Vic Godard by Julian Baker (2009) This week I'm very happy to bring you the Stupefied playlist from Mr. Vic Godard. Never one to follow trends, Vic was already on to the post punk style while taking part in the initial punk rock explosion in London during the mid 70's. In the 80's he moved on to lounge, and then northern soul. Vic knows good. Vic knows tunes. Vic knows good tunes. Starting Thursday, he'll be on tour across the UK on the Vic.ism tour [...]

"A rare document from one of British Punk’s most hermetic groups – but one whose stature has grown and grown in the intervening four decades. This was a promotional handbill, printed both sides on thick paper, issued out of Rehearsal Rehearsals, Bernard Rhodes’ HQ – probably in early 1978, to coincide with the first Sect single (and the only one on Rhodes’ Braik Records), "Nobody’s Scared / Don’t Split It ." Continue reading about this beautiful & rare piece of ephemera over at Jon Savage's site . He doesn't post often, but when [...]

A bunch of guys I'd seen loads were going crazy about Subway Sect. Actually, most of them were standing looking at just this one guy, who was going crazy on his own. This guy was a bit of a loudmouth. I'd noticed him in Probe before. But his face was so animated, I stood and gazed at him. He wore a black leather jacket and black combat pants. He had a Clash T-shirt under the jacket, which was zipped halfway. His hair was a natural black and gelled into a boyish quiff. In fact, everything about him was boyish. He [...]
January 1942: 500 Wehrmacht soldiers found themselves surrounded by the Red Army on the Eastern Front. Suffering in temperatures of –22 Fahrenheit, marching through snowdrifts that at times reached waist high, soldiers began to lie down in the snow to die. Six hours into their escape they claimed they could go no further. Commanders made [...]

Dear Mr Boogaloo - Have you managed to get all your make up off from last week? No? Me neither. Here's the story from my pumpkin patch - wonders The Great Pumpkin delivered to us here in the UK: Hey! I know I mentioned Rough Trade in my last letter – but you might like to know there’s a documentary called The Story Of Rough Trade – you can watch it here . I love Geoff Travis. Hair and No Hair. I like [...]

Vic Godard, Sexual Objects, Spectorbullets, plus film: March 10, 2011, Newcastle
This is never easy for me, but at least I got this together ahead of time year. And in case you're thinking "who gives a crap?", don't worry...I'm under no delusions about anyone wondering what I loved this year (and if you visit regularly you'll know), but I like running it here as a matter of record. In no particular order, and with no further ado: 01. Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings - I Learned The Hard Way (Daptone) (CD, MP3, vinyl) [...]
Before - the Velvet Underground: After - the Subway Sect:

October 11 will see the release of a new album, We Come As Aliens , from Vic Godard & the Subway Sect. As I await my signed copy in the mail, Vic was kind enough to let me give away an MP3. Have a listen (and download if you'd like) to "Out of Our Zone" below while reading Vic's comments on the new album and his current line-up. There's also a video which serves as a preview of several tracks from the LP, and it sounds really great - fans will not be disappointed. If you're in London there [...]

Origami cleverness from here When I first saw it, I didn't believe it. I thought it was a joke, something crafted by a latteklatsch of ultra-cool, web-savvy, hyper-ironic hipsters with designer haircuts. But it's not. It's real. And it made me nauseous. Step right up folks, you too can have the ultimate Rock & Roll Experience . Yes, for a mere $7,999 you'll get to play in a rock band with "world-famous musicians!" Jam with "iconic rockers!" [...]

If the recent events in the Twin Cities have had a certain mephitic familiarity to them, well.... They aren't without precedent. Oh, I'm sorry. Was that offsides? Too fucking bad. Yes, the G.O.P. hasn't advocated the liquidation of undesirables...openly, but that doesn't mean that there aren't other parallels. Claiming a monopoly on patriotism and love of country? Check. Demonizing the opposition as traitors? Check. Claiming alliance with the clean-leaving regular folks against the decadent elites? Check. Stressing ignorance [...]

good afternoons, people! today we're going all the way back to the 80's for this comp known as c81. c81 was compiled by nme journalist roy carr and rough trade pr dude christopher rose for the 5th anniversary of independent label movement in the uk and of course to show off rough trades wares. more info can be found here , via wikipedia. there's some real awesome stuff here, but of course there are a few turds too. but of course what might be pure shite to may, may be golden to you. so its all subjective. Though it came and went in the blink of an eye, of all the musical movements, punk tends to live on in the imaginations of people. Just look at the number of documentaries, books, academic studies, magazine cover stories, compilation albums, and fashion aesthetics that still draw on punk. Whether it really was as revolutionary as it seemed, punk has definitely become iconic and continues to influence new bands with its sneering nihilism and DIY-learn-three-chords-and-for m-a-band approach. My personal connection to punk is one that actually started relatively later in life than for most. I was about [...]
Time to go back to basics. Recently I've found myself getting all nostalgic for the Spirit of '77. I mean it, maaan. As I mentioned in my interview below, I missed the detonation of UK punk by at least a good six years and several thousand miles. Truth be told, even had I found myself at age 15 that year in Malcom & Vivienne's emporium at 430 King's Road , I would probably have been too repressed to do anything about it. But my curiosity-driven purchase of [...]
