photos by Alex Crick review by Jenna Pool If the early folky versions of Neil Young and David Gray were mixed together, you'd have a sense of the sound and feel of Timothy Showalter's voice and lyric. A backlit whirlwind of long dark locks sync wildly with his voice and electric guitar. Soft bass-heavy mallets drum at the hands of the bespectacled Chris Ward. The night opens with these two grizzly bearded men in black: Strand of Oaks. But the act people came to see [...]
After the record-breaking hot and humid summer we just had, Autumn and the cooler temperatures that come with it, is a most welcome change. Who doesn't love pulling out their sweaters and scarfs, admiring the lovely shades of reds and yellows, and the smelling the bonfires and apple cider? With the changing trees and temperatures, the music I most associate with the season is different too, focusing on the wistful, laid-back and mostly acoustic songs that wrap around you like a warm sweater. As we always do here at Music For Ants, we're proving a new mix of [...]
From the light-filled strums opening The Tallest Man on Earth's third proper album, there’s an immediate sense of shifted perspective, a return to see the world and a life through the lens of a fixed place. The man whose music always had a fleeting, nomadic quality, who sang “ I plan to be forgotten when I’m gone ” and “Kids on the Run” is noticeably more vocally stable, less pointed, and less migrant this time around. There’s a brightness to this album, an image of the rounded sun peeking from behind steadily shifting clouds. His songs are still [...]

After spending several weeks with There's No Leaving Now , I was really looking forward to hearing Kristian Matsson, aka The Tallest Man on Earth . Not only did I get to see him grace the stage, but the show was at Paramount, which is perfectly fitting for music of this ilk. Read on for more pics and comments from the set. Strand of Oaks opened the evening up perfectly, setting the mood, though somberly, [...]
Knotan Artists lose record deals; it happens all the time. But when it happens to an international artist and rather than find a new deal, they disappear off your radar entirely, well that's just a shame. Swedish singer-songwriter Frida Hyvönen was represented by Secretly Canadian for her first two albums, 20052s Until Death Comes and 20082s Silence Is Wild , but after that they parted ways and as such, the release of her third pop album To The Soul [...]

I had Friday off and ended up spending most of the day sanding down cabinets. They came out looking great; a natural light pine distressed with a hint of dark stain peeping through. Ultimately they will get two light coats of matte brown followed by white paint and distressed lightly. Yes. We are re-doing the kitchen. And I still had time to take a nice 25 mile bike ride through the countryside (hence this post's photo, taken just outside Rexville, WA). After the cabinet distressing will [...]
If we're keeping a tally, and we aren't, Lollapalooza's Saturdays usually end up being the strongest of the weekend. In 2008, it was Rage Against The Machine . In 2009, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs filled in for The Beastie Boys when MCA was first diagnosed with cancer. In 2010, Phoenix played the biggest show of the band's career. And last year, it was front and center for My Morning Jacket . Predictably, 2012's Saturday stacked up as the strongest day of the weekend with the top-billed headliner [...]
Wow. First Aid Kit has a new song out today called " Wolf " and it is undoubtedly going to be the song you'll be humming for the rest of you week. The track is a little more upbeat than previous First Aid Kit songs- its got a nice drum beat behind it and a real catchy hook to it. What a great taste for whats to come from the Swedish duo. I have never been more happy about this Swedish invasion that has been going on. In fact, I [...]

Green Man 2012: A Festival Review
By Russell Warfield August 17th-19th, 2012 Green Man 2012 might have been the year when the festival completely transcended my abilities of articulation. At the very least, I’m not going to be able to say anything desperately fresh about it, so let’s start at the most tiredly clichéd, lowest common denominator: we arrived in deluges of rain. Nestled into the crevice of the everlastingly gorgeous Black Mountain range, there have been years when I’ve actually, after grimacing at the swelling Usk on the periphery of the campsite, feared for Green Man’s [...]

a list obligatory. the dog days of summer.
This long, hot, dry summer is coming to its end. So, it's time to look at those songs for your summer's end. Well, I almost didn't have a topic for this week's list. I just didn't think I had one in me. I don't know about anyone else, but this summer has [...]

Lollapalooza 2012, Day Two: Rain Can't Stop the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Franz Ferdinand, Bloc Party or the Weeknd
Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News Theo Wargo, Getty Images Those opposed to the urban set-up of Lollapalooza often bemoan the weekend-long festival's lack of outdoor campgrounds and accompanying "vibes." Little did they know that by the end of Lolla 2012's second day, they would receive a Bonnaroo-sized injection of mud -- as well as people making the absolute most of it. More on that in a moment. Saturday started innocently enough, [...]
