget to Breathe Portishead - Numb Sneaker Pimps - Post-Modern Sleaze Mudville - Surfer Girls Goldfrapp - Let It Take You Bergman - [...]
Click here to view the embedded video. Dark Captain may sound familiar to TLOBF readers in the same way as you'd know who I was talking about if I just said "Godspeed". The London-based five-piece formerly took the more elongated name Dark Captain Light Captain, but decided to drop off a few syllables to save us all a few more seconds every time we talk or type about them. Because this is the modern world now, you know, everybody has coffee to go and meals while walking. Eeesh. [...]
. . . The Submarines - "Shoelaces" [mp3] The Submarines remind me of what Matt and Kim would be like if they weren't so preoccupied by pretending to be cool or Yacht if they weren't trying to prove how "completely scene" they are. This song is perfect for anyone wanting to deal with a break-up [...]

They've lost the "Light Captain" part of the name but not the meditative folkatronica-meets-krautrock sound. (And they've kept the drummer, called Chin of Britain. Is he a UK patriot of Chinese heritage or a man with a jawline shaped like Cornwall? We may never know.) The excellent 'Submarines' is dreamy and seductive psych-pop, bubbling away about a romance gone wrong and sounding like a sexier British Sea Power. 'Bellcurve', meanwhile returns to their trademark languid, lysergic late-summery feel, giving you a trembly shudder of pleasure.
It's always a nice bonus when a good album also benefits a good cause. Ready for the Sunshine is a charity compilation CD featuring fifteen indie bands from various countries - including Sambassadeur, Au Revoir Simone, Matt Pond PA, Taken by Trees, Jens Lekman, Camera Obscura and The Submarines. All of the album's proceeds will [...]

Let your thoughts drift away into the open with the angelic sound of East London five-piece Dark Captain , whom recently released the first single on their upcoming second album Dead Legs & Alibis . Mixing folktronica with melancholic pop harmonies (and even throwing in some traces of soft rock), Dark Captain can easily be compared with the likes of Thomas Dybdahl or King Creosote, to mention a few. The album is out on LOAF recordings on October 17th, and can be pre-ordered right here . You can also download "Submarines" and "Bellcurve" for free [...]

Call me old fashioned but my first reaction when Burger 21 , an upscale burger diner located in Westchase, asked me to come to a tasting was "I'd love to try your fries and shakes but I won't be eating any burgers, I'm a vegetarian." I was quickly assured that this is the 21st century and they do offer two vegetarian options at their restaurant (as most places, except Applebees , do now). I quickly hopped in my horse and buggy and made the two day trip to the restaurant. [...]

photo by ti-rouge I made this mix for my dear friend Amy who has- as our friend Andrea put it- a clapping fetish, but it turned into something that I really enjoy listening to. As implied, the theme of this mix was clapping. When I started collecting them for the first time I really examined which tracks included actual clapping, synthesized clapping, a tight snare hit, or just a catchy beat and decided to include them all. Since not all the songs contain actual clapping, [...]
Can you believe that the year is already half over? Yeah, neither can we. Here are our 20 favorite tracks of 2011 from January through June, featuring everything from indie rock to folk to punk and creating a narrative of what the year has been like for us so far. Amanda Palmer - In My Mind I sometimes forget how very much I adore this song, then when it comes up on my iPod, I'm in love all over again. This is a really honest self narrative that I relate [...]
