For our American readers, a happy Fourth of July to you! For everyone else, a happy weekend to you! And like the awesomely awesome online music publication that we are, we got a treat for all of you. Ok, so it's not on the Foo Fighters playing for Barack level and yes, it's no different than what we present you every week, but hey, what else would you call a mix of this week's new singles, remixes, and covers, along with mp3s from some up-and-comers. You're welcome. NEW Singles: "Rats" [...]
The best local CDs of the year (thus far) & Little Man.
Economy is where the LA melody-mavens of The Tender Box score all their points. Specialized in rock music with a dark undercurrent, expertly equipped to do as much as it can with as little as possible. Some guitar, a throbbing bass line, an insistent drum pound, a touch of sampling and synth when it fits, and a perfect vocal melody or two - there's not much else these guys have use for, and it's a recipe that suits both the concert hall and the dancefloor. After all, this is a band whose latest release [...]

In their early days, the 88 used to get compared a lot to the Kinks. Now, as they showed on last year's "Not Only ... But Also," they've come into their own, and three albums into their career they can flex their musical muscles any which way. Tonight at the Key Club, the L.A. outfit will play two sets at the Key Club — at 9:15 they will cover Bob Dylan's 44-year-old masterpieece "Highway 61 Revisited" and follow with a set of their own material. ... The Manchester Orchestra hits the Troubadour behind their [...]

So much music, so little time. I've fallen woefully behind when it comes to acknowledging non-album releases (EPs and singles) from L.A. bands, so this edition of the Buzzsicle will make a dent in that. Buzzsicle 5 is an hour's worth of music — 16 songs that have caught my ear in the past few months. Hopefully, it'll provide you a little introduction to, or a refresher course on, the likes of t he Broken Remotes, Star Parts, the Tender Box, Avi Buffalo, Amateurs, Le Switch, Seasons, Courtenay Green, Evan Voytas, the Polyamorous Affair, the Airlines, Ronald of [...]

Dies ist mein 500. Posting! Tata, Fanfare, Tusch, Trommelwirbel, Tschingderassabum!

THE TENDER BOX - MISTER SISTER "Hey sister, I can see your soul runs free" I am not the first blogger to write about The Tender Box, and I probably won't be the last either. Mister Sister is an utterly sparkling slice of indie pop/rock, with an ebullient chorus that becomes an anthem even though it really doesn't have any words (other than lots of "oohs"). One of the most promising synth-rock bands in [...]

According to Ric Moon, guitarist of The Tender Box , most people take one look at his band from East LA and jump to the conclusion that the four are just a group of taco vendors. I guess that would be the ignorant point of view, and as Moon states, "we've never sold tacos". No, they aren't taco venders, but one of the catchiest bands to emerge from the California scene of Morrissey and Depeche Mode fandom. The four friends grew up idolizing 80s synth-pop and post-punk in the mold of Depeche Mode and The Cure, as all four [...]

A lot of good stuff comes to my attention via my email inbox. These are all decent and new bands you might want to check out. This post is good to preview these bands and I will most likely be writing a more detailed review for some of these releases. Enjoy! mp3 Nations Underground ( Sunny Day Sets Fire - Wilderness ) mp3 Edible ( Gran Bell Fisher - Full Moon Cigarette ) mp3 Call Me Your Darling ( Thea Gilmore - Harpo's Ghost ) [...]
