MP3: Strand of Oaks - Maureen's Timothy Showalter's Strand of Oaks returns to Columbus on Thursday (8/2), this time opening for The Tallest Man on Earth at the Wexner Center . Showalter is one of my favorite musicians and always a fun interview, so I had to ask him a few questions about the direction of his just-released Dark Shores . Gone are the walls of synth of Pope Killdragon , replaced instead by reverb-less vocals and John Vanderslice-approved acoustic arrangements. You can find an [...]
I may have mentioned it here before, but making mix tapes is one of my favorite hobbies. At some point during high school, which I mostly found unbearable, I distinctly remember thinking that I had all these great sad songs, but they were spread out over too many different albums. Why not combine them into one powerful tape of self-loathing? Seemed a great idea at the time. I don't know about anyone else, but when I'm feeling down, I just can't stand upbeat music. I'd rather play something that echoes my mood; it's always done a much better job of [...]

I have been remiss in writing about The Tallest Man on Earth 's new album, There's No Leaving Now , but it's been one of my favorite releases of the year. So I was excited to drag my pregnant wife down to Union Transfer in Philadelphia for an artist who has been in heavy rotation in our house for the past several years. I always expected Kristian Matsson to be tall (a shocking assumption, I know), so it was a bit surprising when a not particularly tall man walked out on stage. My first thought: "The [...]

Photography by Nicole Holoboff The Tallest Man on Earth put on an incredible performance that will be very difficult to put into words, at Newport Folk Festival on Sunday. Being about the third to last artist of the festival, his set ran into Jackson Browne 's headlining performance; Kristian Matsson performed on perhaps one of the smallest stages and brought a crowd far too large for the small stage to handle. As Tune-Yards was finishing her set (where Kristian could be spotted watching secretly on the sidelines) [...]

Been a while since I felt this way // Follow Owl and Bear on Facebook and Twitter for contests, MP3s, and links that don't make it onto the blog.
Last night's double-header bill at a sold-out Union Transfer was a study in musicians doing more with less. Kristian Matsson, the title character in The Tallest Man on Earth is about as minimal a performer as one can get, bringing himself and an acoustic guitar onto the venue's cavernous stage, which was empty except for ... The Newport Folk Festival has weathered many a storm in its 53 year history. It disappeared in the '70s, nearly went bankrupt in the aughts, and faced a complete dry up of sponsorships. But last year, Newport jewelers Alex and Ani stepped in to became a major backer, the festival returned to non-profit status, and a Board of Advisors (Colin Meloy, Gillian Welch, Ramblin’ Jack Elliot, Jim James, and Ben Knox Miller) was established. Now, the festival has never been stronger, and even some damp evenings couldn’t keep the 2012 edition from being another in a nearly unbroken [...]
Tonight Strand of Oaks (a.k.a. Tim Showalter) makes a stop home with Pattern Is Movement 's Chris Ward on drums to take the stage at Union Transfer opening for The Tallest Man On Earth (a.k.a. Kristian Matsson). The duo has been on tour with the Swedish singer-songwriter in support Oaks' latest release Dark Shores , which was produced by John Vanderslice and Ian Pellicci. They also recently had the honor of backing Matsson during a recording session for Moog Sound Lab (pictured above). I hope that you have your tickets already because this evening's [...]
On the heels of releasing his latest full-length record, Dark Shores, Strand of Oaks plays Philadelphia tonight, opening up for recent Free at Noon highlight The Tallest Man on Earth. Knowing Oaks' main man Tim Showalter to be a fellow with broad-ranging and exquisite taste in music, we asked him to make us a Spotify ... Continue reading
British experimental pop star Charli XCX sinks into the sky wrapping herself up in fuzzy overtures and synthetic instrumentals. She sprung to stardom around 2010 after writing and playing songs for years. Her dad used to be a show promoter, booking the likes of Bob Marley and Siouxsie and the Banshees, which fed her desire ... Continue reading
![NEWPORT FOLK FESTIVAL 2012 PREVIEW [FESTIVAL]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/4415481_lg.jpg)
Newport Folk Festival is definitely unlike any other that we cover here on The Wild Honey Pie. Subdued in the best way possible, the people who filter through the entrance at Fort Adams State Park do so purely for the music, not to take part in any sort of “scene.” For this reason, the next two days are pretty much my favorite of the year. Filled with bands that span the folk/alt/indie scene, not to mention a location that’s incredibly beautiful (right near the water, which allows sailboats to come and drop anchor), there are few festivals [...]

Last night, my sister Kristen and I went to the 9:30 club to see the Tallest Man on Earth. I'm not very familiar with his work but thanks to Daytrotter and I Am Fuel, You Are Friends (or is it just Fuel/Friends?) Summer mixes, I had access to a number of songs. And then of course there's Last.fm which is where I listened to even more. I also found that the opening band, Strand of Oaks, did a Daytrotter session back in 2010, so we checked that out the night before, too. So we were ready. [...]
From the first resounding strums out of Sweden-born Tallest Man on Earth's guitar, the air filled up with an organic warmth that is hard to describe. Kristian Matsson is himself a seed, body clenched tight about his guitar and sprouting out green shoots of song, all crawling vines of plucked guitar and the broad leaves ... Continue reading

Today we'll continue our Lollapalooza countdown with part four. #4: The Tallest Man On Earth Obsession doesn't necessarily explain my recent fascination with The Tallest Man On Earth . Of course, I have an absolute urge to hear anything and everything Kristian Matsson creates, and I'm fairly confident saying that he's my favorite new artist in the past several years - but obsession is a strong word. In reality, I'm just very sure that he's one of the best artists working today and his ultra-romantic folk music is otherworldly. [...]
Tallest Man on Earth took time to record some of his new songs for WFUV. These pro shot videos are enduring takes on tracks from his new album, There's No Leaving Now. The standout has to be "On Every Page" where Kristian Matsson croons his reminiscence of youth. Matsson is a true lyricist and poet as Dylan is and his songs require repeated [...]
myworldmusicfriends.com Kristian Matsson is The Tallest Man on Earth. Not literally the tallest man, but that's what this Swedish musician calls himself. Original Website: myworldmusicfriends.com/

"On Every Page" Earlier this month we noticed a dearth in video clips for material off the Tallest Man on Earth's latest LP, There's No Leaving Now , before pro-shot live footage of "Leading Me Now" finally surfaced . When it rains it pours, though, as WFUV uploaded a session over the weekend featuring Kristian Matsson solo in the studio, 3 more new cuts in tow. His solo-electric approach being a personal favorite setup, LP closing track "On Every Page" is the most [...]
Veteran Philly lords of power pop Wanderlust just released a video for their song, "Lou Reed," the first track from the forthcoming album Record Time, which is due out in September. The band will have copies of Record Time available for purchase when they swing by XPN for a Free At Noon show on Friday, ... Continue reading
