This edition in the Covered With Soul series might be one of the best so far. Here we have covers of songs better known by Free, The Rolling Stones, The Young Rascals, Frank Sinatra, The Beatles, Bob Dylan, Stephen Stills, Bobby Hebb, The Carpenters, Matt Monro, James Taylor, Simon & Garfunkel, Blood Sweat & Tears, The Bee Gees, The Box Tops, Joe Cocker (covering The Beatles), Gil Scott-Heron, Judy Garland, Frankie Valli, and Nat 'King' Cole. Some of these versions rework the songs so thoroughly, one might imagine they have always been soul songs. Just check out what [...]
Golden Grove: The Sound of Philadelphia lets us be part of a legendary performance by Philadelphia artists in their prime.

Golden Gate Groove: The Sound Of Philadelphia in 1973 is one concert I would have loved to have been at. Released today, the album, according to Philadelphia International Records "documents the first—and only— time that the stars of Philadelphia International Records ever played in concert with the label's fabled house band, MFSB. The concert took place in San Francisco during the annual CBS Records convention at the Fairmont Hotel in September 1973." In a review of the album on the music site The Second Disc , Joe Marchese writes: Recorded on July [...]

From the Dragon himself, here's a recap of his recent work, now available as fresh crispy 320s. ////////////////////////////// ////////////////////////////// //////// I, Peter Dragontail, am a consumute lover of the seasons. The effects of all are remarkable, but summer, especially this summer of 2010, is having a profound impact on me. Let me tell you why. You see, where I come from the summer is made of three elements: The SWEET, The HEAT & The HEART The SWEET is the cooling sunsets, winds at the beach, rapidly melting ice in coffee, [...]

The O'Jays, The Jacksons, The Three Degrees en The Village People. Samen met [...]

Here is the second part of musicians who died in 2009. Part 3 will follow early in the new year. I make no claims of having arrived at a complete and exhaustive list of musicians who left us the past year. Some I didn't include because their names or output is unfamiliar to me, or just not my scene; and a few I left out because I have no music by them, and could not find any. Finally, in response to an e-mail, the photo gallery follows the order in which people are [...]

Apologies for the tainted artwork, but for the sake of accuracy this was the only pic of the U.S. 12" I could find, and I don't have a camera. In any event, this is disco daggering at its most intense, Philly soul meets Moroder chug. Filed under: News , R.I.P. Fayette Pinkney, a soul singer best known as a member of the Three Degrees, died Saturday, June 27th, from acute respiratory failure. She was 61. Pinkney (pictured on the far, bottom left) joined Shirley Porter and Linda Turner in the Three Degrees in the early '60s, when she was still in high school in Philadelphia. Managed by Richard Barrett, who produced the Chantels and Little Anthony and the Imperials , the group underwent a series of lineup changes with Pinkney remaining the only consistent [...]
Fayette Pinkney , an original member and singer in the Three Degrees, has passed away. The Three Degrees formed in the 1960s when Pinkney was still in high school. The band was an essential part of The Philly Sound: tight, soulful, sweet, and pretty much the smoothest stuff you've ever heard. Seriously, the songs kind of just glide. Listen to "You're The One:" A great starting place for The Three Degrees is a compilation called The Roulette Years. You [...]

Mr. Oizo - Two takes it (E-phonk takes it more edit) [...]

image: Doc18 E-phonk shortbio Coming from Belgium, land of Jacques Brel, Soulwax and T99, E-phonk has been dj'ing and producing for 12 years. As a dj he played alongside international names as diverse as Joey Beltram, Dada Life, Pilooski, Bob Sinclar, Shinedoe, dego/4hero, Beesmunt Soundsystem, Stereo Heroes and Rainer Truby along with local heroes like T99, Sound of Stereo, Partyharders, Neon Judgement, Tom Barman, Buscemi, CJ Bolland and Lefto. Diversity is the key here, 'cause doing the same thing gets boring. You can [...]
- New Spoon song ! -For some reason I always think that this classic by the Three Degrees, When Will I See You Again, was sung by the Supremes. The gorgeous Three Degrees were definitely early predecessors in Hillary Clinton's "Sisterhood of the Travelling Pantsuits." The Three Degrees: When Will I See You Again . mp3
