Last week while I was listening to Kevin Cole on KEXP he played a song from Purrs ' new album followed by the Dream Syndicate 's Tell Me When It's Over which reminded me of a couple things. One, how much I love Kevin Cole's kid in a candy store approach to his daily show (you never know what he might grab off the shelf) and two: how much the Purrs seem to be influenced by the Paisley Underground. About a year ago when I saw them across the street from the Green [...]
This joint's been a real nostalgia rag lately, but much like today's subject, I'm only channeling. Today's reminiscence concerns (again) something I miss now that the Internet exists. I miss not having any idea who the opening band was until they started playing. Lately I've tried to recreate that lack of access to information as much as I can, and it's been mostly successful, but it's way too hard to avoid checking out a band's MySpace to see if I want to go to the show [...]
Running Time: 6:01 In 1988, Three O'Clock made their last album "Vermillion" under Prince's Paisley Park Records. While their previous albums brought minor success to the band, even with the inclusion of a Prince-penned upbeat song "Neon Telephone" (under the pseudonym "Joey Coco") , the Ian Richie-produced album failed to chart. It's been described as a kind of bubblegummy-pop, and was somewhat a deviation from the psychedelic rock sound that their fans were used to. However, the 7th [...]
I've been writing a novella loosely based on the life of Daniel Johnston, relocated from Texas to Montana and renamed Sam Barry (like Robert Johnson, if Daniel Johnston didn't exist, someone would have had to invent him). A lot of the main action takes place in 1983, so I've been fairly immersed in the music of that year recently. This includes, of course, two of Johnston's 1983 masterworks, Yip/Jump Music and Hi, How Are You , but also a good amount of synth-pop. Johnston had nothing to do with synth-pop, as far as I [...]
Lord knows how history will judge the "Paisley Underground" movement of the mid-to-late '80s, during which Los Angeles was overrun by charmingly anachronistic psych-pop outfits like the Dream Syndicate and Green On Red, and everybody seemed to be dating a Bangle. The Three O'Clock were one of the forerunners of this scene--they toured with R.E.M. and even got some late-night MTV play--and even though some of their later material sounds wayyy too synth-loaded today, these two singles still have as much punch as they did in the Reagan era: The Three O'Clock - [...]

Let's Get Wild
I was halfway through this post last night when freezing rain managed to somehow knock out my internet access! Sigh. The Wild Life - Music From The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack Cameron Crow followed up Fast Times At Ridgemont High with this flop of a movie that starred Chris Penn, Eric Stoltz, Lea Thompson and Rick Moranis. I've never seen the flick (it's been out of print for years) but I haven't heard many good things about it. Supposedly it's utter failure is one the reasons that Cameron Crowe assumed more creative control and [...]
