Photos and words by Melissa Moore If you were lucky enough to get to Austin this past week for SXSW, you know that The Thermals were getting all the attention. I remember watching the Portland trio a few FYF's ago, pogoing on stage to the catchy punk tunes. Thankfully, Desperate Ground the new album from the band's new label Saddle Creek, is more sneering fun. If you were at The Echoplex last night, I hope you survived lead singer and guitarist Hutch Harris' dive into the crowd - how he managed to still play [...]
Fresh off the plane from Austin and already plotting tonight's adventures: ► The Thermals , fresh off torching Austin in seven shows at SXSW, head up the Check Yo Ponytail 2 night at the Echoplex. The Portland trio, whose sixth album "Desperate Ground" comes out April 16, will be supported by Joyce Manor, Dunes and Death Hymn #9. ► Hey, it's the Specials , who did pretty well themselves at SXSW. The ska veterans headline Club Nokia, supported by Little Hurricane. ► Latin Grammy winners Bajofondo visit the Fonda Theatre behind [...]
Yesterday, Consequence of Sound hosted a day full of SXSW festivities, beginning with our second annual unofficial day party, CoSigns, featuring Thurston Moore's Chelsea Light Moving, The Thermals, Mac DeMarco, St. Lucia, Ex-Cops, Wampire, White Lung, Fort Lean, Teen, and AbdeCaf. In the evening, we teamed with Shea Stadium Records for an official showcase celebrating DIY music with performances by So So Glos, Diarrhea Planet, Kitty, Stagnant Pools, Roomrunner, and Duolouge. Check out various photos from both events in the galleries below. [...]
Consequence of Sound' s second annual CoSigns day party will take place during South by Southwest on Wednesday, March 13th at the Parish (214 E. 6th St). We've once again pieced together a diverse lineup packed with only the best acts. Thurston Moore's new band Chelsea Light Moving tops the bill, appearing alongside veteran indie punk band The Thermals , rising Canadian singer-songwriter Mac DeMarco , and our two recent CoSigns, Portland pysch rockers Wampire and Dutch mult-instrumentalist [...]
Frank Yang However you choose to bracket the timeline - the three weeks since Saturday night's show at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre was announced, the two months since her First Thursday performances at the Art Gallery Of Ontario were announced, or the 37 years since her first album Horses was released - I've been remiss in my Patti Smith education. To be clear: as long as I've been a remotely informed music fan, I've known who she was and her importance - you couldn't be an R.E.M. obsessive [...]

Frank Yang Understand that I am in no way, shape, or form complaining, but I was pretty surprised when it was announced that Bob Mould would be playing The Horseshoe this past Friday night. Not that one legendary artist doesn't deserve a legendary venue, but considering that his profile arguably higher than its been in years thanks to a 2012 that included the 20th anniversary Sugar reissues and tour, the publication of his memoirs , and his best-received new album in some time with Silver Age , to [...]
by Andrew Sacher The Thermals in Austin in 2011 ( more by Tim Griffin ) The Thermals are having a solid year so far with the vinyl reissues of their Sub Pop albums (out now), and signing to Saddle Creek for their new album, Desperate Ground , which from the sounds of its first single, "Born to Kill," is shaping up to be a good one. They've also got an [...]
Every Tuesday at 12pm (GMT) we aim to bring you a full-length concert to watch during your lunch break. Sort of like Orange Wednesdays, but not at all. Today we bring you The Thermals ' live show at Haldern Pop, Germany from 2009. The band are set to reissue their first three records through Sub Pop this year, which you can read about here .
Friday’s Noise Pop show at The Rickshaw did not disappoint. From the angular math rock of EV Kain to the Sunny, crystalline pop of The SHE'S, this lineup fell on many pleased ears. EV Kain opened the evening with complicated time signatures and hypnotic drumming while guitarist Brian Belier and drummer Jon Sortland’s vocal harmonies completed the sound - a heavy reggae-Police vibe, with maybe a touch of AnCo-style psychedelia. The festival tended to name-drop Hella when referring to this band (bassist Jonathan Hischke was a member) but these guys won’t [...]
The Thermals – “Born To Kill” Video (Stereogum Premiere)
Heroic Portland punk power trio the Thermals will release their new album Desperate Ground next month, and they've just given us the self-directed video for the anthemic first single " Born To Kill ." The video stars frontman Hutch Harris as a wild-eyed lunatic and the other two Thermals as mysterious government types who brutally suppress and interrogate him. The band clearly used a lot of fake blood in the making of this one. Below, watch the video and check out the band's tour dates; their show is absolutely one you should go see if it's [...]

Thurston Moore, Japandroids and So On: Every Band I've Seen at SXSW
Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News , Exclusive Dan Reilly There are thousands of artists in Austin for SXSW , and I'll be seeing a lot of them. This year, I decided to challenge myself and write about every band I see, no matter how much of their set I caught, or even if I saw/heard them unintentionally. Most of these "reviews" are pieced together from my illegible notebook scribblings, but that's all I've got. [...]

Noise Pop Show Review: The Thermals with Dirty Ghosts and The She’s at the Rickshaw Stop, 3/1/2013
It’s about halfway through Goddamn the Light that I realize something is off about the song. Up to this point, the Thermal’s set has been impeccable, but now there’s something clearly missing. The rhythm is all off, and as I scan the stage for an explanation, it dawns on me: The Thermals don’t have their [...] The post Noise Pop Show Review: The Thermals with Dirty Ghosts and The She's at the Rickshaw Stop, 3/1/2013 appeared first on Spinning Platters .
Thermals: March 9, 2013 Maxwell’s – Flac/MP3/Streaming
[still from this video ] The Thermals signed to Saddle Creek Records in January and in April will release Desperate Ground , their first album in three years. This year also marks the 10th anniversary of the release of their outstanding debut album More Parts per Million . On their current tour, the Thermals are featuring hefty doses of each of the bookmarked albums in the setlist. Last night at Maxwell's , the band delivered an extremely energetic show to a raucous crowd. From the very [...]

Album Review: The Thermals – The Body, the Blood, and the Machine [Reissue]
Almost seven years later, I still want to be The Thermals' Hutch Harris - and solely because of 20062s The Body, the Blood, and the Machine . I used to think it was a straight up guitar record, urging even the clumsiest to pick up a First Act six-string and hammer away until their knuckles bled. Then, I sat down one rainy afternoon to strum through the album's 36 minutes and realized it's just not as thrilling, even when trying to recreate the rollercoaster of distortion that ricochets around "Here's Your Future", "A Pillar of Salt", and "Power Doesn't [...]
Album Review: The Thermals – Fuckin A [Reissue]
The Thermals have always been an island. Born at the dawn of the webcomic renaissance, they floated between the universes of Questionable Content and Nothing Nice to Say , never quite finding a home in either. They cobbled together expats from emo and twee-folk to perform scratchy three-chord punk that soon blossomed into addictive, accessible political discourse. Just one year after their 2003 debut, Fuckin A pushed the Portland trio forward into a place where they could attack the political ennui of mid-aughts America in candy-coated two-minute bites. It came at the right time. [...]
Album Review: The Thermals – More Parts Per Million [Reissue]
Hutch Harris and Kathy Foster made names for themselves before becoming the core of The Thermals , gaining a cult following as folk duo Hutch and Kathy. Nothing, though, has reached the hearts of the pogoing masses quite the way that their decade-old band has. Considering their progression into a laser-focused, concept-driven, indie-pop hit machine, the first recording under The Thermals moniker reveals a style only a couple of key steps from its peak. Their 2003 debut, More Parts Per Million, shows so much of what makes the best Thermals songs great, though perhaps Harris was so [...]
