The Sumner Brothers - photo by Nate Lepp Recently I received the December newsletter from The Sumner Brothers (sign up on their website here ) and for the last bit they have been coming with a new cover song each month. Well, to be honest they have been absolutely stellar. Some Cash, some Haggard and even some Waits. Well this December came a great track originally from Airon Dugas (or A.P. Dugas as he records under...I believe) called "Old Skin". It was recorded essentially solo from Brian [...]
The boys from Vancouver teamed up with the Calgary video collective Welcome to the West and recorded a great video for "Lose Your Mind." The duo had some special support on keys, and the result is a fantastic snapshot in time captured in the perfect setting. Web:: www.thesumnerbrothers.com Web:: http://www.welcometothewest.ca /

So hear it is. The result of months of hard work from some of our favorite bands across this nation (and even a special cameo from one of our favorite American outfits). Basically, the idea was simple: Pay tribute to a Canadian legend on Canada Day. Oh, and get some free content for the blog of course. In all seriousness, Gordon Lightfoot has been making music for decades and his stories are passed from generation to generation. Unfortunately, when asked about the greatest Canadian songwriters, Gordon is often left off the list. [...]

I completely missed this album last year and I'm not quite sure how. Hell, when I saw the title it took a little while for me to believe it actually was a new album, but make no mistake, it certainly is. To quote the band, "This record is for the fans - This is what the The Sumner Brothers sound like with a flat of beer, a few friends on occasion and an 8 track." In the Garage 2 is more of a follow-up to their debut cd, In The Garage , than the eponymous album that [...]

This is more or less a list of most played and/or my favourite albums from Canadian artists released in 2010 - I don't say "Best" and I don't pretend to have listened exclusively to Canadian content this past year. So let's not dig too deep into this post, it is simply a list of albums that really work(ed) for me, are better than most and are recorded by someone from the great white north. I am also not going into summary of the albums with each below as I am a niche genre music blogger, and lets be honest about [...]
![The Sumner Brothers – Self Titled [Album Review]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/2978144_lg.jpg)
The Sumner Brothers were recommended to us by our fine Canadian friends, The Deep Dark Woods. We've shown a propensity for liking the same music, it seemed likely that we'd be fans of Bob & Brian Sumner. In fact, The Sumner Brothers are featured on the same Townes Van Zandt compilation alongside The Deep Dark Woods. You'll hear shades of Cash, Willie, and Haggard throughout the album. "Pain" and "Two Hands" evoke memories of The Man In Black. The songs move slowly and are deeply affecting. Lyrics from the two include: Love [...]
Okay, just found this. Filmed in Calgary for Shot At The Dark via Calgary Is Awesome - find a great recordings/videos of The Sumner Brothers (from what I can tell down 5th Ave in downtown Calgary). Ummmm, where the hell was I? Oh well, there is at least one of my blogger friends from You Crazy Dreamers that always praises this band and tells me that I should convince them to sign to Yer Bird Records....hmmmmm. This is one transit fare I would have no problem paying. Shot At The [...]

every record, im guessing, is at least a semi-confessional, or at very least cathartic for the artist. of course, there's the likes of malkmus, who doesnt give away nothing, but yet we love him anyway. listening to the sumner brothers self titled record makes me feel like ive walked into conversation that i shouldnt be privy to. its not an easy listen if you have half a soul, honestly, and me thinks it sounds like it may have been a wee bit difficult/heart wrenching to put to tape. i may be reading way too deeply into it, but isnt that [...]

The Sumner Brothers From: Canada 'Country' music even when it's rebadged as Americana misses the target more often than it hits. Ok Americana swept away the dead dogs and divorce while keeping the desperation but, with the odd exception, it doesn't stir this Devil's soul. Every now and then a 'country' artist is able to touch parts that other artists can't. Canadian roots rockers The Sumner Brothers (no relation to Sting you'll be pleased to know) are one [...]

I'm not sure how many people know Canadian legend Stompin' Tom outside of that " Good Ole Hockey Game " track, but few know he's one of this countries best song writers. His catalog is chock-o-block full of gems, but one that has always hit home with me is his telling of the collapse of the Second Narrows Bridge in BC. Apparently, The Bridge Came Tumbling Down had the same impact on Brian Sumner of The Sumner Brothers : I remember the first time I heard that song. [...]
I'm going to start off this year with an interview from a band I wrote about here last year, The Sumner Brothers . Last year I wrote about In The Garage a week or two before the release of their self-titled album. Although the latter album has some of the tracks from the afore mentioned In The Garage, Pain , Both back and My Words being three, apart from a couple of A.P Carter tracks and an old traditional song called Yeah Blue , they have taken [...]
Since I started writing about musicians, I routinely get invites from up and coming acts. Most times I listen to a song or at least part of one, approve the friend request and never return to the page. It's not that the acts aren't good: it takes more than good to divert attention from the many tasks with which I have saddled myself.

myspace I recently moved back to Halifax and one of the best things coming home after 8 years is the chance to be around my dad again. Unbeknown to him, he helped shape my musical tastes with his obsession with Willie Nelson , George Jones (we shared the same haircut ) , Merle Haggard and Al Green . My childhood memories involve long car rides fueled by the sadness of these terrific artists, despite my constant attempts to throw hip hop into the ole tape deck. [...]

When I wrote about The Sumner Brothers debut album, In The garage, I talked about how cool life is in the modern internet age. We're quite lucky these days that anyone with the desire can seek out and discover these little gems a complete continent away. And make no mistake, The Sumner Brothers are just that, a gem. If you'll shut up, sit down and listen, the music these guys make will make you feel. Sometimes it'll bed good, sometimes it might be empty and desolate but it's always something and isn't that the hallmark of great music, the [...]
I first briefly mentioned The Sumner brothers when I wrote about The Wood brothers on this blog here . From British Columbia they have just released their first album In the garage available here which they kindly sent me last week. A band that really wear their hearts on their sleeve especially on the track both back , a song about wanting his late father back in his life but also on the track Pain where the first line " better look over what I got cause it won't last [...]

I've probably written about 3000 different bands over the past 4 or 5 years, I've forgotten about most of them but there are always a few that stick with me for one reason or another. Of course the main reason is always the music, but sometimes it's the process of discovery that is memorable or an interaction with the artist that makes them stand out. The Sumner Brothers are a combination of all three reasons. Songs:Illinois must have been some of the first press they received since portions of my review of their debut record [...]

The Sumner Brothers are proof that the internets are good. Their myspace page was forwarded to me by a friend who thought I'd be interested in them for a Myspace Band segment . He was correct. As I listened to their songs I thought about what I might say about them until "Going Out West" started. About two minutes into it I was buying the CD. It arrived right before Christmas, and has been in rotation on our ancient 3 disc CD player ever since. The Sumner Brothers are an unsigned group from Canada. Ten years ago there would [...]
