e're reviewing some of our favorite (and mostly undiscovered) releases of 2012: You might think someone who calls himself The Tallest Man On Earth might have enormous, umm, visibility, so to speak, but alas Swedish singer/songwriter Kristian Mattson remains revered by a relatively small if devoted base of admirers. That, of course, may change with the release of his third and most excellent long player There's No Leaving Now (June 12, Dead Oceans). On the echoing heels of two exquisite 2010 releases -- the full length [...]

It's day three of my top 50 countdown, meaning we're in the middle and doing #30 down to #21. Par with how the previous two have gone, we begin with a pair of honorary mentions. * * * * * Honorary Mention: Pet The Ghost (73 Single) by Darlings I loved Darlings' self-titled LP from 2009 and their follow up EP, Warma in 2010 was pretty phenomenal as well. My first highly anticipated album of 2013 came when the band gave us [...]

Welcome to our annual countdown of the 50 best songs of the calendar year . Songs must be from an EP, LP or demo released during 2012 and no band may appear twice. Today, we count down 20 to 11. 20. Jinja Safari - "Hiccups" It was post-Vampire Weekend pop, but it didn't make it any less fun, or any more awkward when the band balked at questions about Graceland . When you're the seventh layer in the seven-layer derivative [...]

Of Disappereance". Un album compatto, mai sottotono, inspiegabilmente indie, succosamente folk, decisamente [...]

Top 12 Albums of 2012 (Julia) 12. Tramp - Sharon Van Etten Favorite Track : "Give Out" Totally enchanted by Sharon Van Etten's voice. Such a good album for a rainy day, and considering it rains most of the time here in Seattle, it's pretty much a good album for every day. 11. There's No Leaving Now - The Tallest Man on Earth [...]

1. Father John Misty - Fear Fun C roce, Skynard, Nilsson, Fogerty and Morrison had a baby and named it Father John Misty. Right out of the gate this album rocketed to the top of my most listened to list. Hooked in by "Well You Can Do It Without Me"'s Nilsson-like flavor and then drawn into the much deeper and more complicated workings of stunners such as "Funtimes in Babylon", "Only Son of the Ladies Man", and... fuck it, the whole album is fantastic. [...]

JBM - Stray Ashes ~ The Great American Desert - Carson City ~ Cold Specks - I Predict A Graceful Expulsion ~ Evening Hymns - Spectral Dusk ~ Father John Misty - Fear Fun [...]
2012...what a year of music. We got new releases from favorites such as Animal Collective, Dirty Projectors, Grizzly Bear and heard new favorites in Father John Misty, Nude Beach, Tanlines, and more. Last year Earbuddy celebrated one year of existence with the best 50 albums of 2011 . However, we've grown since [...]
For The Key’s year-in-review, we asked our trusted sources – our writers and photographers, XPN’s on-air staff, fellow bloggers in the Philly scene and even a few musicians – to send us their Top Five Whatevers. Could be the traditional music route – albums, songs, concerts of the year – or it could be only ... Continue reading

There’s that old adage: if a tree falls on the internet and no one’s around to hear it, will anyone read its year-end list? Well, let's find out! Even though we haven’t written a single post all year, rest assured that we’ve been listening to all kinds of great music, and some of it was even released this very year! And even though we're a bit rusty, we've got some records we want you to know about. This list is shorter than in years past, but we also feel stronger about each individual record than we have on [...]

Continuing from yesterday, here are the top ten selections for Bears and Bullets Top Albums Of 2012 : #10: Royal Headache - Royal Headache Two genre's effectively broke the mold to land on top this year; rap and garage punk. So to say one album effectively defined both is difficult. But among the glorious renderings that the [...]

You can check out numbers 100 - 81 here and yesterday's post of 80 - 61 here . And on we go... 60 JAMES LEVY & THE BLOOD RED ROSE - YOU SNEAK INTO MY ROOM A real mellow chill out tune. Reminds me of laid back version of the Divine Comedy. (SB) a [...]

(photo by cubagallery ) These are 50 tracks that delighted, inspired and fascinated us in 2012 and that we think are worthy of remembering long after the year is over. We present them here in highly unscientific ordered list form, with Matt's songs marked with a "-MG" and my choices with a "-TJ" next to them. To better spread the love, we've stuck with the one song per artist rule. Click here to download all the tracks in a zip and subscribe to our Spotify Playlist to stream them all. Enjoy y'all! [...]
About two weeks ago MTIB started whittling down a list of over 5,678 abums (5,679 albums to be exact) to bring you a list of our favorite albums of the year. This year we decided we shouldn't stop at just ten, but share all of the albums that were in the running as well. So, here you have it. The 50 finest albums of 2012, in our humble opinions. Although, we may not use as many big words as Pitchfork and we may not always be as 'hip', we do understand those words and we did [...]

... 12. The Tallest Man On Earth // There's No Leaving Now [ Dead Oceans ] The Tallest Man On Earth is basically my comfort music. I've played each of his albums so many times that I cannot imagine my life without them at this point. My family members might feel differently about it because I play them so often, but oh well. On There's No Leaving Now , he's incorporated a wider array of instrumentation where before it was mostly just [...]

(All week, we're counting down our favorite songs of 2012. If you missed any previous entries, you can catch up here . Enjoy the music). 40. Spider Bags - "Friday Night" Whenever I listen to this song, I make sure that I have a beer handy. So I can spill it on myself. -LVL 39. Grizzly Bear - "Sleeping Ute" When I first heard this track, I needed to [...]
Our year end lists are wrapping up at this point, but we wouldn't be a legitimate music site without a list of the top songs from 2012. Personally, I feel like this list is a thousand times more difficult to compose than an albums list because we're dealing with close to 400-500 songs in the running. It's been a long process trying to narrow that iTunes playlist down to 100, and I know some incredible tunes from this year are missing, but we hope you enjoy. Ladies and gentlemen, follow the jump for the ATH version of top 2012 songs. [...]
