30. The Traditionist - "I Know My Ocean"Joey Barro, the brain-child behind The Traditionist, turned out one of our favorite records of the year, the crushing Season to Season. "I Know My Ocean" remained one of the most approachable and re-listenable tracks on the record. Without over reading, it's a road-show, rambling bit of acoustic indie-rock. A harmonica shows up at one point, and a lazy

Lefse Badass Compilation [zip] Our buddies over at Lefse Records have generously offered up a Free digital compilation for your listening pleasure. They're calling it Fall/Winter 2009. As I'm reluctant to give over to cold gusts and gray skies, I'd rather think of it as a badass collection of songs that will continue to deliver sun-drenched summery goodness all the way through spring and beyond. Focused generally on digital brilliance plus some singer/songwriter fun, the collection includes one of my favorite Neon Indian tracks, Should Have Taken [...]
We shot some emails back and forth with Joey Barro from The Traditionist. We got his band name wrong the first two times we wrote about him. He makes sure to clarify. We silently apologize and think we should go to j-school. Most importantly, he's got one of the best records this year and you should be listening to him.32feet: Being that your band is basically you and a rotating cast of musicians
The Moondoggies ::: Secret Set at The Blue Moon ::: photo by Abbey We're half way through 2009, which means it's as good a time as any to reflect and share what I think are the best releases, songs, and shows of what's proving to be an exciting year of music. I'm not ready to list these [...]
I seem to be locked in a series of conversations where I can't fully express myself. Perhaps, it is our PR-driven culture. Sitting at the bar at Bowery the other night, a girl named Copper (you can't make this up) offered, somewhat seriously, to help recreate a friend's personal brand. She meant well and he, politely, didn't reject this proposal. But it was a revealing moment. We don't have
San Diego's Joey Barro is the Traditionist. Even as lead singer for the Antiques, he still had a pile of material to develop, so with a little help from Mother Hips member Tim Bluhm as producer he went to work. The results are cataloged on the album Season to Season, out this month on Banter [...]
The Lonely Forest CD Release Show ::: photo by Abbey I have to admit, not all my April albums are equal. For every time I listened to any other album, I probably listened to The Lonely Forest and Local Natives albums twice. I spent a lot of time with both albums in April, especially The Lonely Forest's We [...]

Like an indispensibly intuitive back scratcher or massage therapist, Joey Barro (The Antiques) know how to find the pressure point, the itch in his listeners, and work it. As my sister would say, The Traditionist can really hunker down and mash on it. He's subtle, though. The Traditionist makes a pathway in with crafty folk-soaked tunes occasionally dashed with shoegaze, memorable hooks, and a voice like Neil Young. There's no aping - Barro just can't help sounding like Shakey. Repetition is his thing. I've heard insanity defined as doing the same thing expecting different results. Barro's [...]

Time again for the purging of the perpetually packed Licorice Pizza mailbox. It seems like there are more and more two-piece bands these days. Maybe it's the economics of maintaining a four- or five-piece group; maybe it's just a trend, I dunno. The lack of a stage full of musicians isn't keeping the duos from putting out some decent music, as you'll find here with Dynasty Electric and The Boy Least Likely To. And what's cool is that these bands play totally different styles of music, so it's not like they're derivative or stuck within one genre. [...]

This 8-minute live track, repetitious yet far from tedious, is folk soaked to the bone with the ghost of Neil Young. Joey Barro (The Antiques) has become The Traditionist. He crows with fresh, reflective sadness, his voice strong and clear. I have to admit, Barro's clunky appelation, The Traditionist, originally appealed to me about like a heavy leather sofa, sparsely yet tastefully adorned with shiny gold brads and unmovable legs. As soon as I listened, though, my impression was altered. An easy fit, The Traditionist' songs are elegant, authentic in character and genuinely, functionally welcoming. [...]

[I'm in Austin for SXSW, trying to find either a St. Patrick's Day fest or Billy Corgan's birthday party, but perhaps you're in L.A. and want to rock ...] I'm not sure they could have paired two bands with more appropriate names: And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead plays the Echoplex tonight, supported by L.A.'s own (true Eastsiders) Funeral Party . ... [One in a series highlighting new music from SoCal artists ...] Eric Maroldo explains that his music moniker the One and the Other refers to the duality between love and fear. The former Viper Room DJ overcame a lot of latter when he recorded "Montreal MM:01103 with friends in that Canadian city. His electro-sprinkled indie pop isn't nearly as neurotic as that might sound — in fact, it's the catchy stuff of head-bobbing and foot-tapping. Maroldo has assembled an L.A. lineup to play behind [...]
