Tower Records was cultural icon. If you loved music and lived anywhere near one, Tower was your clubhouse. I remember visiting ToweR on my very first day in Boston to start college. But in 2004, the company filed for bankruptcy and by the end of 2006, founder Russ Solomon had shut nearly every one of its worldwide outlets. Many see the chain's demise as the first of many dominoes which mark the end of the music industry as we knew it. "All Things Must Pass: The Rise and Fall of Tower Records" hopes to chronicle [...]

I went to Tower Records last evening to see Bipolar Empire put on a free instore performance. They played an excellent half hour set, which sounded great and the small crowd loved it. I was really surprised though that Tower wasn't jammed with people. How often do you get an intimate audience with up and coming bands, gratis? Not too often. So I thought I should highlight Tower's instore performance listing so more of you might be encouraged to go along and support/discover [...]
Stephen Mogerley captured Lykke's in-store Tower Records performance in Dublin on Record Store Day for State Magazine .
Amongst many guests performing live in Tower Records to celebrate International Record Store Day on Saturday, it was the prospect of a set from Lykke Li that perhaps got us here at State the most excited. So much so, in fact, that we couldn't resist sending Stephen Mogerley and his crew to squeeze their way into the Wicklow Street store and capture it for us. That the results are so visually stunning is by now no surprise (we really do suggest that you watch it in full screen), but what is more astounding is [...]

Afterwards, The Workman's will host a free Record Store gig from 8pm with Ollie Cole, Cloud Castle Lake, Sacred Animals, We Cut Corners and The Durties. TOWER LIVE [...]

Usually we keep State Intervention's under wraps until the day of the show but for #9 we've decided to give a heads up a day early, so sure are we that you won't want to miss it. KT Tunstall is in town to play the Olympia Theatre in support of her Tiger Suit album but before all that she'll be playing live, for us, for free in the Tower Records cafe at 2.30 or thereabouts (we suggest you get there a bit early). At least one of our editors is dying for [...]

With their second album The Body of Christ and the Legs of Tina Turner garnering widespread critical acclaim in advance of its nationwide release, it is safe to say that there was a strong air of anticipation surrounding this special album launch. A limited number of wristbands were available in Tower Records from 9am on Thursday morning and were snapped up within the hour, leaving many fans disappointed – but certainly not the FLApes faithful who queued outside the store from as early as 3am. Lucky competition winners were granted early access [...]

One of the biggest victims of the digital music revolution has to be Tower Records . The once giant retail music chain with dozens of records stores throughout North America and parts of the world declared bankruptcy in 2004. The bankruptcy stemmed from the increasing popularity of digital music, the iPod, and iTunes. The last of the remaining Tower Record stores finally closed down in 2006 leaving many fans of the retail chain to wonder if there was a future for the Tower Records name. Now more [...]
Myles O' Reilly has on hand in Tower Records on Tuesday where Canadian twins Tegan and Sara played an in-store to many adoring (and screaming) fans before their Olympia Theatre gig that evening. Stay tuned to State for an interview with the twins next week. For now, enjoy this live video including a performance of 'Back In Your Head' which perfectly captures the excitement and buzz of the afternoon. Cameras by Myles O'Reilly and Stephen Mogerley. Directed by Myles O'Reilly. Check out more live videos from [...]
The vacated Tower Records store on East 4th Street has been a symbol of the decline and fall of music retailing in NYC since the day it closed, back in 2006. Since then the space has hosted flea m... Where else in Dublin but Tower Records would you see a bunch of lads lepping about like this to applause? Hey it's not all about MP3 files, Youtube videos and Spotify streams! Physical product is the best way to keep your record collection from getting deleted (though it can be susceptible to tea spills). We all know what bother Road Records and many other record stores are in these days. Many people aren't aware that Tower can be added to that list of independent Irish record shops. Yes, Tower is 100% independent [...]

It was fun while it lasted... having places to buy music in NYC, that is. With Circuit City gone, Best Buy cutting shelf-space and many independent stores gone the way of Tower, the final nail was pounded into the coffin of physical music retail in New York City this weekend as the Virgin Megastore in [...]

Last week, I had part one of the 26-song, seasonally-inspired, massive clusterfuck mix. Guess fucking what! This is part dos, just in time to send March off like a lion (or a lamb, depending on where you are I suppose). Spring rules, and I want you to have the jams I'm cranking in my car with the windows down and rims still spinnin'. Below are 15 more songs that are one million times better than the new Phoenix or St. Vincent or Lykke Li albums (or whatever the other blogs are poppin' boners for). Fuck that shit. String Band, [...]

There's no real need for an introduction. Spring is here finally, and it rules. West coasters may not be privy to this, but on the east coast, we have this thing called February which really sucks the life out of you. With these new mild conditions and sunshine, I had the energy to pull together a rather massive springtime collection of music - sunny folk and psychedelia (with annotations!) that evokes the oft conjured imagery of the season that I won't waste time reiterating here. This gangsta-ass mix is so massive, as a matter of fact, that it will be [...]
