[ Kontra-Musik ] The Swedish duo Frak have an extensive discography dating back to the 1980s, releasing almost exclusively on their own Börft Records. In spite of this, their idiosyncratic brand of minimalist industrial has been little known outside of Sweden until very recently. In February, the American label Digitalis issued Muzika Electronic , their latest LP, to a fair bit of acclaim. Their sound joins the dots between a wide range of in-vogue genres, from minimal synth revivalism [...]
With the sun shining and holidays just around the corner, what a start to the Australian summer festival season with The Domain in Sydney's Royal Botanic Gardens playing host to The Homebake Festival, a veritable who's who of Australian and New Zealand acts. Now on its 16th anniversary, under the banner of "The Classic Edition", this year's line up included such iconic Australian acts such as The Church, Icehouse, The Triffids and internationally acclaimed headliner Nick Cave's Grinderman joining around 35 other artists covering a range of musical genres. All in all the offerings guaranteed the day would hold a [...]
Download five new covers by Okkervil River, featuring mysterious songwriters (one of whom simply vanished 35 years ago).
Australian indie band The Triffids were ruined by a big budget for their fourth album, conflicting ideals from the label and the band leading to a long, drawn-out, over-produced disaster. Well, that's an opinion, and one I read recently on F*c*b**k. I reckon Calenture is a damn sight better than that, but let's look a little further back at what the band produced whilst living off the smell of an oily rag in the middle of nowhere. Compare and contrast the making of In the Pines with its successor and it becomes a little [...]

Picture Books In Winter In my spare time I trawl Last.FM searching for the great unheard. A recent trawl uncovered Picture Books In Winter a great indie noise band from Cardiff with hints of fellow Cardiffians Mclusky and the Celtic rock of Idlewild. Check out the Reykjavic which sounds like fellow Mclusky covering Danse Macabre (the theme tune from Jonathan Creek) or 'Open Heart Surgery' which could be Idlewild and the Triffids covering 'The Devil [...]
The '80s are back in a big way, shoulder pads, crop tops and big quiffs galore, so it's probably the perfect time for The Triffids to bring out their greatest hits. Formed in the late '70s, the Australians were part of Rough Trade's anti-punk army. The opening, title track eases the listener into the blend of quintessentially '80s arrangements and broody male vocals. Almost every one of the 18 tracks utilises the typical soft-pounding-soft drum sequences and tuneful bass-lines that made for some of the best drive-time songs of decade. That said, The Triffids have more in common with the [...]

This CD contains "nineteen episodes from the adventures of the Triffids". It is hard to believe such intense music did not receive much comercial success outside of Scandinavia, Germany, UK, The Netherlands and the Triffids home country of Australia. If you are interested in guitar driven, moody, melodramatic rock with awesome vocals and a deep deep sound, get this CD. Or at least get it as the

Hidden Shoal Recordings are pleased to announce the release of ' seabirdtown ', the new single by Tangled Star, taken from their forthcoming That Time EP. 'seabirdtown' opens with the expansive open air sound of Pink Floyd-style organs and spatial guitars before falling into an earthbound shuffle and a taste of a lush, full-band sound for Tangled Star. The song's gradual build to a towering edifice of glowing overdriven guitar, droning organ and harmony vocals is topped off by an echoed guitar line that sketches glistening arcs in the stratosphere. The single is indicative of [...]
AT LAST. Kind of. Well, not really. Have fun in Prague, Richie. Everyone else: GET READY FOR A ROCK SOLID WEEK-LONG BLOCK OF LOCK STOCK AUSSIE ROCK. ...whoo. This power sure is intoxicatin' . I'm gonna start off this week of uninhibited editorial control of Rose Quartz with an ancient, poorly recorded track by a band who, depending on who you talk to, have either had far too many column inches devoted to them, or far too few: The Triffids. The Triffids - Of The Plaza [...]

Vanity Band Genre: Rock / Pop From: Los Angeles, California United States The profile of Vanity Band is much lower than such a name might suggest. They only have 137 myspace friends which makes them the myspace equivalent of the cat lady in the Simpsons and their profile has only been viewed 4,435 times. Google Vanity Band and very little comes up [...]

Back to the grind with another version of Friday nite grab bag, after a few days in chilly Amsterdam with old friends, animated conversation, good food and way too much to drink. Here are some great songs that assaulted my eardrums during the past week. Guaranteed: no ditties about bunnies or eggs. Instead you´ll get two great duets by the daughter of Ol´ Blue Eyes, a singer/songwriter turning anarcho punk into campfire singalongs and a new Triffids reissue. Happy easter, folks. While in Amsterdam, I got a great Nancy Sinatra album I had previously overlooked somehow from [...]
What is St. Patrick's day, but an excuse to tie one on? Being that we are repressed, puritanical Americans we need an excuse to drink, because if you just drink because it makes you feel good, well then you have a problem. Me, I don't save up my drinking for Erin Go Bragh, I prefer [...]
The Drones Genre: Psychedelic / Punk / 2-step From: Melbourne, Victoria, Australia Australian band the Drones (not to be confused with the obscure Manchester based punk band of the late 1970s of the same name click here for more ) have been delivering their devastating brand of [...]
