In Portland punks the Thermals' video for " The Sunset ," the second single from their new album Desperate Ground , badass bassist Kathy Foster gets a star turn. She plays a boxer training for a big fight with, as far as I can tell, the camera operator, and she also gives us her version of Rosie Perez's dance from the Do The Right Thing opening credits. The band co-directed the video with Jeffrey Rowles , and you can watch it below. Read More...

Titus Andronicus and The So So Glos: bringing back the dudes BY JORDAN MAINZER REWRITE BEGINNING. SEE EMAIL What's left to say about Titus Andronicus at this point? At least that's what I initially thought. I don't think it's an overstatement to say that the Glen Rock, New Jersey band’s show on May 4th with fellow Brooklyn DIY punks The So So Glos and Chicago-based but originally from Brooklyn band Sharpless (who sound like some sort of Thermals/Screaming Females hybrid and who [...]

Robert Semmer On the list of ideal days on which to announce a tour itinerary, there's not many occasions better than the day the album you're actually going to promote goes on sale. And so yesterday, with the official release of their latest full-length Monomania , Atlanta's Deerhunter have announced the itinerary for their Fall tour behind it. It's an outing that brings them to The Phoenix in Toronto on September 12, and that leg of the tour also includes support from Marnie Stern , who herself released [...]

Desperate Ground starts and finishes with vigour and dynamism and has lots to offer in between. It challenges the listener to ponder the struggles in life while managing to stay ridiculously entertaining. By Rob Thompson

Hutch Harris has stumbled upon a songwriting formula and has decided to damn well stick to it if Portland, Oregon trio The Thermals' sixth studio full-length Desperate Ground give any valid indication. '06 opus The Body, The Blood, The Machine perfected this heady, predetermined mix of fuzzy guitars, songs unrelentingly over and above 140 bpm, and hooks a go-go with a healthy measure of exuberant, usually shouty righteousness hurled in for added impact. And needless to say, Desperate Ground fails to stray far from this tried, tested, and so too trusted formula. [...]

The Thermals: Desperate Ground – Desperate Ground is cutthroat from the first second. With their new album, The Thermals capture rawness and vulnerability at its finest. Every song contains an element of distortion, as if they are not quite sure yet whether or not your heart can take it straight-on. The distortion in a warped way, actually filters out the bullshit, and leaves you with aching realness, and a connection that will stay with you forever. Around since 2002, The Thermals are no stranger to veracity. Westin Glass (drums, vocals), Kathy [...]
Frank Yang Objectively speaking, there's not a world of difference between Widowspeak's 2011 self-titled debut or the follow-up Almanac , released in January of this year. You can file them both quite comfortably under "the soundtrack to dreams of dusty country roads", not too far from lazy but not inaccurate reference points Mazzy Star and Cat Power, but something about Almanac grabs me the way that Widowspeak , as much as I dug it , didn't. And it's not something as simple as they're getting [...]
Throughout their 11-year career, The Thermals have thrived on endearing, wise, snotty, righteous anger. Their best albums directed that fury into a narrative both personally relatable and open for interpretation. At worst, the angst wound up marshalled in an over-general context, but even these tunes were enough fun to pogo right past the too familiar lyrics. On their sixth studio album, Desperate Ground , Hutch Harris digs into an album of laser-focused themes, dishing out track after track that blends aggression, heartbreak, and war. While masterpiece The Body, The Blood, The Machine achieved this same task in spades, Desperate [...]

Personal Life saw The Thermals walking away from their rage against the political machine, instead channeling that energy inwards towards love in the 21 st century. While the album ended up revisiting those political themes by way of the heart, it ultimately saw the band tempering their anger and hiding their lo-fi veneer underneath a shine that had them one step too close to the mainstream. The Portland band's latest record, Desperate Ground , sees them returning to that lo-fi sound that made [...]
Filed under: News , Exclusive , Movies , New Music , New Releases Thermals Facebook Before they began making their new album, Portland's the Thermals took a long look at themselves. Celebrating 10 years as a band, founding members Hutch Harris and Kathy Foster recognized a power in their earliest work that they wanted to revisit for the mighty exploration of violence and war that is sixth studio LP, Desperate Ground . [...]

Screaming Females in LA in 2012 ( more by Wei Shi ) As mentioned , Philly band Hop Along were recently added to The Thermals ' upcoming shows at Bowery Ballroom on May 28 , making for a great double bill. Making both shows even more desirable is the just-announced addition of Screaming Females to both shows too! Tickets are still available. Meanwhile, if you have any questions for [...]
In best ageing punk tradition, you could say that it's pretty much back to basics for the Thermals on their sixth album, Desperate Ground . Much of the sonic sophistication that possibly made 20102s Personal Life one of their less direct collections has been stripped down to the direct, rollicking 4/4 roll of guitar, bass drums that originally projected the Thermals into the lead-lined halls of the smart/loud guitar pantheon. That Desperate Ground was wrapped up and the band had buggered out of their Hoboken recording studio just hours before Hurricane [...]
