It's been a whirlwind few weeks, finishing the kitchen project, rearranging the living room (the above photo is from that project) and now beginning to terrace the back yard. It's hard to imagine I found time to check out new music. This week's favorite discoveries include the new LP by The Maldives, the latest by Dana Falconberry and Art Circus, a phenomenal new LP by Woods, more great stuff from White Blood Cells out of Vancouver, and Upside Drown off a new little Olympia-based label called Antiquated Future Records. Tune in [...]

Headed by Brooklyn native Paul Winfield, Tam Lin evokes the aura of late-60's acoustic folk, creating songs that are subdued and guarded while allowing hints of vulnerability to shine through. Winfield is the son of a composer and a poet, blending the two influences into Tam Lin's fragile love songs on the band's fourth album, "Garden in Flames." The album, which was released last fall, covers an array of sounds by its ten multi- instrumentalist musicians, traveling through Winfield's heartaches and his battle with cancer. Tam Lin will perform at the Living Room on September 7th. - [...]

Wall Street losin' dough on every share They're blamin' it on longer hair Big men smokin' in their easy chair On a fat cigar without a care. More interesting however is the odd bit of resigned wisdom that follows: But that's [...]

Rosler's Recording Booth is an unusual concept album written and produced by Grammy-nominated songwriter Don Rosler. The disc features a bizarre set of new songs performed by an eclectic cast of singers, which includes Jeremy Sisto, Spottiswoode, Isabel Keating, Terry Radigan, John Margolis, Kathena Bryant (of The Hippy Nuts), Tam Lin, Jon Albrink, Tamara Hey and Don Rosler himself. Randy Newman and Kurt Weill have been named as influences for the music on Rosler's Recording Booth . The dual inspiration seems to have resulted in an [...]

Ok so Island isn't really the Island Records of old anymore, long since gobbled up by the corporate behemoth Universal, but 50 years is still 50 years. As such Chris Blackwell appointed the legendary rhythm section Sly & Robbie the task of assembling a Compass Point All Stars featuring Aswad, The I-Threes, Kid Creole, VV Brown, and Tichy Stryder. A great lineup but on the night each and everyone of them was upstaged by a pair of 62 year old buttocks. She may have only performed two tracks but Miss Grace Jones doesn't [...]
