SEE & HEAR: The Waxing Captors - "The Trip"

SEE & HEAR: The Waxing Captors - "The Trip" Oh no, it's Monday. Well, if it feels as though you're living inside of "Office Space," then you could probably go for a serious pick-me-up -- you know, something to really get the week started off right. So here's a wonderful, buzzy tune called "The Trip" from Ipswich five-piece The Waxing Captors. It's the sound of power pop attempting to knock down the walls of rock's garage, and it's bound to wake you up with all this energy. First, we catch the guys literally taking a trip. But, much like the song, [...]

[Review/Listen] – Vacationer – "Gone"

I've been struggling for some time to write about Vacationer's debut album "Gone" and it's sort of a weird problem. The music is obviously all about escape-one need not look further than the group's name to see that-and it succeeds so well at capturing that feeling of freedom that trying to capture the album with words feels restrictive and counter-intuitive. But here we are. Vacationer are a Philadelphia group headed up by bassist/singer Kenny Vasoli and producer Matt Young. They've only been active as a group for [...]

More Cairo 2/17–19, 22–29

More Cairo 2/17–19, 22–29 Here are some more pictures of Cairo. Phil Dunn and I came back from Dahab to go on a felucca boat with couchsurfers, but it was rained out. We had some good times though, we went to the Citadel (and the military museum there) and the Egyptian Museum. You're not allowed to take pictures inside the latter place, which is annoying. There is a midcentury Indiana Jones feel about the Egyptian Museum in Cairo. [...]

Cairo 2/2–2/6

Cairo 2/2–2/6 Phil Dunn and I met up in the Cairo airport first thing in the morning on February 2nd. We were both totally jet-lagged, and Phil had just witnessed an epic fistfight right before I got there. We spent an hour or so in the Airport sorting out cellphone contracts and hotel reservations, it was all pretty surreal. After one night at an overpriced hotel, we found another one downtown . We discovered some amazing food, such as something I'd never heard of before called Koshary. We visited the Pyramids, of course. On [...]

Zanzibar 1/24–2/1

Zanzibar 1/24–2/1 I spent a week or so in Zanzibar, mainly in Stone Town. It's a beautiful and ancient, but a bit touristy now. Stone Town is characterized by it's tiny twisty streets that are too small for cars. Also lots of ornately carved doors. I stayed at Warere Town House which made up in friendliness for what it lacked in elegance. I went on a tour of a spice plantation, which was educational and got me out of the city for a day. If I had been more ambitious, I would have [...]

FREENESS: Wun Two – The Volt Soul Remixes (Germany)

FREENESS: Wun Two – The Volt Soul Remixes (Germany) Wun Two is someone who I've kept an eye on for way over a year now, even since I heard his A Jazz Remix tape . Infact I liked it so much I featured one of his remixes in the 'Are You Listening?' compilation I dropped a couple of days ago . Anyway Wun Two is at it again. Beat flips served up in a dope remix tape. He slows all the vocals down, it seems, and it's really interesting. Quite psycheadelic. But man this dude knows how [...]

Victoria Falls 1/20–1/23

Victoria Falls 1/20–1/23 I went to Zimbabwe in January to see Victoria Falls. They are beautiful, the land is beautiful, the economic situation there is heartbreaking. ATMs dispense US dollars, because the local currency is worthless . If you buy something with a US dollar, you can expect the $1s and $5s you get back to be extremely worn and faded, but never torn, which I suppose is the result of a lot of very careful handling. The $10s and $20s are, on the other hand, pristine.
