London pop rock outfit Veronica Falls drops its first single since the release of its 2011 album, Veronica Falls . It was one of my favorite LPs last year, and was so due to its infectious hooks, close vocal harmonies, and moody fall-appropriate atmosphere. A track from the forthcoming self-titled Hospitality record, "Betty Wang." This outfit is from New York, and that becomes clear upon closer inspection of the lyrics sung by frontwoman Amber Papini. She romanticizes the Big Apple as if it's never been done before, showing off a fresh and youthful attitude in the process. If you're into the light and innocent rock grooves of groups like Belle & Sebastian or Camera Obscura, this is a must. Look for Hospitality on Merge Records at the end of this month.

South Carolina's twee-folk rascals Those Lavender Whales release their debut album January 17th, but decided to let us all hear it a few days early. Tomahawk is filled to the brim with songs that just make me smile, and I'd highly suggest it to everyone. Stream the entire album over at Fork and Spoon's website , and expect a full review on Athid in the very near future.
When 2011 is said and done, there can only be one that surpasses all others. While there were 3 records that were rated perfectly this year and 2 that were as close to perfect as anyone could get, the process involved in picking the best of 2011 was as pleasurable as it was difficult.
