We are extremely excited to announce that we will be starting a monthly feature on July 1, Canada Day, titled From the Artists Perspective. In this monthly feature we are working in partnership with many Canadian artists, a producer, and a few promotional companies to bring you this monthly feature which will include two aspects. The first aspect will be asking Canadian artists to give their viewpoint on an assortment of topics surrounding the music industry. The second aspect will be having some artists provide their opinion on a track from fellow Canadian artists. We will be partnering with Sonicbids [...]
Canadian cuties (and boy/girl duo) The Superfantastics just wrapped up the short homeland tour they'd announced last month in support of their latest, the 7" EP Choose Your Destination . Now, Stephanie and Matthew just sent word that they'd completed a clip for one of Destination 's songs, "Turn On Me". The fuzzy, jangly song gets a simple performance video shot (directed by drummer Stephanie d'Entremont herself) and it's just the way we picture the duo: all hanging out, playing and smiling with a hilarious appearance from a Led Zeppelin-esque double neck guitar. And what's better [...]
(photo by Chris Smith) Super rad bubblegum-fun Canadian indie pop duo The Superfantastics (who, you may be aware, are one of our favorite finds from the last year or so) have been laying low lately, not really coming up for air to make a blip on the old radar here, recording a 7" called "Choose Your Destination" and working hard on a follow-up to 2007's Pop Up Book . But that's about to change as the boy/girl harmonies are about to explode as they tour around their native country in the next [...]

The Superfantastics are a Halifax, Nova Scotia indie pop duo who have been around for a few years now. I reviewed their material a few years back when I first heard them. Matthew MacDonald and Stephanie d'Entremont make up the band whose video for their track 'Tonight Tonite' was nominated for video of the year at the ECMAs 2008! Matthew gave us his picks for his favorite music of 2008. Raised on Indie: What was your favorite album released in 2008? [...]
Date: March 8, 2008 Venue: Criminal Records Finally, the last of my CMW posts is here! Next year I'll definitely condense things a little more. That said, even though I've already discussed both The Superfantastics and Dog Day in previous entries, it'd be a shame to neglect this stacked and snowy Saturday evening in-store lineup at Criminal Records . Kicking off [...]
Computer geeks and music fans, rejoice! Today's Three Of A Kind is three songs about computers and codes. The first band is even named in a coding-related way! MJ Hibbett & the Validators came up trumps with this wonderful paean to old home computing consoles (I still have my Spectrum ZX+2 in a cupboard downstairs), which was released as an internet single in 2000. MJ Hibbett & the Validators - Hey Hey 16k mp3 (available for 7 days) Listen to more at their myspace page and buy [...]

It would not be an exaggeration to say that the first 20-25 minutes of KRS-One's show last night at the Marquee was one of the coolest things I have ever seen live and in person. But first I'll recap the start of my evening, which was spent at the Seahorse. Of course you remember from my preview post that there were three acts playing the Seahorse, The Superfantastics, Dog Day, and Immaculate Machine. I got to the bar at shortly after nine to meet up with Herohill associates Barbara and [...]

I have been very lucky with my band choices during Canadian Music Week. In the past years, I fell in love with bands like Great Lake Swimmers and The Nymphets; this year, I discovered a wonderful duo from Halifax, Nova Scotia called The Superfantastics. Being very impressed by their set at Criminal Records last Saturday, I bought Choose Your Destination , a five songs 7" EP from the band. Much like their performance that night, the EP is full of the duo’s charming vibes; in addition, it is full of catchy indie pop songs with cheesy but very adorable [...]
In a continued effort to provide descriptions of my favourite shows from last week's festivities, today I'm combining diverse standalone sets from The Superfantastics and Spy Machine 16 for an all "S" edition of live reviews. Jumping back to where I left off with yesterday's post , I pried myself away from the Horseshoe on Thursday night just in time to run down the block to catch The Superfantastics at the Cameron House. Of course, seeing as this meant that I was missing the Sunparlour Players , you'd have thought that [...]

There are a couple of albums out on this Leap Year week that you should certainly get your hands on, which otherwise is relatively minor in regards to the amount of new releases. I've mentioned Beach House's sophomore LP Devotion many, many times over the past few months, so of course, I can't recommend this one enough. It never really touches on the same emotions as the first album, but the songwriting and music is definitely stronger and more focused this time around. And as evidence from a few tracks like "You [...]
Ghostland Observatory - now on tour (and selling out!) photo by Gregory A. Perez Maybe it's the Leap Year on Friday that's scared off the labels from releasing such a bevy of new albums this week as they did last week . But just because it's a tad slower this time around, that doesn't mean you can take the week off. As you can see from Largehearted Boy's list , there are plenty of heavy jams and slow burns to choose from. Lookin' to rock out? Pick up the latest [...]
(Independent, Feb. 26, 2008) What can I say about the latest release from The Superfantastics that hasn't already been said by stalwarts like Hero Hill and i (heart) music ? To be honest, not much. Thankfully for the band, that's a good thing, as it seems everyone is enjoying Choose Your Destination . Of course, that really isn't a difficult task, given that this is a great little EP that will only serve to further endear this Halifax duo into your music-lovin' hearts. A nice bit [...]

I admire hustle. If you've seen me play hoops, this won't come as a surprise to you (the Ack, on the other hand, admires economy of movement, as his more stationary style can attest). But hustle is not only found on the court, as often you'll find some of the best/most successful bands are the hardest working. The hard workers in this case happen to be Halifax two-piece The Superfantastics , who are back on the scene with a new EP Choose Your Destination. I'm not the only one who's noticed the SF's effort, [...]
Bonkers over Conkers Sorry not to have posted for a couple of days. Oh, you didn’t notice? Phweww.`````` (simulated flicked sweatdrops) Today, a novel approach: I’m going to post some mp3s I’ve recently found and like. Maybe you will, too. (Post some mp3s, I mean. If so, please let me know.) Now. . . The Beep Seals – Stars mp3 – Delighted I was to hear from Jack Beep Seal (aka, "Cooper"), who

So here it is. The first installment of our cross-country spotlight. We chose Nova Scotia because, well, it's where we are both from. I can't remember a time when Nova Scotia was putting out so much good music, but any indie fans might want to look past Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver to the land of donairs , Bluenoses and Schooner beer . We tried to cover all the angles, giving you some folk, pop, rock and hip hop. Some of the highlights (for people unaware of the NS scene) are a new song from [...]
