Yes, you read that title correctly, this post features The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain. There is really nothing like a ton of ukuleles playing a happy song to brighten up a day, seriously, nothing compares. Especially when those ukes are playing a sweet oldie, originally performed by The Only Ones, called "Another Girl, Another Planet." I think I first heard this song (The Only Ones
You know how sometimes with a song you enjoy you want to justify it with artful, critical prose. You want to show that not only do you like that song, but somehow you like that song because you are a better person. It's your basic conflation of morality and aesthetics, and plenty of people seem to fall prey to it. I'm sure I have. Then there are the other times, the times when you like something and really don't care what other people might think of you for it. That's what Doklands describes as the [...]
Before the Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain became known for being a joke band, they would occasionally record music like this. Here, Home on the Range becomes a thing of pathos and sweet melancholy. Maybe the deer and the antelope are playing not on some patch of scrub, but on the fortunate isle, the western land of eternal summer. I'd like that. The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain - Home on the Range (alternate download)
We went to see the Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain last week, and what a top night out it was. Brilliantly idiosyncratic covers of great songs and some genuinely hilarious onstage banter (e.g. after they'd re-entered the stage from the wings after exiting in advance of the first encore: "You can't get out that way".) I love the way they drop the 'U' word into the songs from time to time too - with (genuinely) hilarious consequences. Anyway, you'll doubtless know all about this seven and sometimes eight-piece combo (unless you've been terribly remiss or remote from the [...]
It's the little moments that make this hilarious.
This the The Ukulele Orchestra Of Great Britain in concert at the Glatt & Verkehrt Festival, Winzer Krems, Krems, Austria on the 26th July 2009. The superb musicianship along with thier unique take on so many famous songs across different genres along with the humour, make this a definate must have for all fans, and a great reminder for anyone who has seen them at festivals or on tour. If The UOOGB are new to you then in my opinion this is one download worth the time checking out. [...]

Life On Mars? was originally released on David Bowie's 1971 album Hunky Dory . Life On Mars? would be released as a single in the U.S. two years later with The Man Who Sold The World as its B-Side. Talk about a killer combo. The Contestants: The Bad Plus : In addition to this adventurous take on a Bowie classic, this Bad Plus album from 2007 also features interpretations of Everybody Wants To Rule The World (Tears For Fears) and Tom Sawyer (Rush). [...]
Last night at the BBC Proms, the Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain had planned something special. They were trying to assemble the largest ever massed ukulele ensemble to play Ode to Joy . It's possible that they managed it. Reports said that there were 1,000 uke players there, all joining in. I heard it, and was sadly underwhelmed. Whatever the experience may have been like in person, it didn't translate well to radio. So I'm not blogging that. What you get instead is the piece that followed it. For [...]

You know how it is with the ukulele: once is never enough. You listen to one ukulele track, and it demands that you listen to more. I don't believe, you think, that I have begun the explore the depths of this instrument. Maybe another track or two will get the ukulele longing out of my system. I feel your pain. I too know the demands that the ukulele makes on the listener. For now, I advise easing your cravings with a dose of the hard stuff. Often credited [...]
