Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars You have to give it up to Toronto's Rock Plaza Central ; not only have they just finished their second proper album, but they managed to make it the most long-winded title: At the Moment of Our Most Needing or If Only They Could Turn Around, They Would Know They Were Not Alone. Yet again, it's a record that begs to be listened to from start to finish, and if you make it the entire way through the album, you're [...]

Earlier this week, the Chicago Tribune 's Greg Kot asked a few Chicago-area musicians about how they were fighting through the tough economy. Some formed cover bands (Led Zeppelin 2... ha!) and went out with stripped-down outfits on the road. Part of me is a little "yeah, duh" about musicians having second jobs, and in the story, Katie Tuten, co-owner of Chicago club the Hideout, notes: "People who play music are better able to handle whatever the economy throws at them because they're always on a tight budget." That is very true. We [...]

Day in, day out, it's easy to get caught up in how much work it is bringing up a baby. It's easy to start feeling like you've given up so much, like it's such a big chore and you're such a saint because you change a couple of diapers and miss out on a few hours of sleep. And then you read a story ( Globe & Mail ) that lets you know in no uncertain terms just how little you've sacrificed, how much you have and how good you have it. mp3: " These Tears [...]
Looks like a good weekend. But, to be perfectly honest, how much I end up enjoying it totally hinges on the success of Jonny Flynn and the my alma mater's basketball team in the NCAA Tournament.Let's ... So the other day a friend asked what I had been listening to lately that I could recommend. I rattled off a small handful of albums, including Matter and Light , the third LP from Forth Worth, Texas band The Theater Fire . Of course I had to offer a small blurb, something to sell the band. The best, most succinct, tightly wrapped description I could offer was that they played "countrified, eastern Europized, folk pop - yea, it's kinda quirky." Right. The album, released last month, is an independently grown affair whose fourteen tracks really [...]

With the U.S.A. mere days away from having a more progressive head of state than Canada for the first time since, um, Diefenbaker:Kennedy , are we going to start seeing Canadians start threatening to move south the way Americans threatened to move north in 2004? Probably not. Especially since the Canadian economy is still just swirling in the bowl and not right down the crapper . Besides, does anyone really think the Harper government will make it until the end of the year? Other than Harper, [...]

Driving home from work tonight, listening to Beirut's Gulag Orkestar (thanks Brent ) while the windshield washing fluid froze into long crystals on the window, I couldn't help but find a little peace behind the wheel, surrounded by cold, with only my pale headlights illuminating the path ahead against the embankments of snow that hugged the road. Should you find yourself in such a setting (or need to rely on some music to make you at least feel like you're there) and don't have a copy of Gulag Orkestar handy, why not take [...]

The Theater Fire , a roots-influenced, seven-piece indie-pop band from Texas, releases its third LP Matter and Light on December 9th, 2008. Matter and Light contains a wide range of instruments, combining horns, pedal steel, banjo, piano, fiddle, accordion, found percussion and singing saw with the standard bass, drum and guitar lineup. The result is a distinct fusion of country, jazz, zydeco, folk, blues, and rock. The two singer songwriters Don Feagin and Curtis Heath, along with the rest of the band, take us on a trip through the annals of music, drawing on [...]
