Here's a scaled back version of my weekly picks. Not the greatest week overall (I think the FYF Fest is sucking up all the good bands), but some quality stuff every night. [Recommended] Unknown Mortal Orchestra / The Submarines / The newno2 @ Bardot (Free w/ RSVP ) - I saw Unknown Mortal Orchestra recently at the Satellite and they were pretty [...]

indie folk // singer songwriter The Sweet Hurt, Wendy Wang's solo project, has been around in various forms since 2003 - since then she's released a handful of EPs, plays for what seems like a thousand different bands (including The Bird and the Bee, Priscilla Ahn and Obi Best ), and last year, released her first full-length album, The Sweet Hurt LP . The album was well worth the wait; it's winsome and strikingly honest, and highlights Wendy's talents as a songwriter and instrumentalist. Like the name suggests, there [...]
It's an embarrassment of riches on the show scene tonight: ► Oh, the memories: Lou Barlow has assembled a version of Sebadoh (with Jason Lowenstein and Fiery Furnances Bob D'Amico) for the "Bakesale/Harmacy Remembering Time Tour," marking the re-releases of the 1994 and 1996 albums, respectively. They hit the Troubadour tonight, with Quasi opening. ► Shadow Shadow Shade's exhilarating residency at the Satellite comes to an end — the L.A. septet tonight is supported by / the Silver Lake Chorus and Twilight Sleep , as well [...]
Top 5 shows on a very good night for local music: ► It's officially the release date for Olin & the Moon's new album "Footsteps" — the L.A. quintet (augmented by string players) is celebrating with a Tuesday residency this month at the Echo, where tonight Coyol and Paulie Pesh support. ► Willoughby , with Henry Wolfe , plays the Hotel Cafe. I don't think I ever posted the video for Willoughby's "Frankenstein," so here you have it. The song is from 20082s "I Know What You're [...]

Well, it's the first of 365 days of 2011 today and there is no better way we'd like to start the year than to spend the evening with some of our favorite lady friends. The Sweet Hurt has been off galavanting with a some of the scene's most famous faces for the last few years but somehow she managed to produce one of the prettiest indie folk records of 2010 with her self-titled album (out now).

Gus Seyffert is one of those magical players that seems to matriculate to the good stuff. He's made a fine album as Willoughby , played alongside excellent local artists such as the Bird and the Bee , Mike Andrews , Charlie Wadhams and the Sweet Hurt , produced a slew of others and has an imprint of his own, Sargent Records. Earlier this year, he started the free "Sargent Singles" series — it was intended to be monthly, but his current gig as touring bassist for Norah Jones has stifled that — that [...]

Another mix inspired by autumn, and perhaps a bit of a bribe for the lack of proper updates. Although you should all be used to that by now. The tracks are the following: Magic Bullets - "A Day Not So Far Off" Backwords - "And Then Sigh" Britta Persson - "Toast To M" Lilies On Mars - "Electric Fits" Doug Hoyer - "Lakes Of Mars" The Hope Slide - "The Westward Pull" The Sweet Hurt [...]

After his two- (and sometimes four-) piece the Voyeurs went quietly into the night, singer-keyboardist Jonathan Hylander embarked on a solo project that would be come to known as Honey Loving Cells . He released a song per week this summer, culminating in this debut EP — and also collaborated with Wendy Wang (the Sweet Hurt) on a lovely single, "Everything From the Sun," which finds the songwriter minding his piano-man sensibilities, waxing philosophical about self-reliance and, as he is wont to do, ratcheting things up in the bridge. Hylander has assembled a quartet around [...]
