This will be our third and final dip into the world of Virginia Astley after our posts for Promise Nothing and Rarities Part One . These tracks have been gathered from various third-party sources and so some are not up to our usual mastering quality -- but we must be grateful to have them in any form. We thank the primary donor, who apparently wishes to remain anonymous. First we have the Peel session from Virginia Astley, Kate St. John and Nicky Holland, known collectively as The Ravishing Beauties. This was recorded 14 April 1982 [...]

Creation Records' Alan McGee is quoted as saying, "Liverpool in the '80s was like Hollywood to me. The Wild Swans were part of the greatness of that city." The Wild Swans released one single in 1982 with the help of Echo & the Bunnymen's drummer Pete de Freitas who not only played drums on The Revolutionary Spirit, but also put up the money for the recording studio. The Wild Swans were the brainchild of former Teardrop Explodes keyboard player Paul Simpson. That first legendary single was nearly the end of [...]
Mancunian "mystery band" WU LYF releases its first album, Go Tell Fire To The Mountain.
By: Rinjo Njori After my "non-celebration" of the holiest day to an atheist Irishman I felt like I might as well nail myself into the coffin. So, check out Les Elite, Ocean Colour Scene, a new track from the Fleshtones and a long overdue and overlooked new track from Urge Overkill. Peace and Guiness! www.youtube.com/watch?v=-NlMTa I5FIY John Carpenter 's drummer Joe Albanese happens to be a Youtube connoisseur and general master of music entertainment. He can engage a group of people for days on Facebook in a race to name bands with the word "black" in the their names. Today he sent over a link to the video seen above, "Old Electric Boogie," a Youtube gem, inspiring us to launch a new L.A. RECORD weekly blog column. IT'S ALL FOR YOU, TUBE will feature a Youtube Mixtape contribution from someone really cool who [...]

I´m reading Juliet, Naked at the moment, which is quite hard to put down. Really should get busy to bring you edition 16 of Wild Weekend now... Ok, ok, here goes. The iPod´s on shuffle once again, and a surprise six pack in the works. No songs from Nick Hornby´s rockstar hero Tucker Crowe alas, but a whole lot of other goodies nonetheless. Such as Fallin´ In Love by American Spring, a Brian Wilson produced pop gem from ´73. Penned by Beach Boys brother and drummer [...]
It's Day #3 of The Submarines' Vinyl District Blog Takeover and John's pulled some tracks that are right up our collective alley: Tonight I went over to our friend, Jebin Bruni's house. We met Jebin while touring with Aimee Mann last year and he's a super talented keyboardist who's also played with Fiona Apple and Liz Phair. So, when I walked in to his studio the first thing I saw was this! (Aside from being [...]

And no, I'm still not wittering on about PJ Harvey . I'm referring to the near four minutes of music that formed the A-side of the 1982 single pictured above. Julian Cope might be a bit bonkers (as indeed can be evidenced from the track on the b-side of this single), but the two hit LPs recorded with The Teardrop Explodes at the beginning of the [...]

The last time you have to look at any hippies. I promise. @retrospect mukisa / retrospect. , thisisretrospect.com I didn't realize how difficult picking selections for Twitstock would be until I paused and analyzed the scope of what was being asked of me. Picking five songs that have and continue to influence me across genres is nerve-racking and painfully hard for me to do. Especially for all of the cool kids that [...]

Back in high school I used to write down the songs on Casey Kasem's American Top 40 while listening on the radio. It took me a while to realize that those charts were published in Billboard , and that the newsstand across the street from our apartment building in the Bronx carried it. It was expensive (think it was $4), but I literally read it cover to cover. Because there was no way I could buy it weekly, I kept the same copy around for months at a time, studying it—and one of my favorite sections were the [...]

Last week I mentioned that I would have been very surprised back in 1979 if you had said The Cure would still be churning out hit records 30 years on. I reckon however that I would have been even more astonished to be told it would be the same for a band that over the years was often compared to that of Fat Bob Smith and his boys... Again, this wasn't a single I was aware of it when it was released on [...]

White Lies From: Ealing, London, England Genre: Alternative rock / Post-punk revival / Indie rock Formerly known as Fear of Flying, Ealing glum rockers White Lies are already on their way to mega stardom having featured in multiple "ones to watch" polls at the turn of this year, including the BBC 's Sound of 2009 poll and the 2009 BRITs Critics' Choice Award. They were also the first British act of 2009 to achieve a number one [...]

Received an e-mail from Paul Haig the other day, and given that he's been so supportive of this blog in recent times, I think it's only fair and right that I share it with you:- It has been reported in place that the Cathode Ray is a new band formed that I've formed. This is definitely not the case. I've been very busy and wan't fully made aware at all of the developing situation. For reasons of factual accuracy and to save people a lot of wasted energy it is [...]
I have been listening to The Teardrop Explodes' Wilder a bunch lately. It is of course the remastered expanded version that includes the US mini LP Buff Vanilla. This 1981 album, the band's second, is a classic in my books. It is filled with Julian Cope's mad genius in full on psych pop mode. There are songs that deserved to be smash hits, with huge hooks and choruses. There are low key ambient
