Okay, so the requisite best 08 release list is behind us, as well as a rundown of some of my favorite discoveries of the year, plus my post on my most beloved record , personally, this year. Still, none are totally accurate. Lost in the cracks are the more recent albums that don't really fit into either category. In this year's case, that means adding three albums from 2007 that I didn't get to until 2008. Here's my list of my personal favorite albums of the year. (Again, the logic of the ranking gets a little fluid [...]

In 2007 my blind spot interests were fairly monogamous: my love of the Byrds morphed into a fascination with the Laurel Canyon scene, opening basically into a lot of 60s and 70s folk and rock. (Also, Elvis Costello.) That interest continued in 2008, though moving into a more country-rock direction???the Lovin' Spoonful's Anthology , for instance, was on of my favorite records of the year. I didn't listen to it a lot on its own, but nearly every track made its way into one iTunes playlist or another. I need to start picking up their proper full lengths. [...]

We're still here... supposedly. I don't mean that in an existential way, simply that the first CERN experiment went well and Earth was not black-hole-swallowed. There will be more though, so let's hope everyone at CERN brings their A-game, because I'm totally not in the mood to die. The Decibel Tolls hasn't even been invited to SXSW yet! That has to happen first. However, assuming the Large Hadron Collider functions smoothly, there's still a grab-bag of apocalyptic scenarios out there to garner a breathy "fuuuuuuck" to slip from your lips. [...]

SomaCow Media is proud to present SomaCow . Brought to you this week by Say... Anything . The best all chick show on the network! So Mickey is looking to move. In this market, should he take the plunge and buy? Or keep on renting? I mean renting at least you wouldn't have to climb on the roof, crawl around the attic, replace the wet carpet, pay to have the a/c recharged, mow the lawn, clean the pool, shock the pool, chlorinate the pool...shit. [...]
ah it's been a quiet old week musically. the post-waits comedown (as it shall now be known) and the inevitable disappointment of new beck seemingly dampening my spirits. what's been holding my interest is (unfortunately) bison grass vodka, harvey birdman cartoons and old ecw wrestling tapes. all i have to say is that the only new [...]

SomaCow Media is proud to present SomaCow , brought to you by Semoran Skateway . Well, Geoff is off at sensitivity training learning not to call black people 'monkeys', or Asians 'Alien slanteyes'. Hopefully. And while he's off learning to not call people " durka durkas" vs "woo woos", I'm here at home watching Anthony Bourdain . See, I know that when Geoff comes home he will want to watch him again so that means double [...]

SomaCow Media is proud to present SomaCow , brought to you in this hour by Kung Fu Panda . Kick, Punch... It's all in the mind. Listen to me, folks, and listen good. We talked about a range of subjects in this hour, including Mickey's birthday, turkey legs and sundry street food, and the need for Mike Myers and Adam West to do something useful with their autumnal years, but none of that matters. What matters is [...]
I awoke to the sound of my alarm clock as it struck 9:00am. Last night was another night of deep, dreamless sleep, only without the benefit of awakening refreshed and ready to greet the day. Although I longed to roll over and return to wherever the fuck my consciousness escapes to when I sleep, my desire to keep all the plans I've made this week got the best of me, and I instead rolled out of bed and threw on some clothes. My mother yelled to me from downstairs to declare she had made breakfast for me, and asked if [...]

The United States of America album is the product of Joseph Byrd , former FLUXUS member, artist and UCLA instructor who managed to combine experimental art and early synthesizer technology with psychedelic rock in creating this brilliant record. Employing percussion instruments, electric violin and acoustic strings, electric bass, various keyboards, homemade oscillators and ring modulators, and Dorothy Moskowitz's confident soprano, this record shows surprising pop capability for an avant garde project. This is truly a pioneering record and worth your attention. Everybody wouldn't be expected to sit through campy synth exercises like I Wouldn't Leave [...]
The Dukes of Stratosphear - 25 O'Clock (Chips from the Chocolate Fireball / Virgin / 1987) The United States of America - Cloud Song (The United States of America / Edsel / 1968) Electric Light Orchestra - Can't Get It Out Of My Head (Eldorado / Jet / 1974) [...]

Corsten is touring to promote the release, with the following [...]

The 60's and 70's saw the transition of the female's role in music from the passive voices present in early female folk and girl groups to her rightful place as a powerful driving voice on par with any male counterpart. This transition ushered in a whole host of female led rock outfits, some of which were sorely overshadowed. I give you two such fine examples. Affinity - If You Live Affinity were a short lived group who signed to Vertigo Records for one [...]
