The Travelling Band's shimmering blend of cosmic-country-pop, understated psychedelia, vocal harmonies and nu-folk has made them one of the most talked about artists to emerge from the Manchester music scene – "If you consider the term Mancunian Americana to be an oxymoron try listening to The Travelling Band. Brilliant." -- Marc Riley BBC 6 Music. Read more »

Words: Saam Das I've listened to at least 100 tracks to compile this list of my top ten singles of October. I could have saved myself the bother and simply declared Lana Del Rey the winner for her widely acclaimed 'Video Games' single. Except we were emailed about her last May and didn't think she was particularly amazing. And still don't. Yet. So instead check out ten other artists who we think are more worthy of your time below. [...]

The Travelling Band, by Julia Stryj By Julia Stryj October 20, 2011 Julia Stryj was at the Electic Circus in Edinburgh last week to capture The Travelling Band 's headline show, supported by Jonnie Common and The Imagineers . Read Steve McGillivray's review of the gig here . [...]

The Travelling Band, by Julia Stryj By Steve McGillivray October 20, 2011 Tonight the rush hour traffic in Edinburgh isn't so bad. I manage to cross town from my work to the main train station in the city, Waverley, with a minimum of fuss. The night is not the most pleasant of the year, absolutely tipping down with freezing rain and generally being very Scottish i.e. damp and cold. I'm off to Electric Circus, which is so close to the train station, it feels like an extension. There [...]

The above photo is of the Palm House in Edinburgh's Botanic Gardens, and was taken and passed on to me by Dylan, of Blueback Hotrod legend. And given that the weather outside is all kinds of shit I thought there would be a sort of bitter irony in using it today. See - that's how nice Edinburgh can be, so what the fuck is this pissing rain all about? Anyhow, traditional British whingeing aside, it's going to be a pretty bloody mental week this week. Thursday is going to be a particular swine, what with the awesome David [...]
I'm starting to believe I may have the plague; 30 hrs straight in bed with no end in sight. At least I know who the douche was to give me this little gift of death, if someone sees that Shane Sweeting punch him in the face. Most people load themselves up on Nyquil and vitamin [...]
They hail from Manchester, but their sound travels you through America. Country, folk, pop and catchy melodies is what composes The Travelling Band's sound. Download the track "Battlescars", taken from their second album "Screaming Is Something". Watch their vintage video for the track:
Like plenty of acts before them, Manchester, England's the Travelling Band is looking to bridge the gap between folk and country while inject some pop sensibility. However small that gap may be at times, it's still not the easiest to close up with finesse. But it sounds like these guys are doing it, particularly on their latest single, "Battlescars," off their forthcoming sophomore album, Screaming Is Something . It's perfectly poppy, super melodic, and way too catchy to even think of scoffing at. Everything is so warm and rich, from the grand guitar strokes to the picking banjo, but [...]
The Travelling Band 's shimmering blend of cosmic-country-pop, understated psychedelia, vocal harmonies and nu-folk has made them one of the most talked about artists to emerge from the Manchester music scene. Their new album Screaming Is Something , is one of those frustrating EPs: it isn't quite soul, it isn't quite folk, pop, country or rock. It's more an inventive brand of guitar-laden mix of all five genres, with a sprinkle of cosmic aesthetic plus a dash of their trademark Mancunian musical lineage. But judge for yourself, for here we have a sneak peek with [...]

Here's a selection of photos from The Travelling Band 's show at Electric Circus, Edinburgh last month. All photos taken by Stef Siepel. Click here to see our interview with the band before the set.

Here's the second part to the gripping beginning of our interview with The Travelling Band . So, coming back to the album Screaming Is Something . How did you come across the artwork? Is there a personal connection to David Shillinglaw? Chris: Yes, he is a friend of ours from London. He's a great artist. And did he do the artwork specifically for you or did you pick one of his pictures? [...]

Adam Gorman of The Travelling Band (co-vocalist and guitarist) was standing outside, rolling a cigarette when I arrived at the Electric Circus at the agreed time for my first ever band interview. Great start, what could go wrong from here? The fact that Jo Dudderidge couldn't join us as somebody else was interviewing him didn't mean that it was a 1 on 1 interview as I initially thought, but quite the contrary. Bassist Chris Spencer walked into one of the interestingly decorated back rooms with us. After a short introduction and everybody getting themselves a drink out of [...]

Another week, another bank holiday in which we self-employed folks don't get to indulge. Working for yourself is great, but watching everyone else get days off when all you can do is stare at the steady trickle into your inbox and the pile of promotional copies of releases waiting to be posted, can be a little demoralising. And it's sunny, too. Fuckers. Anyhow, The Brainlove Festival was bloody good fun, only slightly ruined by an awful football match. My personal highlight was an absolutely awesome set by Mat Riviere. He was playing with a cellist whose name I [...]
A recording project in New York City in 2006 led a collective of like minded souls The Travelling Band to record what was to become Under The Pavement , their debut studio album. Released two years later, the record was very well received by the UK media, gaining BBC Radio 6 'Album of The Day', BBC Radio 2's 'Single of The Week' and a featured song in the Ian Dury biopic 'Sex Drugs & Rock n Roll'. Although, as The Sun says, "This debut blurs the folk/rock boundaries, delicately intertwining sensitive lyrics with accomplished folk vocals [...]
The Travelling Band I think folk is cosy. The Travelling Band is one of those bands that bring life to the good old folk style, with no special effects attached. They are Adam Gorman, Snaf Ballinger, Jo Dudderidge, Steve Mullen, Nick Vaal, Chris Spencer and Dicky Levs. And they come from sunny Manchester. They're signed to Sideways Saloon [...]

If this song wasn't enough I then find out that the Travelling Band are soon to be joined on stage by none other than Dodgy (yep, those self same underrated 90's rascals). But, back to matters in hand, here is a new band from rainy Manchester with a particularly sunny disposition and not a particularly British sound. 'Only Waiting' is stripped of studio fandango yet still packs plenty of punch through some lovely morning after vocals and perfectly pitched instrumentation. Why shout it from the rooftops when you're hovering majestically over earth in a zeppelin. And they also do a [...]
This week I will finish the live videos for Ten Tracks and eagleowl, to go with the Rob St. John ones here: In other news, the lineup for the Fence Collective's annual liver-bothering get together has been announced , and it's fucking superb: * KING CREOSOTE * MALCOLM MIDDLETON * EAGLEOWL * ROB ST JOHN * SLOW CLUB * BURNS UNIT * THE PICTISH TRAIL * THINGS IN HERDS * CANDYTHIEF * EMMA POLLOCK * JAMES YORKSTON * DAVID THOMAS BROUGHTON * MEURSAULT * DE ROSA * [...]

Ryan(StopMe): I was spoilt for choice this week but after much agonising, here are the ten best songs I could find: B. Fleischmann delivers a swoon-some nursery-rhyme ballad called 'Still See You Smile' . Sit back as the music-box sounds, dreamy Organs and brushed Drums caress your ears for three and a half minutes. I'm mainly choosing the Tru Menace Remix of Daniel Merriweather's Hip-Hop/Soul cut 'Chainsaw' because it's a got a rare guest Rap from Skinnyman . [...]

The UK is churning out some great new folk-rock bands. My current favorite is Manchester-based The Travelling Band. They were winners of the Glastonbury New Talent competition in 2008. Their debut album, "Under The Pavement", can be best described as country-folk pop. I can't totally place who they sound like, but Pete Greenwood, Devendra Banhart , Blue Mountain and Tom Petty come to mind. Download: MP3: The Travelling Band - Angel Of The Morning Download: The Travelling Band - [...]
