Love this observation about television from Time's James Poniewozik : When I say "show within a show" here, of course, I don't mean a fictional TV show, like TGS or Itchy and Scratchy. I mean the particular phenomenon of a subplot or story thread that, for whatever reason, is significant and yet separate enough from the main story—either in tone or plot—that you feel like you're watching a tiny TV show that someone decided to hide in a larger TV show. [...] One of the advantages of the show-within-a-show is that it enables you [...]

The Last Days of Disco is the third film in writer / director Whit Stillman's series of comedies depicting young urban bourgeoisie lifestyle, following the more widely acclaimed and popular Metropolitan and Barcelona . Released in 1998 and set in 1980-81, The Last Days of Disco follows a group of WASPy Ivy League grads in New York City as they navigate their first jobs and search for romance in nightly visits to 'The Club,' a disco- and dance-filled nod to Studio 54. This seems so obvious , but like all things of genius, it is only obvious after you've seen it. Never in a million years would I have come up with this solution on my own. It's a problem we've all struggled with: you want a large, New York-style, foldable slice—a slice cut out of a pie 183 in diameter or larger—but the problem is, most home oven pizza stones just aren't big enough, leaving you with measly looking 63 slices that barely qualify as an hors d'oeuvre, much less a full on satisfying snack. [...]

Wow, wow, WOW! We've just received promos of a fantastic set of compilations from Disco Discharge . Hand-picked by disco affectionado Mr Prinks, Disco Discharge resonates with the disco-hungry aficionados, serious vinyl collectors, the disco curious and a younger generation of DJs, producers and music lovers who are beginning to appreciate the quality of the musicianship and production values of the vast repertoire that falls under the 'disco' umbrella. The music time-line spans the 1970s right through to the mid 1980s balancing a perfect blend of well-known classics with more obscure gems, all in [...]

'MTO' is the b-side of New Order 's ' Run 2 ' single from 1989. The single is decidedly rare so credit to you if you own or chance upon a copy that isn't pushing triple figures. It's rarity was magnified when John Denver threatened the band with a lawsuit claiming the a-side bore similarities to his ' Leaving on a Jet Plane ' - whut!? New Order - MTO [...]

"Duo Technique & Yaroslove is an excellent combination of high quality sound and their own unique style of music. When they first met in 2005 they've decided to work together, both having a rich experience behind, it was clear for them what exactly they wanted to do. This collaboration led to a lot of hard [...]

This one is going to take over. After hearing it in the Magnetic Man Essential Mix I have been searching high and low looking for more info about a release date. There is a promo vinyl pressing that has been out a couple weeks in the UK but the tune is coming out on Technique Recordings [TECH068] and is set to be released Sept. 6th, 2010 in all formats. Drumsound and Bassline Smith - Fu Manchu (Preview Clip) Here are a couple really catchy dubstep remixes of popular tunes. Roksonix puts a [...]
Two new studies seem to indicate that compression-only CPR is just as effective as compression-plus-forced breathing. The national average survival rate for heart attacks outside the hospital is about 4% or less, Pepe said, and only a quarter to a third of those who could survive are actually getting CPR, so significant numbers of people could be saved if CPR were used more widely. Studies in animals have shown that halting chest compressions to blow air into the patient's mouth reduces blood flow by a startlingly large [...]

I didn't invent this, in fact, I learned this technique from my cousin Mark about seven to 10 years ago. But Jorge Garcia (the actor who plays Hurley on Lost) is right, once you learn this trick , there ain't no going back.
Click here to view the embedded video. On this week's No Reservations, Anthony Bourdain decided to stay home and instead brought together some of his famous culinary friends (Thomas Keller, Jacques Pepin, Dave Pasternak and Laurent Tourondel, natch) to teach some basic culinary techniques, including: saucing pasta, de-boning a chicken (offered as a non-embed-able video preview ), cooking lobster, making hamburgers and slicing an onion. I guess the real question is why doesn't Bourdain have his own cooking show, built around his ethos, "I happen to believe you should learn [...]

Matthew Lyons is an incredible illustrator. Just about every blog in existence has written a piece about him recently - and it's no surprise - his work is absolutely stunning. As I mentioned in my post, the combination of his vast imagination and impeccable eye for color and composition begets some really exciting work. I asked Matthew if he would prepare a short process description about one of his recent works. What follows is Matthew's description of how he created the piece you see above, The Snide of a Scoundrel Man. [...]

I do not know what to write. I am sitting here staring at the screen, running sentences in my head, and turning my music on and off. Earlier I went foraging for food (in hopes of sparking some magical words), but ended up getting distracted by Arrested Development for 20 minutes. This happens just about every time I sit down to do anything. I'll probably go play the guitar between this paragraph and the next. Of course this is a familiar situation. Often referred to as "writer's block", the concept of an inspiration rut is unfortunately very [...]
