Words by Brendan Artist: Donora Album: Boyfriends, Girlfriends Released: September 27, 2011 Label: Rostrum Records I've been thinking a lot about this album over the last couple of weeks, listening to it straight through or putting certain songs on repeat, dissecting lyrics and moods, yadda yadda yadda. The problem is this: I've forgotten to have fun . Not always, mind you. I did throw a mini dance party in my apartment the other day when "Mancini's Dance Hall" came [...]

Originally released as part of Morphy's "Dubtopia EP" , the smokey sounds of "Warren Dub" have been constantly on the playlist at the Labs since its release two years ago. Belgian duo The Untouchables have now been drafted in to give the track a wee update for 2011. With forthcoming releases for labels such as Renegade Hardware , Translation , Alphacut and more, this gives listeners a taste of what to expect from their future output. Keeping the atmosphere of the original intact, it's more of a re-edit [...]

Seattle's Che Blaq has brought a new innovative sound to the genre of R&B by combining the sounds of electro-pop, hip-hop, and vintage soul. What makes Che stand out amongst other upcoming R&B artists is his smooth, yet soulful and powerful voice, catchy and fresh melodies and edgy production. Che's debut album "Fearless" will be arriving in stores soon and promises to be filled with songs written, produced and arranged primarily by himself. Aside from his solo endeavors, Che is one half of R&B duo, The ARq , along with Jay Dot, who [...]

Around '97, I had the chance to meet Scarface and even stand on stage while he performed. As far as personal highs go, being in Brad Jordan's presence was just as electrifying as being within earshot of Mike Jordan since they both indirectly had a hand in shaping me as a teenager. And while 'Face was a most cordial gentleman, he sounds completely unapproachable on the mic. "You owe me and I want it all and that's that, And bitch you got to pay with yo life and not scratch." [...]
Awhile back the folks at Soul Generation started up a side blog dedicated to a rambling genre hybrid that can only be described as "titty shakers," entitled (of course) tittyshakers.com. From their manifesto: "The roots of tittyshaker can be traced back to '50s America where in major cities ,through to backwater shacks and pit-stop bars, [...]

With only the second entry in this iPod Shuffle thing (did you see the first ?), I don't want to spoil you. I have no intentions of writing a piece to accompany every song that we post with this. Actually, the not writing aspect was the whole draw for me. Give you a dope song & K.I.M. With this Brad Jordan joint, it's different. I was recently involved in a piece (coming soon) about what I liked most about Common & one quality was his growth over the course of his albums. [...]

Julian Plenti- Fun That We Have (Link 2) Paul Banks is a most introverted frontman. Brooding, melancholy and with his distinctive baritone voice, he cut a lonely figure, even amongst the other members of Interpol. He is, however, willing to put out and take risks. Banks (along with the rest of us) has clearly become disillusioned with Interpol's sound, seemingly stuck in a time warp. As an escape, he created 'Julian Plenti', an alias. There were no attempts to hide his identity, so I'm saying this is just a process he wants [...]

Zuper Blahq- Here We Go (Link 2) (Link 3) Amidst 'Boom Boom Pows' deserved domination of the charts, one member of Black Eyed Peas has been crafting a sneaky side project. Whilst he denies it, everyone and their pet dog knows that Zuper Blahq is, in fact, Will.i.am. He must be playing the long game- both he and Fergie have focused on their solo careers for a few years now; is a break-up the next surpise Black Eyed Peas are going to deliver? It's just too convenient- Black Eyed Peas [...]

Never has the selling point of a band been so easily summed up for a lazy hack looking for a quick post: British Fleet Foxes. I am assuming that this latest single from the boys with the hearts of gold comes with a free stick-on beard to stroke whilst listening, such is the ear-hugging folk loveliness of the harmonizing here. This will be ruined by drunk people at many a campfire sing-along for years to come: "So Long..." is an ideal soundtrack to the sun going down at festivals the world over, and I'm sure that [...]
Earlier today a friend of mine asked me if I wanted to come and see these Aussie stormtroopers live, and this propulsive electro-rock monster was the deal-breaker. TTT whip up a storm of noise with a somersaulting vocal take vying for supremacy over the top of it: "The Science of Fear" already sounds like it will burn up the dancefloor at either your average indie joint or clubs frequented only by people in arseless PVC chaps; the two remixes of this that I've heard suggest that it's one Erol Alkan set away from becoming a dancefloor staple. [...]

At first listen of Girls Aloud Out Of Control album, the track doesn't get ones attention. It just sits there between stronger tracks that sound more like video-worthy singles. Then as the pop grace of the other tracks wears off, this one rises. I can honestly say that "Untouchable" is not one on the best singles of the year but also a song that will go down in Girls Aloud's history as the one that finally got them great critical acclaim outside of the pop-sphere. With its lush electronica sounds [...]

This is only one of the best singles of the year. The girls are turning everything they touch to gold. This is, as I am saying these days, premium!

Hands down, this is one of the best performances I had seen in a while. I caught a glimpse of it on TV and thought it was just spectacular. Girls Aloud are truly the best band alive right now. The single is just perfect and it should be a big hit for them. It wasn't that catchy in the beginning, but it is one of the best tracks on Out Of Control .

Phoenix- 1901 (Link 2) Phoenix- 1901 (Immuzikation Remix) (Link 2) Phoenix- 1901 (Mr. Vega Remix) (Link 2) For a new find (in the UK at least), Phoenix are doing a pretty good job of being featured everywhere. I stumbled across them a few weeks ago, prepared my post and then realised I had been roundly beaten to the finish line by just about every other music blog in existence. Phoenix had already arrived, welcomed into the net league [...]
Attention Crooked I fans, your wish may finally come true. Ever since the Dodger-blue-wearing emcee bolted from Tha Row, eager gangsta rap addicts have impatiently for the leaks of the two unreleased LP's he did while signed to the label: Untouchable and Say Hi To Tha Bad Guy . The albums were supposedly recorded before his contract expired in 2003, and the way people still talk about these things, it's like the Mayans laced the hooks or some shit. Now, though, since the world's most dangerous label is [...]

Delphic- Counterpoint (waiting for approval to post)- enjoy the video (below) for now. Delphic- This Momentary Monitor (Remix) (Link 2) And on the Sixth Day, God created Manchester. Manchester has rested on its laurels for a long time: it's consistently proven the breeding-ground for the greatest bands that England has ever produced - count them: Joy Division, The Buzzcocks, Magazine, New Order, The Smiths, The Stone Roses, Oasis. Since 1996, this city has turned out no-one that has dared to really reach for the stars through the northern [...]
