MP3: Twerps - Dreamin' I guess Twerps have been doing some "growing up" since last time we checked in with them; they were previously some of the best exponents of that whole '50s-influenced garage pop thing (w/ alternate dimension superhits like Dance Alone ), but on this new jam from their self-titled debut they've embraced a real widescreen, melancholic guitar pop vibe that comes complete with jangly guitars and strings. It's kind of an unexpected development for Twerps, whose best early songs were their scrappiest and most offbeat, but it suits them suprisingly [...]

Melbourne's jangle-pop sweethearts Twerps are preparing the release of their self-titled debut which drops October 18 on the superb Underwater Peoples label. "Dreamin" is the first taste of the upcoming record, which has this anthemic, yet broken-down sound that we've come to expect from a group who has some of the most on-point vocal qualities of anyone out there. UP has delivered some of our favorite records this year (see Speculator , La Big Vic , Julian Lynch , and Melted Toys to name a few) and they're about to bring us [...]
The Twerps – She Didn't Know 7" Australian wanderers The Twerps lay down a companion piece to their earlier single on Underwater Peoples. This time around the band run through an amiable round of scraggle and strum that comes close to The Strange Boys' yowl on the A-Side, while cooling things off with a bit of jangle-pop shuffle on the flip. The boys seem to still be finding their stride but the sounds are showing serious promise. Bubbling under those American influences is a heart that beats with AU/NZ pop principles and [...]

Not to be confused with another "Twerps" ("Northern Wisconsin's premier variety and show band"), who look more like "Twats", the Twerps that we're interested in are from Melbourne, the city with a fine DIY scene that has also produced the excellent Eddy Current Suppression Ring. The garage rock riffs and screaming organ on 'She Didn't Know' remind me a lot of Nuggets bands but, elsewhere on the EP, 'Anything New' has the same seductive Flying Nun jangle as the Bats and the Clean. Brooklyn's Group Tightener Records picked up on them from halfway round the world so we [...]
Despite the long walk to Glasslands in the snow this show was nothing less than phenomenal. New friends, old friends, and amazing music. It will be far too long before the Twerps grace Brooklyn with their presence again (unless they come back before leaving the country). Live at Glasslands . April 23, 2010. ------------- more on La Big Vic here . more on Family Trees here . more on Family Portrait here . [...]
The S-25 Mix is short for The Sunday 25 Songs Mix, where we put together a mix of 25 tracks (sometimes more) we love from all genres and time periods of music. Over the past two weeks, we put out the Songs About Cars mixes, many of which were recommended by our readers. But this [...] Read more, get songs or stream the entire mix on Indie Rock Cafe

The Twerps are from Australia, and they have been getting a good deal of buzzzzz on the better blogs for the past month or two, and now they're on an American tour. In terms of current bands, they're like one part Strange Boys and one part Girls and one part 70s NYC punk band. It's all jangly with whiny vocals, but the songs have a laconic casualness to the them. They're the chillest punk songs I've heard in awhile. I like 'em a lot, and I think you will, too. And Big Troubles are always fun to catch, plus each [...]

Tonight will be a very important night in world relations. On this night Australian Band, The Twerps share the stage with New Jersey born and bred American badasses, Family Portrait . This historical event will take place at Glassland's Gallery. Things may get a little crazy but with these bands coming together we are hoping to make peace between these two waring nations. Fingers crossed for a cease fire. But seriously, it's going to be a great show so if you're in the NYC or Brooklyn area [...]

Melbourne, Australia's The Twerps released a cassette on Night-people (in the US) in late 2009/early 2010, and some of those people that are always a head of the curve posted a couple tracks off the slightly sad mellow pop masterpiece. At the same time Chapter Music in Australia released the 30 minute album on a 73//CD combo pack. It's a shame that this release didn't get more acclaim in the US because when ever I pop it into my cassette deck I just let the auto-reverse takeover...and it [...]

All I have to say is this - I hope this week is a bit more streamlined than the massive traffic jam that last week was. Let's hope for some good ole peaceful days and nights, shall we?... [go to the website to read the rest of the article, download mp3s and more]

MP3: The Twerps - Black Eyes Another killer one from Melbourne's The Twerps , one of an increasing number of incessant Australian bands repping a wild take on proto-pop or proto-punk. Its the kind of skewed classic jangle that fits just as well into the myth-drenched Night People catalogue on tape as it will on the new 7" that Underwater Peoples are set to release. Furry, casually calamitous, and tinged with this totally antipodean drunk-in-the-early-evening bittersweetness. They're launching brand new 7"s on Olde English Spelling Bee and [...]

Some good friends of ours from Down Under have been steadily putting out great music, and we've tried to do our best to spread the good word here in the States. One of these bands, which we've mentioned before, is the Twerps . They've got a nice little bit of melancholy to go with some oceanic jangle, which is just the right kind of stuff for my ears. Their newest split single with the Ancients, Black Eyes , will come out on March 8th, [...]

HAPPY MONDAYS ok. So, we kinda slept it on this thing at first. Melbourne hipster hangout Rooftop Bar are putting on some pretty sweet gigs right across summer. My Friend Wallis Vancouver, Canada Crystal Dorval I started My Friend Wallis as a recording side project to another band I used to play in called Vincat. Things fizzled out with that so I ended up adopting My Friend Wallis as my main brain child. I released my first EP "When The Blue Turned Yellow" in June 2009 and the release party was my first show and basically the start of the band. The [...]

The Twerps put out a 73 late last year on the wonderful chapter music. I was quite hooked on that release and glad to catch their support slot for Super Wild Horse at the Empress. Lo fi pop is pretty hip right now, whilst I can get bored with some of the current crop, the Twerps have something more going on. I can't tell you what that is exactly but it's not just their youth. These guys aren't moaning and have a wholesome sound, not 'couldn't be bothered' lo fi. This comes across in the live show, which I really enjoyed. [...]
