While the name John Martyn might not be familiar to all music fans, the English guitarist was a legend. Whether he was blurring the lines of rock and blues and folk, putting out some 20 albums over 4o years, or collaborating with Eric Clapton or David Gilmour, the music world lost a true virtuoso when he passed away at the age of 60 last January. Now, via TwentyFourBit.com , the man who has been called the father of trip-hop is being honored like any true music legend should be - with a tribute album featuring the likes of Beck, [...]
The Swell Season headlined a night of Boy/Girl bands on Sunday night in the legendary Hollywood Bowl. Opening the night was 'The Bird and the Bee' who released a superb album a few years back. Went to see a little world music singer-songwriter concert at the Hollywood Bowl put on by the wonderful public radio station KCRW on my birthday this past Sunday and it really exceeded my expectations... Which is saying a lot because I was pretty excited. The Breakdown: The Bird and The Bee were the first act to hit the stage. A folk duo infused with electro synth pop consisting of Inara George (The Bird) and Greg Kurstin (The Bee) along with some other awesome band members who [...]

We've known about a contribution by the Cure's Robert Smith to a new John Martyn tribute album since earlier this year , but now details about 21 more artists to interpret songs by the late, great British singer-songwriter, as well as their chosen tracks, have emerged. In addition to Smith's rendition of Martyn's 1977 classic "Small Hours," the as-yet-untitled release features newly recorded covers by Lisa Hannigan, Beth Orton, Devendra Banhart, Beck, Vashti Bunyan, the Swell Season, Vetiver, Blind Boys of Alabama, and many more. According to official site johnmartyn.com , more details (and possibly artists) [...]

Watching Inception last weekend blew my mind off, especially with Joe Gordon-Levitt's zero gravity action sequence. Yet it also reminded me that the last film I saw Leonardo diCaprio in was Romeo + Juliet. It made me feel old knowing that the onceTiger Beat fodder Leo DiCaprio, is now playing married men with kid roles and the goofy kid alien from 3rd Rock from the Sun is playing his slick and dashing point-man. Then I remembered how I loved my Romeo + Juliet OST casette tape and played it to death and also, that [...]

This one is a no-brainer for me...come on, Calgary Folk Fest . As most folk fests tend to do, these festivals attract a good sized crowd, great selection of artists and in particular, provide Slowcoustic the opportunity to see many, many artists in one music packed weekend. The festival is set in Prince's Island Park, and while working for a few years in the Eau Claire area of downtown, I always saw all these yahoos walking to the park with their blankets, lawn chairs and smiles on their faces every July. This year, I will [...]

With Oxegen 2010 just one day away, I thought I'd help remind you of what makes the festival so special. This list is for those of us who are not going, and also those of us who are busy packing those last essential items before we have to get the Dublin Bus to the campsite [...]

Recently, The Swell Season did a great cover of Candi Staton's "Young Hearts Run Free" for Levi's Pioneer Sessions —download it for zero dollars over here . But we wanted to up the ante on "free" part of that equation, so we've procured a limited, ultra rare, 73 test pressing of the song to give away to one lucky winner. To enter, leave your name and real email address in the comments, and write us a haiku about members of a band who hooked up but then broke up. Please keep the No Doubt references to a minimum.

Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News , New Music If Green Day can write a rock opera and bring it to stage, there's no reason to think Black Francis can't. As Slicing Up Eyeballs reports, a stage production based on Francis' 2007 release 'Bluefinger' is set to premiere on Nov. 12 in Houston, Texas via the Catastrophic Theatre . For those unfamiliar, the album is about Dutch musician/artist Herman Brood, who took his own life in 2001, after years battling depression, drugs and [...]
Whether you call him Frank Black or Black Francis , there's no denying the Pixies frontman likes to stay busy. So, when he's not working on turning his latest solo album, NonStopErotik , into an opera , Mr. Black plans on modifying the same songs for a set of exclusive and intimate acoustic shows across the nation. And by across the nation, we mean mostly California. The tour kicks of tonight (July 1st) in San Luis Obispo, CA. The next four shows of an 11-date tour are throughout California. [...]

Will Frank Black finally find consonance between a rock album and a stage show? The Catastrophic Theatre in Houston, TX is mounting Bluefinger , a rock opera based on the Frank Black solo album of the same title (via Slicing Up Eyeballs ). The album and musical follow the life and death of Herman Brood, a dutch painter and musician who's suicide in 2001 was preceded by a storied and tumultuous career. The musical will feature both songs from his 2007 solo album Bluefinger and Brood. Frank Black is working closely with the theatre to [...]
